Martinez puts on the jets at Race The Runway 5K

Michael Martinez and Austin ToddVenturing onto ground usually reserved for aircraft, over 200 runners stampeded over the 7,000-foot runway of Tallahassee Regional Airport on Saturday morning, 13 April 2013. By the time the runway was open to aviation again, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez had won the Race The Runway 5K, finishing the 3.1 miles in 18:36. Renee Cox of Tallahassee was the first female finisher, placing eighth overall in 21:03.

Early leaders. The race started and finished from the airport's North Ramp, from where the runners headed toward the north end of the runway. Jasen Fulghum went to the front, closely followed by Michael Martinez and Austin Todd, with the rest of the field stretched out behind the three leaders. By the end of the first mile, where the race reached the end of the runway, Fulghum had fallen off the pace, dropping out of contention. Martinez was in the lead now, with Todd in his wake. With their next 7,000 feet of running in clear view, Martinez and Todd started South.

Gabe HutchinsNearing the end of the long straightaway, Martinez opened a gap on Todd. By the time they reached the south end of the runway, Martinez was 12 seconds ahead and widening his lead as he headed back toward the north ramp and the finish line. In the end, the race was Martinez's, triumphing over Todd 18:36 to 19:06. Jasen Fulghum held on to third place, finishing in 19:25. Behind Fulghum, Gabe Hutchins and Reikan Lin had fought for position most of the race, but in the end it was Wakulla High's Hutchins who took fourth in 19:43, with Lin fifth in 20:08.

Renee Cox

Renee Cox led the women's field the entire race, and her 21:03 put her almost 200 meters ahead of women's runner-up Shannon Colavecchio. Colavecchio finished the race 12th overall in 21:55. Beth Culley was the third woman finisher and first woman master, placing 15th overall in 22:53.
