Linton and Woodruff prove to be tough cookies

Stanley LintonThe Run For The Cookies 5K has been around long enough to have lost track of its age. The entry forms, flyers, and posters proclaimed that this was the 21st annual race, but there have only been 20 Cookie Runs, including the first in 1994. Gary Droze won that inaugural event, outpacing modest field of 85 runners in a 3.1-mile run from Tallahassee Mall. Since then the race has moved to Tallahassee Community College, swelled to over 600 runners, and inspired a series of races. In addition to Tallahassee's Run For The Cookies, the Girls Scouts of the Florida Panhandle also raise funds at 5K races in Pensacola and Panama City. One thing hasn't changed over the years: each person who enters the race gets a box of girl scout cookies. The success of the Run For The Cookies shows that When it comes to girl scout cookies, not everyone is content to wait for a girl scout to ring their doorbell. More than a few folks are willing to run a few miles for the goods.

Chris RegoWhether for cookies or competition, more than 600 athletes showed up at the starting line behind Tallahassee Community College on Saturday morning, 9 February 2013, for the 20th annual Run For The Cookies. Once the race started, Chris Rego quickly got a few steps ahead of the horde. Rego led through the mile mark, where his closest follower were Florida State freshman Stanley Linton, Lincoln High distance runner Trevor Touchton, and Bainbridge High athlete Chase Harris. Early in the second mile, Linton surged past Rego and into the lead. Linton pulled steadily away after that, and reached the finish line in 16:00 with the win. Rego was runner-up in 16:18. Touchton took third in 16:53, with Harris fourth in 17:00. Tallahassee's Jay Wallace was the fastest master in the Run For The Cookies, taking fifth overall in 17:36.

Chelsi Woodruff
Early in the race, Chiles alumna Carly Thomas and her fellow Florida State student Chelsi Woodruff got away from the rest of the women's field, but couldn't seem to get away from each other. At the mile mark and again at the two-mile mark, Thomas and Woodruff were running virtually side by side. Late in the third mile, though, Woodruff got a few steps ahead of Thomas then built that into a winning lead. Woodruff took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 17:42. Thomas was 11th overall in 17:54, taking the second women's spot. Another half a minute back, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen was the third woman finisher, 15th overall in 18:25. Rosen was the Run For The Cookies 5K women's champion in the 2011 race.
