Dewayne Riley rolls to his third straight Billy Bowlegs 5K title

William Augustus BowlesBack in 1975, when the inaugural Billy Bowlegs Midnight Run was contested on the streets of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, the run was three miles long, it was a midnight race that actually started at midnight, and there was a rotating trophy. The names of the winners were engraved on the trophy, and anyone who won the annual event three years in a row got to keep it permanently.


Over the years the Billy Bowlegs was bumped up to a stylishly metric five kilometers and the starting time was moved to earlier in the evening. I'm not sure what happened with the rotating trophy, but it was many years before anyone managed to win the race three times. Winning the race even once was impressive enough. It took nine years before Mike Zeressen became the first to win the Bowlegs twice in a row, in 1982 and 1983.


So it was no small accomplishment when on Saturday evening, 3 June 2017, Dewayne Riley of Milton, Florida won the 43rd annual Billy Bowlegs 5K, his third title in three years at the Fort Walton Beach classic. The race finished on the Fort Walton Beach High School track, and Riley's winning time was 16:47, which put him half a lap of the 400-meter track ahead of the runner-up. Of Riley's three Bowlegs wins, it was his largest margin of victory.


Sheldon Harris took second in 17:30, just ahead of the 17:37 posted by third-place runner Owen Bradley of Birmningham, Alabama. Jonathan Campbell was the fastest master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 18:52.


Brigid Gutierrez of Niceville, Florida took the women's title, coming in 21st overall in 21:07. Donna Harris was the first woman master and second female finisher, 47th overall in 23:19. Eleven-year-old Joey Shonk edged fourteen-year-old Jensen Shonk for third in the women's standings, both girls clocked in 23:21. The Shonks each ran on the Liza Jackson Prep School cross-country team during the 2016 season.


290 athletes finished the 2017 Billy Bowlegs 5K. Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida timed and scored the run.

Riley and Trittschuh raced fastest at the Riverwalk Run

Riverwalk Run 5K T-Shirt designMilton, Florida, is a small town, dwarfed by nearby Pensacola. Nor does Milton have the surf and white sands of Pensacola Beach. The town isn't without it's attractions, though. There's the Blackwater River, the Blackwater Heritage State Trail, and the "Red Brick Road"--a brick-paved remnant of the old Florida State Road 1 open to foot and bicycle traffic now that the Model Ts have moved on. There's also the Riverwalk, the focus of Milton's annual Riverwalk Run 5K.


Milton held its seventh annual Riverwalk Run 5K on Saturday afternoon, 3 October 2015, starting near the Riverwalk at the intersection of Willing and Berryhill. At 5:00 PM the race started and the athletes headed north on Broad Street. After a 3.1-mile tour of Milton that included portions of the Blackwater Trail and the Riverwalk, Dewayne Riley of Milton was the first to finish, winning the race in 17:01. Lafayette, Louisiana, athlete Dan Vollmer was runner-up and top master, running 18:07. Milton's Derek Blackmon finished third in 18:13. Milton athletes Karen Trittschuh and Susan Smith were in a tight race for the women's title, but Trittschuh won that duel 20:53 to 20:56. Trittschuh was tenth overall while Smith, the top woman master in the race, was eleventh. Milton master runner Michele Williams was third in the women's standings, placing 17th overall in 21:40.


120 runners plus an assortment of walkers finished the seventh annual Riverwalk Run. Timing and finish line services for the race were provided by Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Riley and Bishop win the race inspired by the Dread Pirate Bowles

William Augustus BowlesFlorida loves its pirates.


In 1954, long before Jimmy Buffett recorded "A Pirate Looks at 40," the city of Tampa, Florida, started the Gasparilla Festival as a celebration of the piratic career of José Gaspar. Being a pirate, Gaspar was every bit as kind and pleasant as Tony Soprano or any other career criminal. However, the United States Navy put an end to Gaspar's depredations in 1821, so by 1954 none of his victims were around to complain. Gasparilla celebrates a sanitized version of the pirate, a glamorous figure who dressed flamboyantly and didn't have to work regular hours or pay taxes.


In northwest Florida, Fort Walton Beach didn't want to get left out of the game, transforming its annual water skiing festival into the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival. But if Gasparilla had little to do with the the historic José Gaspar, the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival had even less to do with William Augustus Bowles. It's true that Bowles was an adventurer and later a pirate in Florida, but he was never in Fort Walton Beach or its immediate area. He was also never called "Billy Bowlegs." Seminole chief Holata Micco was known as Billy Bowlegs, but he wasn't a pirate and he didn't live in the Panhandle. Billy Bowlegs the Pirate is a fantasy figure, but that's okay. Fantasy pirates are fun, but you wouldn't want to be in the same room with a real pirate--not if you had something he wanted.


State of Muskogee FlagFort Walton Beach does have priority over Tampa in adding a road race to their pirate festival. The Gasparilla Distance Classic was first run in 1978, but Billy Bowlegs Midnight Run goes back to 1975. The Fort Walton Beach race was run for the 41st time on 6 June 2015 as the Billy Bowlegs 5K, no longer run at midnight but at 9:00 PM. Dewayne Riley of Milton, Florida, won the night race in 16:37. Colorado Springs athlete Kyle Van Zile was second in 17:00. In a showdown of graduating seniors from rival high school's, Choctawhatchee's Sean White edged Fort Walton Beach's Trey LaNasa for third, 17:39 to 17:40. Gulf Breeze High graduating senior Matthew Babikow finished fifth in 18:14. Chris Neal of Pace, Florida, was the fastest master runner in the field, outleaning Niceville master runner Chris Reid 18:55 to 18:56 for 14th place overall.


Arkansas Razorback cross country runner Logan Bishop captured the women's crown at the 2015 Bowlegs 5K, coming in 16th overall in 19:05. Niceville High graduating senior Nicole Escoffier was second in the women's standings, finishing 26th overall in 20:34. Destin's Erin Eubanks was the third woman finisher, 29th overall in 20:46. The top woman master and fourth female finisher was Michelle Williams of Milton, Florida, 30th overall in 20:51.


495 athletes finished the 41st annual Billy Bowlegs Race. The run was timed and scored by Results Event Timing, LLC, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
