Seppala and Thompson win at Adel

"We throw a festival for just about everything. From nature's bounty: apples, azaleas, roses, geraniums, camelias, catfish, crawfish, grits, granite, honeybees, mayhaws, moonshine, mules, onions, peaches, pecans, peanuts, pigs, and shrimp. And if-you-can't-beat-'em-throw-'em-a-party: rattlesnakes, fire ants, kudzu, and buzzards."

William Schemmel (2007), Georgia Curiosities.

When William Schemmel was remarking on the proliferation of Georgia festivals, he forgot to mention that each festival seems to have its own road race. Some of the older runs are 10K, while the more recent events tend to be 5K. Adel, Georgia's Adelily Festival 5K is one of those newer races. Only in its second year in 2010, the event moved out of Reed Bingham park and into Adel, dropped the 10K "Blossom Trot," and added a one-mile fun run. It couldn't have been much different from starting a new race from scratch.

In the 2010 edition of the race last Saturday, June 5, Valdosta's John Seppala took top honors, winning by nearly 200 meters in 18:58. Seppala was also the top master finisher in the race. The women's winner was Becky Thompson of Gainesville, Georgia, who was also the fastest woman master of the morning. Thompson placed fifth overall in 25:34.

  1. Nicely done, Herb! I love the quote at the beginning & can hear you reading it aloud in your "Southern Drawl" mode. The logo is lovely, too! It's the little touches! Thanks for sharing!
