Abbey Griffin and Asa Swope were spectacular at the SportsPlex

Florida State University's Rec SportsPlex is located on the far west side of Tallahassee, Florida. Leon County Schools has held two middle school cross-country meets there--the Falcon Invitational in 2020 and the inaugural Mabry Invitational on Friday night, 1 October 2021. Deerlake's Abbey Griffin has won her race in both meets, most recently taking first in the Mabry Invite girls' 3K, running 12:13. Asa Swope isn't undefeated at the SportsPlex, but he still won the boys' 3K at the Mabry Invitational, going the distance in 11:10. Deerlake took first in the teams standings of the girls' 3K with 25 points; Montford was the top boys' team, scoring 39 points.

When the 2020 Falcon Invitational was at the FSU Rec SportsPlex, Leon County Schools athletic director Scott Hansen realized that the lighting at the facility would make a night meet possible. Acting on that idea, he added the 2021 Mabry Invitational to the 2021 middle school cross-country calendar, scheduling the meet for a 7:30 PM start at the SportsPlex.


That 7:30 race was the girls' 3K. In her four winning runs at Leon County Schools middle school cross-country meets, Abbey Griffin has established a pattern of close finishes. In her first win at the SportsPlex, the Falcon Invitational, Griffin beat Montford's Sophia Youngberg by inches, both runners clocked in 12:30. Griffin's first win of the 2021 season came at Montford's Mustang Stampede, where the eighth-grader squeaked by Annabelle Wiktorski of Montford, 11:55 to 11:56. The Falcon Invitational was likewise decided on the homestretch, with Griffin just ahead of Deerlake's London Mellen, 12:07 to 12:10.


And at the Mabry Invitational?


"Abbey got me in the last 400 meters," said Montford seventh-grader Annabelle Wiktorski, the runner-up.

It had still been close. Griffin ran 12:13, Wiktorski 12:14. Deerlake sixth-graders Honesty Daniel and Chloe Molen took the next two places, Daniel third in 12:47 and Molen fourth in 12:52.


Deerlake put two more runners in the top ten--Seventh-grader Chloe Houge placed seventh in 13:19 and eighth-grader Madeline Morris was tenth in 13:54. That gave the Deerlake girls 25 points and another Buck victory.


Montford and Wiktorski scored 35 points, taking second. Cobb edged the Raa girls for third, 101 to 105. Cobb's first finisher was seventh-grader Mallory Brown (12th, 14:37), Raa's was eighth-grader Kennedy Bell (8th, 13:32).

There were no close finishes for Asa Swope in the boys' 3K. In the sixth meet of the season, it was Swope's fifth race and his fourth win. Other runners led early, but by the end of the first kilometer the Swift Creek eighth-grader was ahead of everyone. Swope wasn't challenged after that and went on to win by over 100 meters in 11:10. Another Swift Creek eighth-grader, Kingsley Knispel, grabbed the runner-up spot with a 11:34. Fairview seventh-grader Jack Koon held off two Montford runners--seventh-grader Gavin Poucher and eighth-grader Matthew Hauser--to take third in 11:43. Poucher was fourth and Hauser fifth, both in 11:44.

Two more Montford athletes made the top ten, with seventh-grader Trent Parsons eighth in 11:59 and eighth-grader Jackson Beener ninth in 12:01. Once Montford eighth-grader Edward Bass was across the finish line thirteenth in 12:31, the Mustang boys had 39 points and first place, their fourth straight win.


Swope's Swift Creek Wolves were second with 58 points. Fairview and Jack Koon tallied 62 points to take third in the field of nine teams.


One meet, the seventh, is left in the 2021 Leon County Schools middle school cross-country season. That final event is the Leon County Schools League Championship at Apalachee Regional Park on Thursday, 7 October 2021. The girls' 3K will start at 6:00 PM with the boys' 3K following at 6:30 PM.

