Chase Harris wins 2009 AIDS 5K

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park, Chase Harris of outran all comers at the 18 October 2009 AIDS 5K run, held by Big Bend Cares. At 19:16.97, twelve-year-old Harris finished comfortable ahead of runner-up and top master, Jonathan Hunt, who ran 19:32. The top woman finisher was Lynn Masimore of Tallahassee, tenth overall with a time of 23:10.90. Lisa Cox finished as top master at thirteenth overall in 24:17--her second straight weekend in that position after having won top master honors at the FSU Invitational open 5K eight days earlier.

The race more closely resembled a cross-country run than a road race; the runners went twice around a loop that included the paved Goose Pond Trail and some of the park's natural trails through the woods. Big Bend Cares had more than a few course marshals directing the runners, but perhaps they could have used one more--race winner Harris mentioned that he taken a wrong turn along the way.
