Finlayson dogs them all at Barktoberfest

Jay FinlaysonJay Finlayson might have been running a time trial. The Aucilla Christian Academy cross-country runner was alone, far ahead of the field for most of the race, when he recorded a winning 17:11 in the Barktoberfest 5K on Saturday afternoon, 15 October 2011, in Monticello, Florida. The runner-up, Jason Ketterer, was about a kilometer behind Finlayson. Ketterer's time was 21:37. At 22:06 Sean Gray was the third runner in and the first master. Arianna Neely was the first female finisher, placing fifth overall in 25:08, just ahead of female runner-up Kim Nickel (6th, 25:14). Rhonda Kenyon (7th, 26:41) was the top woman master.

Start of the Barktoberfest 5KMore than a few road races are fundraisers for animal shelters. In the immediate area, the Tails & Trails 10K/5K benefits the Tallahassee-Leon County Animal Shelter Foundation, the Run For Rover benefits the Thomas County Humane Society, and the Mike-The-Dog Run benefits Cauzican Animal Rescue. Maybe it's because dogs love to run. Or maybe it's just because animal aid groups are chronically underfunded and are willing to try any kind of event to raise cash. Whatever the reason, add the Barktoberfest 5K to the list of events supporting animal groups, in this case the Jefferson County Humane Society, which needs money to build a new headquarters.

Steve BaraccoQuite appropriately, then, the race started on Mamie Scott Drive near the old Humane Society building in Monticello, and finished at the future site of the new Humane Society east of Monticello along US 90. Athletes at the start were about evenly divided between entries in the 5K and entries in a duathlon. The duathletes would continue on after the 5K, bicycling another 10K on trails and then concluding their event with a 3K cross-country run.

Jane JohnsonAfter Finlayson had wrapped up his win, Doug Bell was the next to complete 5K, but Bell wasn't finished--he was in the duathlon and had a bike ride ahead of him. A few seconds behind Bell were two more duathlon entries, Jeff Nielsen and Steve Baracco. Baracco made up those seconds on the next two legs of the race, going on to win the duathlon in 65:56. Bell was second in 66:42 and Nielsen third in 68:18. Jane Johnson was the first woman as well as the first woman master in the duathlon, putting up a 74:17 for the event.