At the Fairgrounds Abbey Griffin and Asa Swope take prizes in the Falcon Invitational

The North Florida Fairgrounds in Tallahassee was an unfamiliar site for a Leon County middle school cross-country meet, but the winners were familiar enough. There, on Thursday, 23 September 2021, at the fourth annual Falcon Invitational, Deerlake eighth-grader Abbey Griffin won the girls' 3K for the second time in the 2021 season, running 12:07. Asa Swope picked up his fourth win in the boys' 3K, where the Swift Creek eighth-grader ran 11:05. The Deerlake girls scored 21 points for their fifth straight win of 2021, and the Montford boys won for the third week in a row, putting up 47 points.

In 2018, Fairview Middle School hosted the first Falcon Invitational at Phipps Park. The meet moved to the FSU Rec SportsPlex in 2020. The 2021 Invitational moved again, this time to a venue almost on the doorstep of Fairview--the North Florida Fairgrounds. It was a new location for Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country, and a new location for Tallahassee distance running in general. Two decades earlier the Tallahassee Turkey Trot had finished at the Fairgrounds, but no race had ever been run entirely on the property. At the fourth annual Falcon Invitational, the Fairgrounds was the scene of two races.


The first was the girls' 3K. The starting gun fired at 6:00 PM. After the first kilometer, Deerlake eighth-grader London Mellen led the race, followed by Montford seventh-grader Annabelle Wiktorski. Also wearing Deerlake green, sixth-grader Chloe Molen and eighth-grader Abbey Griffin were a few steps further back. Of the first four races of the season, Molen, Mellen, Griffin, and Wiktorski had each won one. At the Fairgrounds one of them could break that tie.

The leaders lost Molen during the second kilometer. Mellen still led with 500 meters to go, but Griffin had passed Wiktorski. Griffin grabbed the lead during the final 200 meters and charged for home, getting there first with a 12:07. Mellen was second in 12:11 and Wiktorski third in 12:12. Andi Vilardo, a Montford seventh-grader, placed fourth in 12:27.


The next three places belonged to Deerlake Bucks. Eighth-grader Kyra Swart was fifth in 12:41, Molen was sixth in 12:43, and sixth-grader Honesty Daniel was seventh in 12:46. Their fifth runner across the finish line, the Deerlake girls had 21 points and first place in a field of eight teams. It was the fifth win of the season for the girls in green.

Led by Wiktorski, Montford placed second in the teams standings with 39 points. Raa scored 99 points, taking third. Raa's top runner was eighth-grader Kennedy Bell, twelfth in 13:55.

The boys got their turn to race on the Fairgrounds at 6:30 PM. Swift Creek eighth-grader Asa Swope and Jonathan Kiros, a Deerlake seventh-grader, had split the first four races of the season, each winning two. At the Falcon Invitational, the fifth meet of 2021, they were sharing the lead after the first kilometer of the boys' 3K. By the two-kilometer mark, Swope had opened a gap. During the third kilometer the gap only grew wider, as Swope went on to win in 11:05. Fairview seventh-grader Jack Koon moved into third during that final kilometer and had started to close on Kiros, but the Deerlake seventh-grader held on to finish runner-up in 11:30. Koon was third in 11:31. Kingsley Knispel, a Swift Creek eighth-grader, placed fourth in 11:32.

Montford seventh-grader Gavin Poucher was fifth in 11:34. For perhaps the first time ever in a Leon County Schools middle school cross-country meet, ten schools had full teams in the boys' race. Led by Poucher's performance, Montford placed first among those ten teams, scoring 47 points. The other Mustang scorers were eighth-grader Matthew Hauser (8th, 11:44), seventh-grader Trent Parsons (10th, 11:58), and eighth-graders Jackson Beener (11th, 12:00) and Edward Bass (13th, 12:15).


Behind Swope and Knispel, Swift Creek was second with 59 points. Kiros and the Deerlake Bucks were a close third with 62. Scoring 78 points, Koon and host school Fairview placed fourth.

