Stevens and Welden spawn wins at the Salmonole 5K

Just over a year ago Connor Stevens wasn't a runner, but on Saturday morning, 2 October 2010, he ran 18:24 to win the second annual Salmonole 5K on Florida State University's main campus in Tallahassee. Dr. Michael LaBossiere was the first master runner, placing fourth overall in 21:06. Dena Welden came out on top in the women's division, running 21:47 to pick up her second win in a campus race this fall, having won FSU Habitat For Humanity's "Home Is Where The Hope Is" 5K three weeks earlier. Marien Dimacali was the second woman in and the first woman master, placing 22nd overall in 24:57.

The runners started south on Woodward Plaza at 8:00am ET. Less than 100m into the race Stevens was already in front. He had stretched this to a commanding lead by the middle of the second kilometer, when the runners were on Copeland Street making the long climb up Gallows Hill. When Stevens reached the four kilometer mark on Chieftain Way, his competitors were out of sight behind him. Arriving back at Woodward Plaza, Stevens crossed the finish line with no challengers in sight. After just over a year as a runner, it was Stevens' first win and his first time under 19:00 for 5K. Dena Welden also took an early lead on her rivals, getting a minute ahead by halfway and going on to win by over three minutes.

The Salmonole Run is put on by Florida State University's Thalassic Society, an organization run by the graduate students of the Department of Oceanography. The course, which starts and finishes at the Integration Statue on Woodward Plaza, is the same as that used earlier this year for the FSU First Responders 5K and the "Run For The Fallen" 5K, as well as for the inaugural Salmonole 5K in 2009.
