Gulf Winds team triumphs at 25th annual Gate-to-Gate Run

Gulf Winds Track Club finished at the top of a field of nine open teams at the 2010 Gate-to-Gate 4.4-Mile Road Race, held on Memorial Day morning at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. The win was payback for GWTC's loss at the 2009 Gate-to-Gate to Northwest Florida Track Club. This time around, GWTC's total of 1:42:26 was just over a minute better than Northwest Florida Track Club, whose four runners totalled 1:43:30 to finish in the runner-up position. Scoring for Gulf Winds TC were Vince Molosky (4th, 23:58), Matthew Dobson (5th, 24:15), Justin Dickieson (10th, 25:49), and Micah Adriani (40th, 28:24). Open teams at Gate-to-Gate consist of four runners at least one of whom must be a woman.

1465 runners finished the 25th annual Gate-to-Gate, which was won by former Air Force Academy distance-runner Ben Payne, who covered the course in 22:14, finishing 280 meters ahead of his nearest challenger, Pensacola's Everett Whiteside. Whiteside ran 23:09 to finish as the top master. US Navy ensign and triathlete Derek Oskutis was third at 23:38, while GWTC scorers Molosky and Dobson were the next two runners across the line. Air Force Academy alumna Ilea Eskildsen was the top woman, finishing twelfth overall in 26:08 and successfully defending her 2009 Gate-to-Gate title. Gulf Winds TC's Adriani was runner-up for the women.

Molosky and Ryberg take the Tulip Trot 5K

Battling over 300 other runners, the first of the summer heat and humidity, and heavy traffic on a cramped Goose Pond Trail, Vince Molosky ran 16:36 to win the Tulip Trot 5K, held in Tom Brown Park on Saturday morning, 22 May 2010. Jay Wallace finished second overall, also capturing the top male master title. The women's championship went to Shana Ryberg, 18th overall in 21:12. Paula O'Neill was the top woman master, finishing 33rd overall in 23:15.

Molosky went to the front early. Through the first kilometer he was closely followed by Daniel Thompson and John Hazleton. During the second kilometer Molosky built up a lead on Thompson and Hazleton, who had their own pursuers. By the end of two kilometers John Robida had caught up to Thompson and Hazleton, and by three kilometers Jay Wallace had joined the group. Wallace outran the others over the final two kilometers to finish in 16:54, runner-up to Molosky by 90 meters. Robida was another 60 meters back in third place (17:06), while Thompson outkicked Hazleton for fourth, both runner clocking 17:17.

In the women's competition, Ryberg grabbed a lead almost immediately and built on it all the way to the finish line. Stephanie Stout and Cora Atkinson led the chase for Ryberg during the first kilometer, but were overtaken by Allison DeCort by the end of the second kilometer. During the the third kilometer DeCort moved ahead of Stout into the runner-up position. While Ryberg went on to win by 300 meters, DeCort beat out Stout for the second women's spot, 22:32 to 22:42. The fourth woman in was master runner O'Neill; Atkinson fell back to finish as fifth woman in 23:21.

It was Molosky's second win in Tom Brown Park during the month of May; back on May 1 he had won the Tails and Trails 10K. Ryberg represented Tallahassee at the Boston Marathon in April.

The Tulip Trot 5K was hosted by the North Florida Parkinson Awareness Group, and proceeds from the race benefited NFPAG and the Parkinson Choir at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. If the course was a bit cramped for the number of runners, but the gentle slopes were popular with the competitors, as was the post-race musical entertainment by the Parkinson Choir and the Tuesday Bluegrass Jam Group.

Leon County dedicates new bridge in Lake Henrietta Park

The new bridge over Munson Slough in Lake Henrietta Park has been completed for several weeks now, but Leon County made official notice of the opening with a ribbon cutting on Thursday morning, 20 May 2010. County Commission Chairman Bob Rackleff headed up the dignitaries at the event, which seemed to be attended mostly by people with large video cameras. Through it all, people kept using the park for their morning walking or cycling, without giving the ceremony much notice.

