William Rodgers and Allie Brown show some heart at the Run For Your Lungs

William Rodgers won the sixth annual Run For Your Lungs 5K in 2016, but the Cordele, Georgia athlete was absent from the race in 2017. On Saturday morning, 3 November 2018, Rodgers was back Lake Blackshear Resort, just outside of Cordele, for the eighth annual Run For Your Lungs 5K. He was a winner once again, finishing nearly half a kilometer ahead of the next runner in 18:45. Crisp High sophomore cross-country runner Allie Brown captured the women's title, placing fourth overall in 22:22.


Garrison Slaughter, a seventh-grader on the Deerfield-Windsor middle school cross-country team, went 20:48 to finish runner-up in the 5K. Albany, Georgia's Michael Trammell was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 21:35.


Karen McNally of Albany was the first woman master and second female finisher in the race, coming in tenth overall in 23:22. Cordele master runner Ame Gibbs was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 23:58.


201 athletes finished the 2018 Run For Your Lungs 5K. Event Tech of Sylvester, Georgia timed the race. The ninth annual Run For Your Lungs 5K is scheduled for Saturday morning, 2 November 2019.

Rodgers and Dove rule the roads in the world's Watermelon Capital

Cordele, Georgia is the watermelon capital of the world.


Just about anyone from Cordele will tell you that. Who is to say they are wrong? Or right? Other cities may claim the title as well, but there isn't a United Nations commission to decide these things. In support of Cordele's right to watermelon capital status, watermelons are actually grown in the area (although most people drive by too quickly on Interstate 75 to see any of the melons). Cordele is also the home of Watermelon Capital Speedway, and the city celebrated its 68th annual Watermelon Festival in 2017. Cordele is also the home of the Watermelon Road Race.


The race has been contested at a variety of distances over the years, but on Saturday morning, 17 June 2017, the race was at five kilometer. Cordele's own William Rodgers won that 5K by over a minute, running 19:06. Juan Garcia of Cordele took second in 20:09. Cordele's Jerard Castro edged Aultman Hurt for third, 20:37 to 20:40.


Kimberly Dove of Byrom, Georgia took the women's title, placing sixth overall in 21:39. Hazlehurst, Georgia athlete Marie Ann Escobar, a rising senior on the cross-country team at Jeff Davis High School, was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 22:00. Vienna, Georgia's Caitlin Mixon, the 2016 Watermelon Race women's champion, was the third woman and ninth overall in 22:09.


Harold Benton of Leesburg, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race and the eighth male finisher, coming in eleventh overall in 22:36. Karen Stewart of Dawson, Georgia was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 15th overall in 26:00.


89 athletes finished Cordele's 2017 Watermelon Road Race.

A sunshiny day for Grant and Mixon at the Sunshine 5K

The fourth annual Sunshine 5K was run near Cordele, Georgia in Georgia Veterans State Park on Saturday morning, 6 May 2017. It's not overstating anything to say that Josh Grant won the race by, well, a lot. When the 26-year-old athlete from Arabi, Georgia finished the full five kilometers in 16:42, only two other runners had managed to make as far as four kilometers. In the women's competition, Caitlin Mixon of Vienna, Georgia wasn't quite that far ahead, but she was still successful in defending her 2016 women's title, finishing as the first woman and sixth overall in 24:44.


After Josh Grant, the next runners were the Omega, Georgia duo of Lorenzo Gomez, Jr., and Lorenzo Gomez. Lorenzo Gomez, Jr., finished runner-up in 20:27, while Lorenzo Gomez was the top master runner and third overall in 20:50.


Luisa Pineda of Tifton, Georgia was second to Caitlin Mixon in the women's standings and seventh overall in 25:44. Christina Jones grabbed the third women's spot, placing ninth overall in 27:21.


44 athletes finished the 2017 Sunshine 5K. The Sunshine 5K and fun run are hosted by Reflections Hospice as a fundraiser for the hospice's Camp Sunshine.

McCoy and Mixon master the Melon Run

If there is an official fruit of summer, it is the watermelon. Tomatoes have their fans, and there is nothing wrong with plums or a good peach, but none of these can match the popularity of watermelons. This popularity is reflected in the large number of Watermelon Runs you'll find on America's roads throughout the summer. I'm not saying that you won't find races dedicated to pumpkins, grapes, or apples. It's just that you'll find many, many more events that celebrate watermelon. Such races are scheduled in multiple towns in each state. Cordele, Georgia is one such town.


On Saturday morning, 18 June 2016, Hinesville, Georgia master runner Robert McCoy won Cordele's 2016 Watermelon Race by nearly 600 meters, covering the five kilometer course in 19:44. Rand McDonald, an eighth-grader on the Early County Middle School cross-country team, was second overall in 22:23. Bucky Thompson of Byromville, Georgia placed third in 23:02.


Vienna, Georgia distance runner Caitlin Mixon was the women's champ, finishing fourth overall in 24:02. Atlanta, Georgia's Whitney Conner was runner-up on the women's side and eighth overall in 27:02. Cordele's own Adrienne Worley was the third woman and ninth overall in 27:14. Dale Lawson of Cordele was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, tenth overall in 27:33.


59 athletes finished Cordele's 2016 Watermelon 5K.

Whitehead and Skiles run circles around the field at Loop-the-Lake

In 2015 Darton State College professor Patrick Whitehead started the month of May with a win at the Camilla, Georgia, Gnat Days 5K, just south of his home in Albany. Whitehead finished the racing month just north of Albany in Cordele, Georgia, with a win at the Loop-the-Lake 5K on Saturday morning, 30 May 2015. His winning time for the tour of Georgia Veterans State Park was 16:04. In the same race Brittney Skiles, the cross country coach at Georgia Southwestern University in Americus, won her third Loop-the-Lake women's title, placing fifth overall in 18:24. 273 athletes finished the race.


