Summer Williams and Chris Porter ruled the Ranch at 2A District 2

Wakulla War EaglesFor cross-country, the Florida High School Activity Association's District 2 has existed in its current form since 2011. Since 2015, Wakulla High has hosted the Class 2A District Championship at 3Y Ranch, near Crawfordville. On Thursday morning, 25 October 2018, athletes returned to the Ranch for the fourth time for the 2A District 2 Meet. Florida State senior Summer Williams successfully defended her 2017 district title, winning the girls' 5K in 20:41. Rickards senior Chris Porter grabbed the title in the boys' 5K, running 17:13. Meanwhile, host school Wakulla swept the team titles, scoring 17 points in the girls' race and 33 points in the boys' race.


Summer Williams has raced all four District meets that Wakulla has hosted at the Ranch, placing fourth as a frosh and fifth as a sophomore before winning as a junior in the 2017 race. 2018 was her valedictory race at the Ranch and the senior graduated with honors, finishing more than 250 meters ahead of the runner-up in 20:41. Wakulla senior Alyssa Langston took second in 21:47, her third straight second-place showing at the 2A District 2 meet. India Sander-Nazario, a Florida State senior, placed third in 22:41. Sander-Nazario was also a veteran of the Ranch, taking fourth in 2016 and fifth in 2017.


Wakulla runners took the next two places after Sander-Nazario, with junior Diamond Cooper fourth in 22:56 and sophomore Tirzah Votaw fifth in 23:34. Frosh Elizabeth Blitch and sophomore Erica Odom finished the scoring for Wakulla, placing ninth in 24:14 and tenth in 24:18. That gave the War Eagles a near-perfect score of seventeen points and first place in the District. Suwannee scored 46 points to take second, led by their frosh ace Nellie Lamb (8th, 24:11).


The Wakulla team and the Suwannee team each qualified for the next round in the State Championship series, the 2A Region 1 meet, scheduled for Saturday morning, 3 November 2018, at New World Golf Course in Jacksonville, Florida. Summer Williams and India Sander-Nazario qualified as individuals, as did Godby frosh Anaya Thompson (6th, 23:45), Godby sophomore Amaya Jones (7th, 24:08), and Rickards sophomore Alejandra Vasquez (13th, 25:15).

In three years of racing at the Ranch, 17:13 was Chris Porter's best time on the course. More importantly, it was a winning time, putting him across the finish line 170 meters ahead of the next runner. It was also Wakulla junior Daniel Wiedeman's third District race at the Ranch, and Wiedeman cracked 18:00 on the course for the first time, placing second in 17:50. Wakulla juniors Mason McCord and Stephen Votaw took the next two places, finishing third in 18:16 and fourth in 18:18.


Wakulla final two scorers were sophomore Simon Cole, eleventh in 19:53, and frosh Logan Kilpatrick, eighteenth in 21:07. With that, the War Eagle boys had 33 points and the team title, making Wakulla 2A District 2 champions seven times in the past seven years, 2012-2018. Led by Porter, Rickards was second with 42 points. Suwannee placed third with 46 points, sparked by the fifth place, 18:52 performance of their senior, Ricardo Cruz-Marcelo.


Those top three teams--Wakulla, Rickards, and Suwannee--advance to the 2A Region 1 meet. Three individual athletes also qualified for Region--Florida State junior Morgan Castano (6th, 18:55), Godby sophomore Amarie Moore (12th, 20:47), and Florida State sophomore Jayden Farmer (15th, 20:55).

The Wakulla boys and the Community Christian girls prevail at the Panther Invitational

PanthersSome things are worth waiting for. The second annual Panther Invitational Cross-Country Meet couldn't be held as originally scheduled because Tallahassee, Florida was in the path of Hurricane Irma, but still took place seven days later on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017. Eight high schools brought athletes to the Southwood campus of Saint John Paul II Catholic High School to resume the storm-interrupted cross-country season. Wakulla scored a perfect fifteen points to win the boys' race, while Community Christian took the girls' team title with a score of 29.


Competition opened at 8:00 AM with the high school girls' 5K. Alyssa Langston, a Wakulla junior, won the race by nearly 300 meters, running 22:31. Community Christian athletes took the next two places, with junior Madison Crews second in 23:56 and eighth-grader Katherine Bouck third in 24:21. Community Christian had two more Charger girls in the top ten, frosh Karis Desotell was sixth in 24:58 and junior Maggie Gilbert was eighth in 25:20. Frosh Rachel Christian was eighteenth in 28:22, making it five across the line for Community Christian, giving the Chargers 29 points and first in the team standings. Wakulla was second with 40 points. Led by seventh-grader Sammi Drawdy, Aucilla Christian was third with 54 points.

There were no 300-meter leads in the boys' 5K. Wakulla junior Chris Porter edged Wakulla senior Scott Lloyd for first, both runners clocked in 18::17. Wakulla sophomore Daniel Wiedeman took third in 18:53.


Wakulla didn't just take the first three places, though. The next two places also belonged to the War Eagles, with senior Caleb Wiedeman fourth in 19:02 and sophomore Mason McCord fifth in 19:09. In fact, the first nine runners were from Wakulla, as the War Eagle boys racked up 15 points, the best possible score in cross-country. Led by junior Chris Robinson (11th, 20:20), Rickards was second in the six-team field with 52 points. Frosh Matthew Steen (14th, 20:32) was the first runner for Jefferson County and senior Kyle Moran (17th, 20:45) the first for John Paull II, but when the scores were tallied each of those two teams had 104 points. But John Paul II had the faster sixth runner, senior Jose Torres (37th, 25:14), so the Panthers were awarded third and Jefferson County fourth.


Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed and scored the second annual Panther Invitational.
