Thatcher and Allen are the first champions of the Lowndes Middle 5K

Covering a 3.1-mile course in 18:37, Tayler Thatcher won the Lowndes Middle School 5K in Valdosta, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 1 February 2014. Thatcher is an exercise physiology major at Valdosta State University. Lowndes High senior Tyler Thurman finished second behind Thatcher with a 18:53. Thurman is an alumnus of Lowndes Middle School, the hosts of the race. Valdosta's Nathan Smith was third in 21:26.


Finishing fourth overall in 21:57, Valdosta master runner Tammy Jo Allen was the first woman across the finish line. The women's runner-up was Bethany Bradbury of Valdosta; Bradbury placed fifth overall in 23:58.


The first male master runner was Joseph Dukes of Valdosta, eighth overall in 25:07. 40 athletes finished the first-year race, a benefit for the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.