Leon County Schools middle school cross-country returns to the Florida State University Rec Sportplex on Friday evening, 1 October 2021, for the penultimate meet of the season. The League championship follows on Thursday, 7 October 2021, at Apalachee Regional Park.

Abbey Griffin and Asa Swope race like thoroughbreds at the Mustang Stampede

Abbey Griffin placed second in the girls' 3K at the 2020 Mustang Stampede Middle School Cross-Country Meet. Asa Swope finished fourth in the boys' 3K at the same meet. Both Griffin and Swope were back at Montford Middle School on Tuesday, 7 September 2021 for the ninth annual Mustand Stampede, the third meet of Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country season. Griffin, now an eighth-grader at Deerlake, won the girls' race this time around, running 11:55. Swope ran 11:02 to take first in the boys' event. The Deerlake girls successfully defended their team title, scoring a mathematically unbeatable 22 points. Racing on their home course, the Montford boys captured their first team win of 2021, putting up 45 points.

The humidity was high but cloudy skies had kept the temperature down when the girls' 3K started at 6:00 PM. After a kilometer of racing, London Mellen had the lead, closely followed by Kyra Swart, both Deerlake eighth-graders. Five days earlier, Mellen had won the girls' 3K at the Fort Braden Run, the second meet of the season. Swart had won the Mustang Stampede in 2021. Abbey Griffin was a few steps behind the two leaders when the race turned into the woods.


Coming out of the woods a kilometer later, Mellen was still leading and Griffin had moved into second. Swart had fallen back, replaced by two Montford seventh-graders--Annabelle Wiktorski and Andi Vilardo.


Griffin broke away on the homestretch. She looked back over her shoulder as she charged for the finish line, then looked again, but she made it there first in 11:55. Behind Griffin, Wiktorski was challenging Mellen for the runner-up spot. Wiktorski had the better kick that day and finished second in 11:56, while Mellen was third in 11:57. Vilardo finished fourth in 12:04.

The next three finishers were all Deerlake Bucks--sixth-grader Chloe Molen was fifth in 12:31, seventh-grader Kaia Ables was sixth in 12:35, and sixth-grader Honesty Daniel was seventh in 12:37. Once Daniel was safely home, the Bucks had 22 points and the first place in the eight-team field.


Led by Wiktorski, Montford was second with 40 points. Swift Creek placed third with 102 points; their top runner was eighth-grader Emily Bullough, fourteenth in 14:02.

Gavin Poucher, a Montford seventh-grader, was leading the boys' 3K at the end of the first kilometer. During the second kilometer, though, Asa Swope and Jonathan Kiros took over. Swope, a Swift Creek eighth-grader, and Kiros, a Deerlake seventh-grader, had tangled in the two earlier meets of the season, the ARPXC Invitational and the Fort Braden Run. Kiros had won their first match and Swope the second. At the Mustang Stampede, Swope made it two out of three, running away from Kiros late in the third kilometer to take first in 11:02. Kiros finished runner-up in 11:10. In a battle to the finish line, Nims seventh-grader Celestine Rwamptie edged Fairview seventh-grader Jack Koon for third, 11:12 to 11:13.

Montford's Poucher placed fifth in 11:20. He was only the first Mustang in the top ten--seventh-grader Trent Parsons was sixth in 11:35 and eighth-grader Edward Bass was tenth in 11:55, both wearing Montford maroon. Montford's remaining scorers were seventh-grader Parker Smith (11th, 12:03) and eighth-grader Matthew Hauser (13th, 12:07), giving the Mustangs 45 points and the boys' team title.


Swope and Swift Creek placed second with 69 points. Deerlake, led by Kiros, took third with 69 points. The Deerlake boys had won the first meet of the season and Swift Creek the second, but the third meet belonged to the Mustangs.

The fourth meet on the schedule of Leon County Schools' 2021 middle school cross-country season is the Everhart Invitational at Gretchen Everhart School on Wednesday morning, 15 September 2021. The season coninues with the Falcon Invitational at the North Florida Fairgrounds on 23 September 2021, the Mabry Invitational at the FSU Rec Sportsplex on 1 October 2021, and the LCS League Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park on 7 October 2021.

