Childree and Smoot in close finishes at Justice In Motion 5K

It's not cross-country season, but runners from the Valdosta State University Blazers cross-country team dominated the Justice In Motion 5K road race in Valdosta, Georgia on 2 April 2011. Blazer sophomore Parker Childree edged out senior teammate Chris Rice for the win, 16:52 to 16:53, while Blazers took five of the first six places. If it had been a cross-country race, only the fifth-place finish of the Masked Avenger would have prevented the Blazers from scoring a perfect 15 points.


The Blazers didn't quite take the women's title, but a cross-country runner did. Mary Alice Smoot of Valwood, the 2010 GISA Region 3-2A cross-country champion, out-leaned VSU's Jordanne Helton for the win, both runners clocked in 20:45. Smoot had won the 'Dosta Dash 5K seven days earlier, making this her second 5K road win in as many weeks.


The fastest master in the race was Frank Ryan of Valdosta, who placed 19th overall in 22:38. Valdosta's Julia Baun ran 22:56 to capture top master woman honors, finishing 22nd overall.


The race started and finished near Valdosta's McKey Park. The Haven hosted the race; the organization provides emergency shelter and services for victims of sexual assault and family violence in nine Georgia counties around Valdosta.
