Chris Cabret and Erin Phelps outrace hundreds at the 48th annual Springtime 10K

It wasn't the first Springtime Road Race.


The race on Saturday morning, 29 March 2025, was, in fact, Gulf Winds Track Club's 48th annual Springtime. But it was one of the largest of those 48, with more than 1800 athletes racing on the streets of Tallahassee, Florida in the Springtime 10K, 5K, or mile. And for the fastest athlete in the main event, the Springtime 10K, it was his first Springtime. Chris Cabret went 33:52 in his Springtime 10K debut, winning the race by more than 800 meters. Erin Phelps was the first woman in the race, coming in tenth overall in 38:23.

After the last of the athletes in the Springtime Kids' Mile has cleared the road, the Springtime 10K started on Suwannee Street just a couple of minutes after 8:00 AM. Chris Cabret was soon setting the pace for the 10K field; he had a lead of 100 meters at two kilometers and a 200-meter lead at three kilometers. Nate Kaiser, a seven-time veteran of the Springtime 10K, broke away from the rest of the pursuit, taking up a solo chase. But at six kilometers, Cabret was 400 meters ahead.

Cabret continued to widen the gap on his way back to Suwannee Street, where he crossed the finish line first in 33:52. Kaiser was the first master runner in the race, taking second in 37:00. It was his eighth top-ten performance at Springtime as well as his second runner-up finish in the race. Behind Kaiser, David Probst held off Kyle Olsen for third place, 37:10 to 37:13.


It was the first Springtime Road Race for Chris Cabret. It wasn't the first for Erin Phelps. Phelps had been racing the Springtime 10K since she was eleven years old. Back then, she was happy enough to crack an hour on the course. As a 25-year-old, her standards were higher in the 2025 Springtime.

Phelps led the women's field almost from the start; she was never challenged for that lead. She finished the race almost a kilometer ahead of the next woman in 38:23--a bit quicker than the 58:05 she had posted at the 2011 Springtime.


Gabriella Passidomo Smith took second in the women's standings, coming in 25th overall in 42:17. Melanie Leitman was the first woman master and the third female finisher, 52nd overall in 45:03.

Chris Cabret finished the first two kilometers of the Springtime 10K a hundred meters ahead of anyone else in the 10K field. But the Springtime 5K had started at the same time as the 10K, so the first athlete past the 2K mark was Hawthorne Hay. Hay ended up winning the shorter race by 400 meters, running 17:23. Amelia Bryant, the Springtime 5K women's champ in 2023, won the title again in 2025, placing twelfth overall in 21:39.

Davis Head took second behind Hay in 18:57. Matt McCloskey placed third overall in 19:09. Mike Martinez was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in seventh overall in 20:31.


Leona Higgins, a junior year cross-country runner at Klamath Union High, was second in the women's dvision and fifteenth overall in 22:22. Signe Ulsamer was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 22:49.

The Start

665 athletes finished the 2025 Springtime 10K; another 944 completed the 5K and 225 the kids' mile. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.


It wasn't the first Springtime Road Race. It shouldn't be the last.

Chris Cabret and Courtney Rouse score a Payne-full cross-country sweep for Team FTC

If there's any word that comes to mind when "prairie" is mentioned, it's "flat." Payne's Prairie is certainly flat. Located in Florida north of Micanopy and south of Gainesville, Payne's Prairie was created when its limestone foundation dissolved, collapsing the hills and leaving a broad, level area, sometimes lake and sometimes Savannah. And sometimes racecourse, at least once a year for the Trail Of Payne 10K cross-country race.


Don't think that because Payne's Prairie is flat, the Trail Of Payne course is easy. The terrain is rugged. At the ninth annual Trail Of Payne 10K, on Saturday morning, 23 March 2019, Chris Cabret ran the course in 36:10. It was nearly a minute off his best cross-country time, a 35:25 that Cabret ran at the 2016 NCAA-D2 Nationals as a frosh at Saint Leo University. 36:10 couldn't have been too disappointing a mark for the Team Florida Track Club runner, though, because it was fast enough for Cabret to win the Trail Of Payne by more than 150 meters. Likewise, another Team Florida Track Club member, Courtney Rouse, had run a 37:19.09 10K on the track, more than a bit faster than the 43:20 she managed at Payne's Prairie. Nevertheless, Rouse was the first woman in the 2019 Trail Of Payne, completing a Team FTC sweep and placing seventh overall.


John Sansalone of Gainesville finished runner-up for the second year in row, his 36:48 was three seconds faster than his 2018 time of 36:51. Thurman Lincoln, a senior on the Buchholz High cross-country team, took third in 39:39. Another Buchholz Bobcat, frosh Wrigley Longstreet, was fourth in 40:07. Dan Stoner of Team Florida Track Club had been either the second or third master runner in the race during each of the last three years, but in 2019 he was the Trail Of Payne's top master, placing fifth overall in 40:59.


Sarah Williams took second in the women's standings, placing 21st overall in 48:22. Another veteran of the Trail Of Payne, Williams had finished among the top ten women in both 2017 and 2018. Dr. Kristina Von Castel, a University of Florida nutrition professor, was the first woman master and third female finisher, 25th overall in 49:11.


227 athletes finished the 2019 Trail Of Payne 10K. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed the race.
