Asouzu and Wandahl lead a constellation of stars recognizing America's fallen at Fort Rucker

Each year starting in 2012, Fort Rucker in Alabama has held a 5K race in honor of Gold Star Families and the fallen soldiers that they've lost. Runners are invited to wear a star pinned to their clothing during the race, each star carries the name of a fallen hero. Athletes may also personalize a star, adding the name of a particular soldier. The Fort Rucker Survivor Outreach Services program provides the stars.


"These stars are a visual reminder of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice," wrote the race organizers.


Fort Rucker hosted the sixth annual Survivors and Fallen Heroes 5K on Saturday morning, 3 June 2017. Columbus State University cross-country runner Charles Asouzu was the overall winner, outkicking Ted Heikkila 16:29 to 16:32 for the title. Evan Crawford, a rising sophomore on the Enterprise High cross-country team, took third in 16:46. James Spruel was the top master runner in the race, placing 23rd overall in 21:37.


Master runner Kristine Wandahl was the first woman in the race, Jill Fassl, a cross-country runner going into her junior year at Enterprise High, finished second in the women's standings and 32nd overall in 22:41. Morgan Greene was the third woman and 36th overall in 23:06; Svenja Adriance was fourth in the women's standings and 38th overall in 23:13.


Wearing a constellation of stars recognizing the fallen, 174 athletes finished the 2017 Survivors and Fallen Heroes 5K.

Bernard and Wandahl take titles in the Ten-Mile Run Off at Fort Rucker

The Army Ten-Miler has always been an autumn race. 2017 is no different; the 33rd Army Ten-Miler comes to the streets of Washington, DC on 8 October 2017. However, no athlete can start training just a few days before a ten-mile race and expect to be successful. That's why at Fort Rucker, Alabama--where teams have had a long history of success in the Army Ten-Miler--the selection race for their ten-mile teams has always been a spring event. It was a spring event once again on Saturday morning, 29 April 2017, when Cyrus Bernard won the Fort Rucker Ten-Mile Run-Off in 65:04, finishing with a 700-meter lead on the next runner. Kristine Wandahl was the women's champ as well as the top master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 78:44.


Fawad Safi took second in the Ten Miler, running . Six week earlier Safi had won Fort Rucker's Shamrock Shuffle 10K, running 18:52. Daniel Prial placed third in 68:23.


Marjory Bernard was second in the women's standings and tenth overall in 91:08. Mollie Rayburn was the third woman and twelfth overall in 99:08.


27 athletes finished Fort Rucker's 2017 Ten-Mile Run-Off.

Flyers Seymour and MacGibbon fly fastest at Gate-to-Gate

On Saturday morning, 28 September 2013, just three weeks before their big test at the Army Ten Miler, the Ft. Rucker Flyers were racing the roads at home in the Ft. Rucker's Hispanic Heritage Gate-to-Gate 4.2-mile run. The results were encouraging for the Fliers, with team captain David Seymour winning the race in 23:01. It was Seymour's second straight win in the annual race, and a considerable improvement on his 2012 winning time of 23:49. Another Flyer athlete Jennifer MacGibbon took the women's title, finishing seventh overall in 27:02. Bill Staniewicz, the Flyers assistant captain, was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in ninth overall at 27:19.


Unlike that other Gate-to-Gate race, held every Memorial Day on Eglin Air Force Base, the Ft. Rucker event actually goes from one gate to another--starting at the base's Ozark gate and finishing at the Daleville gate. For over a decade, now, the Eglin event has started and finished near a single gate to the base.


213 athletes finished the 2013 Hispanic Heritage Gate-to-Gate 4.2-mile run. The race was conducted by Ft. Rucker MWR through the Ft. Rucker Physical Fitness Center.

