When it came to Valdosta, Georgia's New Year's Day 5K on 1 January 2025, though, it was 2024 all over again. Just like in 2024, the overall winner was Patrick Wallace. And just like in 2024, Reese Miller was first in the women's standings.
There were some differences, though. This time around, Patrick Wallace was a senior at Valdosta High, not a junior. And Wallace's winning time was 17:06, twelve seconds faster than in 2024. After all, when we celebrate change on New Year's Day, we hope it's change for the better.
Reese Miller's time was certainly better. Placing seventh overall, Miller ran 21:39, almost a minute-and-a-half faster than the previous year. 2025 Miller would have come close to lapping 2024 Miller on a track.
Adel, Georgia athlete Gary Rowan was the overall runner-up, covering the course in 17:56. Eric Foster of Valdosta took third in 19:08. The first master runner in the race was Jim O'Connor of Hahira, Georgia; O'Connor came in fifth overall in 20:31.
In the women's standings, Valdosta's Kelly Lunceford was runner-up, placing twelfth overall in 23:28. Tamara Martin of Valdosta was the first woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 23:46.
72 athletes finished the 2025 Valdosta New Year 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services. Proceeds of the race went to support the Valdosta State University cross-country program. If you want to start next year by supporting the VSU harriers, look for the return of the Valdosta New Year's Day 5K on Thursday, 1 January 2026.
