Josiah Friddle and Kelsey Hanger lead the return of the Half-Shell Hustle

Franklin County High School is just a few miles on US 98 and a trip across the John Gorrie Bridge from Apalachicola, Florida. So Josiah Friddle, a frosh on the FCHS cross-country team, didn't have far to travel to Apalachicola's Half-Shell Hustle 5K on Saturday morning, 15 January 2022. Friddle's commute didn't take long; neither did his run. The Franklin County harrier ran 19:49, winning the eighth annual race. Kelsey Hanger was the first woman in the 5K, placing sixth overall in 22:42.


Just out of striking distance, Tallahassee, Florida master runner Michael Martinez was runner-up in 20:03. Anthony Walker took third in 21:27.


Eden Keene took second in the women's standings behind Kelsey Hanger, placing eighth overall in 23:55. A veteran of the Half-Shell Hustle, Keene had won the women's division in the 2018 and 2019 races. Sam Fortunas was the third woman and ninth overall in 24:19. The first woman master in the Hustle wasa Laurie Gregory, at 30:17 the fourth female and twentieth overall.


109 athletes finished the 2022 Half-Shell Hustle, the race's largest field yet.

The 2014 Half-Shell Hustle was a 3,000-fathom race (just under 5,500 meters) Because of COVID-19, there was no 2021 Half-Shell Hustle.
