New race for Bainbridge, new wins for Banks and Braswell

In Bainbridge, Georgia 70 athletes, give or take a few, gathered along the Flint River at Earle May Boat Basin on Saturday morning, 8 June 2013. They were there to run a new race on a new course. When they were done, there were two new champions--Dre Banks and Amber Braswell--and two new course records--18:30 and 24:13. It was Bainbridge Leisure Services Department's inaugural Spring 5K.


There had been other races at the boat basin. The Bainbridge Kiwanis River Run is held there annually, and almost two miles of the Bainbridge Half Marathon goes through the park. But this was going to be a 5K, and a 5K with an accurate, USATF certified course. Tallahassee's Bill McGuire measured the course and filed the papers; there was going to be no doubt that the Bainbridge Spring 5K was 3.1 miles long.


Bainbridge High School rising senior Dre Banks was leading right after the start of the race. When he crossed the finish line with a winning 18:30, he was nearly two hundred meters ahead of the runner up, Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell. Waddell's time was 19:12. Third place went to Caleb Harris of Bainbridge with a 21:16. Bainbridge runner Robert Meredith was fourth in 23:27.


Bainbridge High graduate Amber Braswell took fifth place and the first female spot, running 24:23. The runner up in the division and the first woman master was Bainbridge's Julie Harris, who placed 13th overall in 26:43.


69 athletes finished the first Bainbridge 5K.