The bridge is the last link in a 380-yard trail that connects the city of Tallahassee's Silver Lake Park with Leon County's Lake Henrietta Park. The trail is a path lined with crushed oyster shell running along a creek, the East Drainage Ditch. (Someone really needs to come up with a better name for that.) Turning to follow Munson Slough, the trail mounts a ramp of planks made from recycled plastic. Another turn takes the trail over the slough on the actual bridge, a sturdy affair of concrete and steel. Whoever engineered it must expect our national obesity crisis to get worse before it gets better. Once across the bridge, you are on the Lake Henrietta Trail, a 6600-foot loop around Lake Henrietta.

Lake Henrietta Park and the new connector trail are part of the Capital Cascades Greenway, which combines upgrading stormwater management with building new recreational facilities. Speakers at the ribbon cutting also said that the Lake Henrietta Trail will connect with the Tallahassee-St Marks Historic Rail Trail via the Dr. Charles Billings Greenway. For more than a few years, the Billings Greenway has been one of those trails that people like to include in reports and articles, but is very difficult to walk or run or bike because it doesn't exist outside of those reports and articles. However, an unpaved trail already connects Lake Henrietta with Lake Munson. In spite of my impatience, the community's network of trails continues to grow.

McDonald and Smoot win 5K in Kinderlou Forest

Austin McDonald, a cross-country runner for the Valdosta State University Blazers, blazed to a 16:55 5K on the roads of Kinderlou Forest, good enough for the win at the Racing with Rotary Charity Run on Saturday morning, 15 May 2010. A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia and sophomore at VSU, McDonald finished 350 meters ahead of the runner up, Valdosta-native Parker Childree. Childree, who runs cross country at Young Harris College, clocked in at 18:11. Scot Gardner of Naylor was the top master in the race, placing fourth overall in 19:11.In the women's division, Valdosta's Alice Smoot was overall winner and top master, finishing tenth in 21:05, 60 meters ahead of runner-up Brandi Faircloth of Hahira. Faircloth was eleventh overall in 21:20.

The race was sponsored by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Valdosta, Georgia, as a benefit for the Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch near Hahira. The 5K course took the runners on a rolling tour of the Kinderlou Forest area, starting and finishing at the Kinderlou Forest Recreation Center. The course was new this year, the 2009 Racing With Rotary Charity Run having been staged on the VSU campus.

Walking on water--hiking across the Apalachicola

If you're through-hiking the Florida National Scenic Trail or you have some other reason to be walking across the Florida panhandle, you're eventually going to have to cross the Apalachicola River. Some river crossings on the Florida Trail are a bit iffy. At St Marks, for instance, the trail simply stops at the banks of the St Marks River, where a small signs advises you to "Hail Boat to Cross." Crossings of the Aucilla and Suwanee rivers are on highway bridges. The crossing of the Apalachicola is also on a highway bridge, the eastbound span of the Trammell Bridge, which carries traffic on SR 20 from Blountstown to Bristol. But you don't have to worry about sociopaths in motor vehicles trying to knock you into the river because the bridge has a dedicated lane for pedestrians and bicycles.

The hiker/biker lane was included when the eastbound span was built in the late 1990s. Before that, the Trammell Bridge was an old two-lanes-with-no-shoulder span that dated back to the 1930s. I remember riding to track meets in Panama City on a school bus back in the 1970s; going across the old bridge could be thrilling. The old bridge is now the westbound span of the bridge, with no room for pedestrians or cyclists who want a long and healthy life. The hiker/biker lane on the eastbound span, though, is a model of safety.

For one thing, the lane is separated from motor traffic by a low concrete wall. This isn't a typical highway bike lane, with only a four-inch painted line between fragile bicycles and hurtling tractor-trailers. A breakdown lane and a wall divides the human beings from speeding tons of steel. Your protection from motor traffic assured, you can turn your worries to the river, 55 feet below. Another low wall separates you from the drop into the Apalachicola, but this is topped by a high railing. You could still fall into the river if you heaved yourself up onto the wall and then climbed to the top of the railing, but I don't think that you could call it an accident.

The exact length depends on how you want to measure it, but the biker/hiker lane across the Apalachicola is about 1.6 miles long. This distance will probably inspire someone to think of staging an out-and-back 5K across the river, but forget it. The lane is quite narrow--"ordinary sidewalk width," the signs say--and eastbound runners would be sure to interfere with westbound runners. Because the Apalachicola River marks the boundary between the Eastern and Central Time Zones, it might be interesting to do a "Time Warp 3K," where the runners start on the east side of the bridge and finish before they started (according to local clocks) on the west side of the bridge. Or at least it would be interesting if there weren't a possibility of eastbound cyclists needing the lane at the same time as the westbound runners. Then it would be too interesting.

