Hurricane Michael made landfall in Bay County Florida on 10 October 2018 as a Category 5 storm. Damage was so severe that even four months later, the Bay Education Foundation had to cancel the 2019 Strides For Scholars 5K.But the Florida Panhandle recovered. And on Saturday morning, 29 February 2020, the Strides For Scholars 5K returned to the streets of Panama City, Florida. Eddie Kepran, a frosh year athlete on the Arnold High cross-country team, won the eighth annual race, running the 3.1-mile course in 18:02. Kathryn Underhill, a senior on the Mosley High cross-country squad, won the women's title, placing sixth overall in 20:19.
Deon Peeples finished runner-up in 18:20. Nico Waddell, the 2018 Strides For Scholars 5K champ, took third in 18:30. Arnold High sophomore and cross-country runner Kelton Blue ran 18:50 for fourth. Thomas Dever was the first master runner in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 19:02.
Jamie Phillips was the first woman master and second female finisher, eleventh overall in 21:39. Amber Nichols grabbed third in the women's standings, placing third in 22:15.
The Strides For Scholars includes a sort of team competition for Bay County Schools, the Superintendent's Silver Shoe award. School are scored by the average time of their top three runners. Arnold High won the 2020 Silver Shoe with the performances of overall winner Kepron (18:02), fourth-place finisher Blue (18:50), and seventh-place runner Juan Garcia (20:41), a sophomore on the cross-country team.
318 athletes finished the 2020 Strides For Scholars 5K. The race is a benefit for the Bay Education Foundation.