Abbey Griffin and Neal Porter fly right at the Falcon Invitational

Friday, 23 October 2020, was a day of close finishes at the third annual Falcon Invitational. At Florida State University' Rec SportsPlex that afternoon, both races were decided by less than a single second. Deerlake seventh-grader Abbey Griffin finished inches ahead of Montford eighth-grader Sophia Youngberg in the girls' 3K, winning 12:29.07 to 12:29.53. Neal Porter outkicked Danny Mauldin for the win in the boys' 3K, the Montford eighth-grader running 11:21.44 to the Deerlake eighth-grader's 11:22.19. The team competition was also tight, with the Montford girls scoring a winning 30 to Deerlake's 32, and the Deerlake boys put up 63 points to take first over Montford (65) and Fairview (67).

The FSU Rec SportsPlex, on the west side of Tallahassee, was a new venue for the LCS middle school cross-country circuit--the third time this season that the athletes had raced on a new course. It was in fact only the second time that anyone had raced at the site--the first time had been less than two weeks earlier, when Godby High hosted the Mabry Manor Invitational at the SportsPlex. The location may have been novel, but the girls' 3K race started out in a familiar fashion--with Deerlake seventh-grader Kyra Swart setting the pace. Swart had entered the race with a six-race winning streak in LCS competition going back to the 2019 season.


The streak ended. After leading through the first kilometer, Swart stumbled and fell during the second kilometer. The race was now between Abbey Griffin and Sophia Youngberg. Griffin and Youngberg fought for first during the third and final kilometer, leaving the rest of the field far behind. The fight continued down the homestretch and all the way to the finish line, where it was Griffin over Youngberg by less than half a second. Two more Deerlake athletes battled for third, with seventh-grader London Mellen edging sixth-grader Kaia Ables 12:58 to 12:59.


Mellen and Ables gave Deerlake three girls in the top ten, but Montford put all five of their scorers in the top ten. After Youngberg finished runner-up for the Mustangs, sixth-grader Adriena Vilardo was fifth in 13:02, sixth-grader Savannah Stanley was seventh in 13:29, sixth-grader Haley Heitmeyer was ninth in 13:39, and eighth-grader Ava Hill was tenth in 13:40. Montford had 30 points and their first win of the season, ending the Deerlake girls' winning streak at four meets.


Deerlake was a very close second with 32 points. Raa took third with 86 points. The first Raa finisher was seventh-grader Cecilia Veliz, eighth in 13:36.

Only Griffin and Youngberg had been in contention during the final kilometer of the girls' race. With a kilometer to go in the boys' 3K, four runners were still in the hunt for first. Montford's Neal Porter led, with three runners close behind--Deerlake eighth-grader Danny Mauldin, Swift Creek seventh-grader Asa Swope, and Fairview eighth-grader Xalimon Akbar.

Over the final kilometer Swope and Akbar fell back, but Mauldin moved up to challenge Porter, setting up a finish reminicent of the Killearn Invitational earlier in the season. The outcome was the same--Porter narrowly beat Mauldin to the finish line to take first. Swope was third in 11:34. Akbar held off a late charge by Deerlake sixth-grader Jonathan Kiros to take fourth, 11:42 to 11:43.


Deerlake eighth-grader Logan Peltier was ninth in 12:17, making it three Bucks in the top ten. eighth-graders Trevor Lord (20th, 12:52) and Josh Ryland de Kloet (27th, 13:07) finished the scoring for Deerlake, giving the Bucks 63 points and their fourth win in four outings this season.


Porter and the Montford Mustangs were second with 65. Led by Akbar, Fairview had their best showing of the 2020 season, placing third with 67 points.


Leon County Schools' 2020 middle school cross-country season concludes on Wednesday, 28 October 2020, with the LCS Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park. On the girls' side, the defending champs from 2019 are the Deerlake bucks. Fairview won the boys' title in 2019.
