Anderson and Liles-Weyant lead a women's sweep of Run 2-1-1

Isabel AndersonAt 2-1-1 Big Bend's second annual Run 2-1-1, Isabel Anderson won the 10K race in 48:07, coming in just ahead of top master April Bentley who was second in 48:18. Craig Asselin was the first male finisher, third overall in 50:18, while Clement Allen was the first male master, fourth overall in 50:32. In the 5K race, Tallahassee master woman Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the overall winner in 19:33, and master runner Mike Weyant was the top male finisher, second overall in 20:53.


2-1-1 Big Bend's second run through the Southwood community of Tallahassee, Florida, started on a cool, clear Saturday morning, 31 January 2015. Unlike 2014, the second Run 2-1-1 included a 10K in addition to the 5K. It wasn't the only change; there was also a new course.


"Featuring never before run tracks!" declared the race materials.


This was possible because Schoolhouse Road had just been extended east and Biltmore Avenue extended south, meeting in a new intersection. What wasn't mentioned about the "never before run tracks" was that both the 10K course and the 5K course took the runners on a climb from the coastal plain up into the Red Hills via the slopes of the Cody Scarp. In brief, both races got to do a lot of uphill two kilometers from the finish line.


Everyone had to do the same uphill, though, including 10K winner Isabel Anderson.


"I was really surprised," said Anderson about the win. "I though someone was ahead of me the whole time."


Instead, Anderson led the way up every hill on her way to a 48:07 win. If no one was ahead, though, someone was not far behind. April Bentley finished less than 40 meters behind Anderson in 48:18, finishing second overall as the second woman and first woman master. Top male finisher Craig Asselin was likewise only just over 50 meters ahead of master runner Clement Allen as they crossed the finish line in 50:18 and 50:32.

In the 5K, it was very clear to everyone that Stephanie Liles-Weyant was leading the race. Unfortunately, without anyone to follow, Liles-Weyant breezed by a turn that the 5K runners were supposed to make half a kilometer into the race. She continued onto the 10K course for a few seconds until Mike Weyant shouted a correction. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was soon leading again and made it to the finish line without additional detours, winning in 19:33. Mike Weyant, who happens to be married to the winner, was second in 20:53.

Guillen and Showman run like greyhounds at Doggie Dash

Tony GuillenOn Saturday morning, 16 March 2013, for the third year in a row the Corrections Foundation hosted their annual Doggie Dash in the Southwood community of Tallahassee, Florida. For the second year in a row, the Doggie Dash included an 8K race. For the first time, Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen won the Doggie Dash 8K, covering the nearly five-mile distance in 29:48. FSU Economics professor Katie Showman was the fastest woman finisher, placing seventh overall in 32:33.


Paul GuyasThe race started right at 9:00 AM from Southwood's Central Park, where it would finish five miles later. Tony Guillen and Peter Kaus set the pace for the field, running side-by-side through the first two kilometers. Running through the Southwood Town Center, Guillen grabbed a step on Kaus. Kaus couldn't take it back. Guillen finished the third kilometer with a lead, then spent the rest of the race running away from Kaus, winning the race in 29:47. Behind Guillen, Kaus was losing ground to Paul Guyas over the last kilometer, but not enough to lose his position. Kaus took second over Guyas, 29:47 to 30:58.


Katie ShowmanThe duel between Tony Guillen and Peter Kaus in the men's race had no parallel in the women's competition. Katie Showman, the women's defending champion and course record holder, led the women's field from the start of the race to the end. Her winning time of 32:33 put her 700 meters ahead of the women's runner-up, Jillian Heddaeus. Heddaeus placed 11th overall in 35:29. The third woman finisher and first woman master was Kim Curran, who finished 17th overall in 38:14.

Sheryl RosenThe original Doggie Dash in 2011 was a 5K, and there is still a Doggie Dash 5K, run at the same time as the 8K race. There has never been a Doggie Dash 5K that Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen didn't run; this year was her third. Rosen went to the front of the 5K field almost immediately; the only runners in front of her were the leaders of the 8K. Just behind Rosen was Lisa Johnson. Johnson never lost sight of Rosen, but she was also never able to challenge the leader. At the end of the 3.1-mile race, Rosen was the winner in 18:18, with Lisa Johnson runner-up in 18:54. Completing an unusual women's sweep of the first three places, master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant took third with a 19:22. Vicky Droze almost made it four-for-four for the women, but although she was moving up over the last kilometer she couldn't quite catch Tallahassee master runner Michael Weyant. Weyant, the first male finisher, ended up fourth overall in 20:38 with Droze fifth in 20:43.
