"Shouldn't they be back by now?" asked one of the volunteers.
"Yes," I opined.
Blame it one a poorly staffed turnaround, blame it on a leader and defending champion who ran past the turnaround, blame it on whomever or whatever you like, but the fact was that 67 runners were headed up the Goose Pond Trail and weren't likely to stop before they got to Weems Road, if then. Fortunately, a cyclist got the field headed back toward Tom Brown Park, a two-loop course was hastily modified to a one-loop course, and the event was saved. Sort of. At least everyone ran finished something--probably not quite three miles, and certainly not as long as five kilometers.
2010 AIDS run champion Michael Nesius was first across the line in the revised race, running 16:30 for the distance (whatever it was). Nesius was over 400 meters ahead of the runner-up, Lincoln High freshman cross-country runner Jaryd Walton. Walton was coming off a personal best 18:51 5K cross-country run the previous day at the Gulf Coast Cross Country Stampede in Pensacola. The first female finisher was Paula O'Neill, who was also the first master, placing seventh overall in 21:52. The first male master was Mark O'Neill, eighth overall in 22:30.

Thanks for the blog Herb,
ReplyDeleteThe turn around on the Goose pond trail was staffed, it was about 50-100 meters before Weems road... since the Goose is 5k out-and-back, the race was probably about 3miles
I may be confused as to what the course was supposed to be. At least some runners thought that it was a two-loop course. That's what was run in 2009 and 2010, with a turnaround just beyond the playground. I don't know if the runners were told this at the starting line, or if these were veterans of the first two AIDS runs who assumed the course hadn't changed. There was also a water table set up that would have come at the end of the first loop of a two-loop race (i.e., about midway), or after a one-loop race was entirely over. Admittedly, what was run was a one-loop course. I'm not a fan of GPS measurement, but Paula O'Neill's unit clocked the course at 2.92 miles.
