Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course Map Released

With the Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational less than two weeks away, FSU has released the "final" map of the course at Apalachee Regional Park.
The map was drawn by Florida State University coach Karen Harvey. There is no compass rose, but the top of the map is east, so Lake Lafayette is to the left (north) and US 27 / Apalachee Parkway is to the right (south).

The FSU Cross-Country Invitational will be the inaugural event on the course; it is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, 10 October 2009 and will include collegiate, high school, and open races.
  • 7:50am College Men’s 8k
  • 8:30am College Women’s 5k
  • 9:00am High School Varsity Boys 5k
  • 9:30am High School Varsity Girls 5k
  • 10:10am Open Male 5k (open to all ages)
  • 10:40am Open Female 5k (open to all ages)
  • 11:00am College and High School Team Awards
Visitors to the course should stay the heck away from the radio-controlled airfield. They don't strafe the course, runners shouldn't intefere with their planes. If anything, we have a common enemy out at the Apalachee Regional Park--the feral pigs that wander out of the woods and dig everything up.

Before the Invitational there will be one last workday on the course on the morning of Sunday, 4 October 2009. The Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course was developed through a partnership of the Leon County Division of Parks and Recreation, the Gulf Winds Track Club, and Florida State University. The course is located in Apalachee Regional Park, 7550 Apalachee Parkway, or on US 27 about 4-and-a-half miles east of the intersection of US 319 (Capital Circle) and US 27 (Apalachee Parkway).

  1. Herb,
Coach Bob asked if I'd lead on the bike for the races. I went to the course Tuesday and Wednesday.
Wednesday's ride with Bob's help and Coach Harvey's map cleared up a couple errors I made on Tuesday.
    Small gallery here.
Thanks much for your continuing coverage of ARP.
I love that lowside stuff with the rollers and the causeway.
If I decide to go with the 50lb Pugsley, I'm going to have to get a headstart up the "wall" back into the west field.
If Criscione races it, I might need to pedal faster than the 23:41 I rolled today.
May I borrow a Red Bull or six?

  2. John,

If you think it'd help, we could have someone stationed at the base of the Wall with a cattle prod for an extra boost. ;-)

I checked out the Corbin Trail (i.e., the "coach's trail" that connects the one-mile and two-mile marks) today, and it's full of dips and rolls that a trail-biker would love. I'm not sure how much they'd love riding on mulch, though.

Thanks as always for your kind words about the blog. It has been a trip the last three or four months watching woods, swamps, and ol cow pastures become a championship cross-country course. See you at the Invitational, if not sooner!

    Herb.

  3. The "Coach's Trail" down to Mile 1 (did you notice the hog trap down there?!) may need an EMT stationed back at the top.
I could paint a picture with words, but I'll yield to The Master on this one, Herb.
The ball is in your court. Your serve.

  4. John,

There are actually two hog traps out there, the second is farther east than the one you saw.

Are you saying that pudgy, middle-aged men in sansabelt shorts are going to need an escalator to get up the Corbin Trail?

    Herb.

  5. I don't know, Herb. Let me go back and review my notes.
Re "sans a belt" I would like to invoke the words of a famous Frenchman. The Colbert Doctrine advises, “Facts should be like Sansabelt pants; adjustable to fit your needs.”
Coach Braman related there may be a country boy living high on the hog from the several they have successfully trapped thus far. Trust me, "trap and release" is not in their lexicon.
I'm going to network with the guys working ARP for the County. Goal #1 is to be wearing Sansabelt cycling gear at Go Time.
That's mustard based bbq sauce you'll be smelling when the EMTs slap the paddles on me.
