Michael Martinez has won some close races. As recently as 16 May 2015, Martinez won the Catfish Crawl 5K in Blountstown, Florida, by less than two seconds. But in Apalachicola, Florida, on Saturday morning, 10 October 2015, Martinez was on the losing end of a close race as James Terwilliger won the inaugural Brat Trot 5K in 17:43. Martinez was second in 17:49, the first master runner in the race. Nelson Dupere finished third in 18:25.Sally Dupere was the first woman in the Brat Trot, placing fourth overall in 19:32. Catherine Greenwell took second in the women's standings, finishing fifth overall in 20:38. Genee Heinke was the first woman master and third female finisher, coming in 13th overall in 22:59.
46 athletes finished the first-year race. The Brat Trot 5K was part of Apalachicola's second annual ApalachOktoberfest celebration.
