John Black (not his real name) galloped away from over 200 runners to win the "Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes" 5K run on a cloudy Saturday morning in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park. Black's time for the 27 February 2010 race was 17:40. Shannon Coates, formerly a cross-country runner for Florida State University, won the women's division, finishing fifth overall in 19:17.
Black did go by Guillen, and go away as well, winning by nearly 40 meters. Guillen held on to second place, beating off a late charge by Dietrich; both runners were clocked in 17:48. As well as being the runner-up, Guillen was also the top master (over 40) runner in the race, finishing well ahead of the second master runner, Joel Piotrowski, who was seventh overall in 19:54.
The 5K was part of the Schools Stomping Out Type 2 Diabetes carnival, a fundraiser for the Foundation for Leon County Schools. The carnival also included mountain bike races, games, and music. There were 217 finishers in the 5K, a very respectable turnout for a first year event, but one which must have led to congestion at the turnaround on the narrow Goose Pond Trail.

ReplyDeleteSeeley,
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm not sure if "publicity" is the right word to use, but at least my three regular readers and the guy who got here accidentally by searching for "Type II statistical errors" had a chance to learn about the race. ;-)
Herb.
