Seminole alums Stan Linton and Jennifer Lima reign at the Palace Saloon 5K

During the 48 runnings of the Palace Saloon Road Race since 1975, many athletes and alums of the Florida State University track teams have won that Tallahassee, Florida 5000-meter event. On the men's side these include George West, Paul Waldron, Tom Herron, Tim Simpkins, and Greg Doss. Among the women's winners were Seminoles Laura Ledbetter, Kathy Moore, Darien Andreu, Margaret Coomber, and Lindsay Zeiler. After the 48th Palace, you'll want to make sure that Stan Linton and Jennifer Lima are on those lists. Linton, who ran for the Florida State from 2014 to 2018, was first in the Palace on Saturday morning 15 April 2023, running 14:54. In that same race, Lima, a Lady Seminole distance runner from 2017 to 2022, took the women's title with a 17:08, placing tenth overall.

The 2023 Palace started at 8:00 AM with 600 meters of running straight west on Jackson Bluff Road towards the first turn onto Appleyard Drive. Linton was already in the lead.

"During the first 400 meters I might have had a few guys with me," he recalled. "But after the first turn I was running alone."

Linton was still running alone on the second kilometer.

"I hit the first mile in 4:46," said Linton. "It should have been in the 4:30s. But I hit the next mile in 4:46, too. I ran even today which I usually don't do in this race."

Even pacing got Linton to the finish line first in 14:54, 140 meters ahead of the next runner. Alberto Mena, the Springtime 10K champ two weeks earlier, took second in 15:20. The same day, Ryan Ziskinder had won the Springtime 5K; at the Palace he was third in 15:32. The next two athletes also broke 16:00--Adam Wallenfelsz was fourth in 15:49 and William Whelan fifth in 15:57. Brian Erb was the first master runner in the race,

Just as Linton led the men to the first turn, Jennifer Lima was the first woman to that corner. Lima turned onto Appleyard just a few steps ahead of Katie Sherron, the winning woman at the Palace in 2021 and 2022. Back in 2021, Sherron had won the master women's title at the USATF National Club Cross-Country Championships, running 22:08.7 for 6K at Apalachee Regional Park. But a month earlier on that same Apalachee Regional Park course, Lima had run 21:14.5 in the women's 6K at the NCAA D1 Cross-Country Championships, her last meet as a Seminole. So it wasn't entirely a surprise when Lima ran away from Sherron and the rest of the women's field, crossing the finish line at the Palace Saloon in 17:08. It was the fastest time by a woman in the Palace 5K since the 2005 race, when Irish Olympian Breeda Willis ran 16:31, the Palace record for women.

Sherron was the first woman master, taking second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 17:34. It was Sherron's best mark yet at the Palace. Renee Lynch, an alumna of the University of West Florida cross-country team, was the third female finisher and 26th overall in 18:54.

Lima's departure from Florida State marked the end for her of eight years of running on teams--both high school and college. Since then?

"I've been making up my own workouts," said Lima. "I'm trying to run every day. It's hard to do it alone. I'm still in Tallahassee, which is good, because there are so many great places to train."

Although Lima continued to train following the end of her career as a Seminole, she didn't race until two weeks before the 2023 Palace, re-entering competition by winning the women's division in the 45th annual Springtime 10K. The Palace was her second race after leaving FSU and her second win. It was probably also her most rewarding--in addition to the usual awards, Lima earned 8-3/4 pounds of Register's Sausage. Linton also won a huge package of links.

"Don't forget your box of Register's Sausage!" called Race Director Dr. Jeanne O'Kon, as Linton left the awards presentations.