Whitehead finished well over 200 meters ahead of the next finisher, Wright Calhoun. Calhoun, a rising senior at Southland Academy in Americus, ran 16:53. Robert Bledsoe, a cross-country runner for South Georgia College, was third in 17:24. Arnoldo DeJesus of Albany's Good Life City Runners took fourth in 17:59. Dennis Moore was the top master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:08.


In 2008 Brittney Skiles became the first woman to break 20:00 in the Loop-the-Lake race, running 19:45. In 2014 she lowered that record to 19:23. But in 2015 Skiles became the only woman to ever go sub-19:00 in the Lake Blackshear classic, going 18:24. Katherine McGarr, a Crisp Academy graduating senior and the 2015 GISA State Cross Country champion, was second in the women's standings, placing 16th overall in 20:59. Allison Cauthen was the third female finisher, 21st overall in 22:05, and Southland Academy distance runner Ryleigh Bell was the fourth, 23rd overall in 22:07. Americus, Georgia, athlete Charlene Pennymon was the top woman master and the fifth female finisher, coming in 29th overall in 22:37.


Proceeds from the race went to benefit Graceway Recovery Residence. The race was timed by OnTime Results of Atlanta, Georgia.

Marley and Skiles knock the competition for a loop

David Marley doesn't always run the annual Loop-the-Lake 5K. But when he does, he wins.


Marley won the first Loop-the-Lake in 2006, then returned to take the title in each even-numbered year, setting the event record of 15:07 in 2012. 2014 was an even-numbered year, so Marley was back in Cordele, Georgia, on Saturday morning 1 June 2014 to attempt a fifth championship.


He didn't disappoint.


Marley, an Atlanta Track Club marathoner, blazed a 15:32, winning the eighth Loop-the-Lake by over 300 meters. Victor Chicas, a cross-country standout for Darton State College, was second in 16:40. 2013 Loop-the-Lake champion Wright Calhoun took third in 16:43. 2014 Gnat Days 5K winner Arnoldo De Jesus was fourth in 18:04, and Jared Hammond was fifth in 18:24. Ed Shattles was the fastest master runner in the race, taking sixth in 19:22.


Brittney Skiles didn't have as long a history at Loop-the-Lake as David Marley, but she had won the women's title at the race in 2008, setting a women's course record of 19:45. Skiles lowered that course record to 19:23 in the 2014 race, winning top women's honors at Loop-the-Lake for the second time. Skiles was seventh overall. Less than 100 meters behind Skiles was the women's runner-up, Southland Academy rising junior Chris Shattles, eighth overall in 19:45. Another Shattles, Trina Shattles, was the ninth female finisher and first woman master in the 2014 Loop-the-Lake, placing 37th overall in 24:14.


312 athletes were recorded crossing the finish line by Event Tech, the timing company for the 2014 Loop-the-Lake 5K. Despite the name of the event, the runners did not go entirely around Lake Blackshear, but still caught some beautiful views of the water as they ran through Georgia Veterans State Park.

Calhoun and Golden leg it at Loop-the-Lake

Wright Calhoun's freshman year track season at Americus, Georgia's Southlands Academy was a month behind him, but he showed that he still had some running in his legs on Saturday morning, 1 June 2013, at the Lake Blackshear Loop-the-Lake 5K. Calhoun ran 16:46 to win the seventh edition of the 3.1-mile race, leaving runner-up Robert Bledsoe over a minute behind. Bledsoe, the 2013 Fire Ant Festival 5K champion and just out of track season at Irwin County HS, ran 17:58. Tift County High School cross-country runner Joshua Curry took third in 18:24. Ed Shattles of Americus ran 18:53 to finish as the first master runner.


Tifton's Ashlee Golden showed that she's ready to start her own high school cross-country career this fall,  finishing as the first female in the Loop-the-Lake 5K. Golden placed 14th overall in 21:50. Just behind Golden, Paula Rogers of Eastman, Georgia was the next female finisher, 15th overall in 21:58. 18th across the line, Heidi Taylor was third in the division with a 22:28. Cherie McDonald of Sylvester, Georgia was the first master woman finisher, coming in 38th overall in 24:19.


336 athletes finished the race through the grounds of Georgia Veterans State Park outside of Cordele, Georgia. Proceeds from the race went to benefit Graceway Recovery Residence. The race was timed by Event Technical Services of Sylvester, Georgia.

Johnson's finishing sprint wins the Georgia Veterans sprint tri title

Making up a deficit of over half a minute, Charlie Johnson of Tallahassee's Gulf Winds Tri Club outkicked Lt. Col. Joel Kinnunen 57:18 to 57:22 for the title at the 13 August 2011 Georgia Veterans Sprint Triathlon in Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park near Cordele, Georgia. Tallahassee's Sandy Holt won the women's division in 66:47, nearly a minute ahead of the 67:31 mark of runner-up and top woman master Ronda Walker of Dublin, Georgia. The annual event consisted of a 400-meter swim followed by a 13.6-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run.


Johnson was only the sixth runner out of the water, but moved up to second place during the bicycle leg. But Colonel Kinnunen, a member of the USAF triathlon team, had the fastest ride of the morning, and dismounted his bike at 38:44 into the race, a full 37 seconds before Johnson stopped pedaling. To win, Johnson would have to make up the difference during the running leg. He did. Running a 17:29, Johnson chased down Kinnunen, eking out a four-second margin of victory.