Announcing the Fort Rucker Flyers team for the 2013 Army Ten Miler

On 3 August 2013 SSG David Seymour, captain of the Fort Rucker Flyers Army Ten Miler team, announced the squad of eight athletes that will be competing for the Flyers in Washington, DC on 20 October 2013. Joining SSG Seymour on the roster are CW4 Bill Staniewicz, 2LT Brian Morenus, 2LT Matt Udermann, 2LT Mark Freeman, SFC Robbie Hickox, 2LT Jennifer MacGibbon, and CW4 Stephanie Rose.


SSG David Seymour is the only member of the team that also ran for the Flyers at last year's Army Ten Miler. A top finisher in area races from 5K to the half marathon during the past two years, earlier this summer Seymour won the 35th annual Hot Trot 5K in Chipley on 29 June 2013, running 16:36. Master runner Bill Staniewicz, the team's assistant captain, is an experienced marathoner who ran 3:12:38 at the Houston Marathon this year. This past spring Brian Morenus was a senior at West Point, competing on the Academy's track team and recording a 30:49.29 for 10,000-meters on the track. Since then, Morenus graduated, received his commission, and moved on to Fort Rucker. He has continued his athletic endeavors in the Wiregrass country, recently winning Dothan's Tasty Tiger Trot 5K Trail Run on 27 July 2013. Matt Udermann brings previous Army Ten Miler experience to the team. In 2011, Udermann ran 66:29 at the race, competing for the University of Minnesota ROTC team. He'll be wearing Fort Rucker colors at his second Army Ten Miler this October. Texan Mark Freeman brings another West Point ring (c/o 2012) to the Flyers.


The Fort Rucker will be competing in the Active Duty Open Mixed category of the team competition, which requires one of the team's scorers to be female. The Flyers have two women on the roster, Jennifer MacGibbon and Stephanie Rose, who ran 76:11 and 76:16 at Fort Rucker's Ten Mile Run Off this past May. Since then MacGibbon, who was on the varsity track team while at the United State Military Academy (c/o 2012), ran a 20:20 5K on trails to win the women's competition at the Tasty Tiger Trot on July 27. Rose clocked a 21:23 5K on the roads at the Hot Trot on June 29.


The Army Ten Miler is the largest ten-mile road race on the continent, if not in the world. Team competition in each category is fierce, but the Fort Rucker Flyers have a proud history of success at the race. Last year's squad placed second in the Active Duty Open Mixed division. In the five races before that, the Flyers won the division three times. Fort Rucker teams have even more titles from earlier years. The Flyers can be proud of that record, but it's also a burden--the athletes of the 2013 team will be measured against their predecessors as well as their competitors.


These eight Flyers seem up to the task.

Argyle, Haltom take the Ten at Fort Rucker

Priority registration for the 20 October 2013 29th annual Army Ten-Miler opened on 1 May 2013. Common folk were allowed to enter on 15 May 2013, or at least they were allowed to attempt to enter. The race was expected to sell out in a few hours, even though the size of the field is being increased to 35,000 this year. That's a lot of runners, soldiers and civilians, running in the streets of Washington, DC. In fact, the Army Ten-Miler is the third-largest ten-mile race in the world and the largest in North America.


May is also when Fort Rucker, Alabama holds its own Army Ten-Mile Run Off. Fort Rucker has a history of winning the Open Mixed Team division at the October Army Ten-Miler, and the Run Off in May is when the post's athletes start focusing on the big race. This year's Run Off started at 7:00 AM CT Saturday morning, 11 May 2013, from behind the base Fitness Facility. Jonathan Argyle won big, running 58:56 and finishing more than 800 meters ahead of the next runner, Sean Keefe. Keefe covered the ten mile tour of Fort Rucker in 62:55. Kevin Pawlik was the fastest master runner in the race, placing sixth in 68:35. Teresa Haltom took the women's title, finishing ninth overall in 70:34. The first woman master was Susan Fondy, 55th overall in 91:51.


86 athletes finished the ten-mile test, as well as eight 5 x 2-mile relay teams.
