Heikkinen and Coates are Critter Winners

Air Force Academy rising sophomore Tommy Heikkinen edged out his fellow Panama City Rutherford alumnus Brandon Hough, 17:14 to 17:17, to win Dothan, Alabama's 25th annual Critter Run 5K on 24 July 2010. Behind them in third place, Valparaiso's James Frazier ran 17:28 to win the master's title for the third straight year. The 2009 champion and runner-up, Andrew Norton and Charlie Johnson, finished fourth and fifth respectively in 17:35 and 17:57.

Winning the women's division, Tallahassee's Shannon Coates was ninth overall in 19:42. Emily Vall of Atlanta was the runner-up for the women, running 20:26 for 16th. The third woman in was last year's champion, Kara Taylor of Tallahassee (23rd, 21:15). Melissa Unrath of Enterprise, Alabama, captured women's master honors by finishing as the fourth female and 32nd runner overall in 21:54.

287 runners completed the 2010 Critter Run, which was hosted by the Dothan Runners Club. The course (USATF #AL86003JD) started and finished near Dothan's Westgate Park, touring a hilly residential area. Each year the race features a different "critter," and this year's animal was the polar bear. But the arctic origins of the race mascot had no effect on the weather. Despite being run on Saturday evening, race conditions were brutally hot, which everyone has come to expect after twenty-five years. Still, if you're going to race in July, you have to expect heat. And if you're racing in the tri-state area, you won't want to pass up the Critter Run.

Domingo and Coates take 2010 Red Hills Tri titles

There was still a slight spring chill in the Tallahassee air at 7:30am on Saturday, 3 April 2010. It wasn't enough to dissuade almost 300 competitors in the 2010 Red Hills Triathlon from jumping into Maclay Gardens' Lake Hall for a 1/3-mile swim, followed by a sixteen-mile bicycle ride and a five-kilometer run. When it was all over Dan Domingo of Jacksonville had won the tenth annual event in a time of 66:51, while Pensacola's Mark Sortino triumphed in the master men's division finishing sixth overall in 71:13. Shannon Coates won the women's title in 74:35, defeating Stephanie Liles, the 2008 and 2009 women's champion. Jules Kariher of Gulf Breeze was top among women masters, clocking 81:46 and placing 43rd overall.

Defending champion Thomas Barton was among the first athletes out of the water and was the first to leave the transition area on his bicycle, but fell out of contention during the ride--Domingo's chance to shine. Turning in the second-fastest cycling leg of the morning, Domingo was already 300 meters into the run before the next athlete, Charles Kemeny, had started the 5K leg. Barton made up some ground during the run, but was unable to catch the athletes that had passed him during the bike leg--Domingo, Kemeny, and James Thompson. Kemeny ended the event as runner-up behind Domingo in 68:24, Thompson was third in 69:41, and Barton fourth in 70:51.

The top men maintained their positions during the five-kilometer run, but that wasn't the case in the women's competition. After the best women's bicycle ride of the morning, Heidi Thompson started the run leading the women's division and had already covered 200 meters when Shannon Coates started running. Coates answered with the fastest five-kilometer leg by a woman at the race, and passed Thompson about halfway through the run. Stephanie Liles caught Thompson to take the runner-up spot in 75:09 while Thompson hung on for third in 75:30, but Coates won going away.

Black and Coates stomp the competition

John Black (not his real name) galloped away from over 200 runners to win the "Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes" 5K run on a cloudy Saturday morning in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park. Black's time for the 27 February 2010 race was 17:40. Shannon Coates, formerly a cross-country runner for Florida State University, won the women's division, finishing fifth overall in 19:17.

The race opened with the runners heading west through Tom Brown Park on the Goose Pond Trail, a paved multi-use trail. Tony Guillen led the field, closely followed by the pseudonymous Black and Kurt Dietrich, a Lincoln High School distance runner. Near the mile the runners turned around and returned nearly to the starting line before turning into the woods to run along forest paths. Guillen, Black, and Dietrich were still leading, with the rest of the field far behind. When the leaders re-emerged from the woods there was less than half a kilometer left in the race, and Black had taken the lead.

"It seemed like Tony got slower each mile," Black said later. "Finally I just had to go by him."

Black did go by Guillen, and go away as well, winning by nearly 40 meters. Guillen held on to second place, beating off a late charge by Dietrich; both runners were clocked in 17:48. As well as being the runner-up, Guillen was also the top master (over 40) runner in the race, finishing well ahead of the second master runner, Joel Piotrowski, who was seventh overall in 19:54.

Shannon Coates won the women's division handily. Starting off among the top ten runners, she moved up to fifth overall and was never challenged by any other woman. Jane Johnson was the second woman finisher and top woman master, finishing 17th overall in 21:59.

The 5K was part of the Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes carnival, a fundraiser for the Foundation for Leon County Schools. The carnival also included mountain bike races, games, and music. There were 217 finishers in the 5K, a very respectable turnout for a first year event, but one which must have led to congestion at the turnaround on the narrow Goose Pond Trail.
