Smooth sailing for Bennett and Jimison at the Anchors Away 6K

Mason Bennett has run quite a few five-kilometer races for the Arnold High cross country team. He'll be running quite a few more as a sophomore on the team during fall 2016. Six kilometers is a bit farther, but Bennett had no problem with the additional distance on Saturday morning, 4 June 2016, at the fifth annual Anchors Away 6K. The Arnold High harrier won that race by over half a kilometer, running 23:54 on the trails of Panama City Beach, Florida's Conservation Park. Harrogate, Tennessee master runner Deanna Jimison captured the women's crown, coming in seventh overall in 29:41. 105 athletes finished the race.

Michael Shaw finished runner-up in 26:23 and Ken Rose took third in 27:35. Ross Clemons was the top master runner in the 6K, placing fourth overall in 27:37.

Norma McPherson was the second woman and tenth overall in 31:14. Master runner Lori Bakhouse was third in the women's standings, placing fifteenth overall in 32:26.

The Anchors Away 6K and associated one-mile family fun run were a fundraiser benefiting Anchorage Children's Home. Gulf Coast Race Timing timed the race.

Meredith and Hough run away with Anchors Away

Anchors Aweigh 6KOn Saturday morning, 27 June 2015, a light summer rain was falling on the Panama City Beach, Florida, Conservation Park. But it wasn't enough of a shower to discourage 89 athletes from showing up for the 4th annual Anchors Away 6K on Gayle's Trails. Nor was it enough to dampen the performance of Bellarmine University Knight distance runner Samuel Meredith. Meredith won the race by 700 meters, setting a new event record of 20:55. The old record was 22:15, run in 2012 at the inaugural Anchors Away 6K by Ryan Lutes.

Sam Meredith was the top master in the 3.73-mile race, finishing runner-up in 23:41. Corey Gardner came in third at 26:12.

Tracie Hough took the women's title in the Anchors Away 6K, placing seventh overall in 29:00. Right behind Hough, Jennifer Suewho was the top woman master and second female finisher, eighth overall in 29:16. Another master runner, Rebecca McConell, was third in the women's standings, coming in ninth overall in 29:41.

The Anchors Away 6K and associated one-mile family fun run were a fundraiser benefiting Anchorage Children's Home.

Stevenson and Berschwinger sail through Gayle's Trails in the Anchors Away 6K

Anchors Aweigh 6KI'm not sure how many times I've written about the significance of the six-kilometer distance. In cross country, it's the NCAA championship distance for women and the IAAF world championship distance for female juniors. In the Tallahassee area, Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Flash 12K has included a 6K race since 2009. Another Gulf Winds Track Club event, the Tannenbaum Trail 6K, has been contested on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course since 2011. Also in northwest Florida, Anchorage Children's Home staged their third annual Anchor's Away 6K on Gayle's Trails in the Panama City Beach Conservation Park on Saturday morning, 28 June 2014.

Paul Stevenson of the Arizona State University Triathlon Club won the event in 22:56. Just six weeks earlier, Stevenson had been in Tempe, competing in the USAT Collegiate National Championships, where he had finished 16th in the sprint triathlon and 44th in the Olympic triathlon. In Florida, though, he had set the bicycle and the wetsuit aside long enough to score a victory in the Anchors Away 6K, finishing nearly 100 meters ahead of runner-up Landon Jones. Jones ran 23:20, while Mike Curtin was third in 23:57. Robert Newton of Rogersville, Alabama, was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 25:49. Tyler Newton, a rising sophomore on the Lauderdale County High cross-country team, took fifth in 26:40.

Finishing sixth overall, Voorheesville, New York, marathon runner Jessica Berschwinger ran a women's event-record time of 26:50 to take the Anchors Away women's title. Thirteen-year-old Catherine Maclean of Lynn Haven was second in the women's standings, finishing 13th ovderall in 30:33. Debbie Chitwood was the first woman master and third female finisher, 14th overall in 31:51.

76 athletes finished the trail run, a fundraiser for Anchorage Children's Home. I don't know why the race is named "Anchors Away" instead of "Anchors Aweigh," but I'll assume that it's a clever joke that someone will have to explain to me. Timing and finish line services were provided by Warrior Race Timing.
