Back on 26 February 2011, Valdosta's James Marino finished runner-up to the Masked Avenger at the
Art Of Surviving 5K in Hahira. Two weeks later Marino won the
Azalea Festival 5K, but the Masked Avenger was out of town that weekend. They next met at the
'Dosta Dash 10K on March 26, where once again Marino finished behind the Avenger. (Of course, they both finished behind the race winner, Scot Naylor, but try to follow the story, okay?) But on 30 April 2011 ran 17:35 to win Dewar Elementary School's "Catch Me If You Can" 5K, defeating the defending champion, the Masked Avenger, by nearly 200 meters. The Avenger placed runner-up in the Valdosta event, posting a time of 18:10 and finishing about 400 meters ahead of the 19:42 of the third place runner, Wes Hand of Nashville, Georgia. Lowndes High freshman Tyler Thurman was fourth in 20:10. Stacey Griffin (9th, 22:17) was the top male master in the race.
Valdosta's Jody Penney won the women's competition, finishing 14th overall in 22:58. Just nine seconds back, Angel Godwin of Valdosta was the second woman across the finish line, 15th overall in 23:07. Valdosta runner Libby Smith was the top woman master and third woman finisher, placing 16th overall in 23:24.