Best just to leave the biker/hiker lane as a safe way for the non-motorized to cross the Apalachicola River. For Florida Trail hikers, it's not much of a wilderness experience. But even the Appalachian Trail crosses the Little Tennessee River on the spine of Fontana Dam, which, as one of the largest concrete structures in the world, is hardly a woodland.

Extraordinary runs at fourth annual Missionette 5K & 10K

Bainbridge, Georgia's Kyle Harris eked out a late win at the Missionette 5K in Cairo, Georgia on Saturday, 15 May 2010, narrowly defeating Tallahassee Brian Corbin 18:10 to 18:12. Corbin was the top master in addition to being the runner-up in the race. The next runner over the line in the 5K was Kyle's younger brother, Chase Harris, at 20:16. Their mother, Julie Harris, was first woman and the top woman master, finishing seventh overall in 24:45. While the 5K seemed to be all about the Harrises, Angelina Horne of Pelham, Georgia won the 10K in 43:17. Chris Holt of Ochlocknee, Georgia was runner-up and top male at 46:40, and Tallahassee's Judy Alexander at third overall was the top woman master with a time of 47:58. Kurt LaRose of Tallahassee was the top male master, fourth overall in 49:20.

Kyle Harris had run the 10K at the 2009 Missionette Extraordinary races, finishing a distant second to Tallahassee legend Jessie Close, 36:13 to 38:55. This time around, Harris decided to try the shorter distance. He followed Corbin out onto the rolling 5K course, trailing at the mile and farther behind at two miles. Harris came back late in the race, though, and outkicked Corbin in the closing steps of the race.

Now in their fourth year, the Missionette Extraordinary runs benefit the Missionette girls' club of Cairo, Georgia. The course are both USATF certified and take the runners on a hilly tour of the country in and around Cairo.

The Lost Trail of Geddie Road

Back in the 1990s when I first got interested in Florida's Trailwalker program, I learned of the nature trail at the Division of Forestry's Tallahassee Forestry Center on Geddie Road. Strangely enough, the trail wasn't part of the Trailwalker program. The property that the Forestry Center sits on is hemmed in by Geddie Road, the CSX railway, and the Arvah Hopkins Power Plant, so there really isn't much room for a trail, but the Division of Foresty had managed to put together a loop that was a mile or two long. I walked it once or twice, noticing that the last part of the trail wasn't especially easy to follow. I figured this meant that the trail needed to be re-blazed. Actually, it probably meant to that the trail was already not being maintained. On more recent visits to the Forestry Center I didn't see the trail at all. I mentioned it to Bud, a Division of Forestry employee. He insisted the trail was there, and work had been done on it.

So I dropped by earlier today. Forestry had done a prescribed burn on the land recently, so there wasn't much underbrush. There also wasn't much sign of a trail. I checked out one path south into the woods that seemed to disappear. A second path turned out to be a firebreak. I returned to the first path, made some guesses as to where the trail might have been, and found a rustic wooden sign "WALKING TRAIL." The signpost wasn't quite vertical and was a bit charred, but there it was, the last remnant of the Forestry Center nature trail. Other than that, not even a blaze remained.

Trails vanish. Most famously, in 1958 the southernmost 21 miles of the Appalachian Trail was abandoned, from Oglethorpe Mountain to Springer Mountain. Very little if any of that stretch of trail exists today. Wandering off the Pine Mountain Trail in Roosevelt State Park (the prescribed distance for sanitary reasons), I've seen old blazes of some forgotten trail. Closer to home, a trail system near the Joe Budd Aquatic Center seems to be disappearing from neglect. And, of coure, the Forestry Center nature trail is gone.

There are still plenty of places to hike in the Lake Talquin State Forest. There are trails on the Fort Braden Tract and at Bear Creek, and foot traffic is also welcome on the Lines Tract cycling trails. Just across Geddie Road from the Tallahassee Forestry Center there are miles of roads through the Talquin Tract that you can run or walk on. But don't look for the nature trail at the Tallahassee Forestry Center, because it ain't there any more.
