Charlotte Sikes and Emari Thomas improve to 3-0 at the Everhart Invitational

The Everhart Invitational isn't the perfect cross-country meet. More than half the course is on pavement. Run at midday, it's usually too warm and bright for comfortable racing. But on the positive side, it's probably the oldest middle school cross-country meet in the state of Florida, having been around since 1988. And the athletes get to miss a few classes to race, which most middle school students are not going to complain about.


Tallahassee's 36th annual Everhart Invitational may not have been perfect, but the record of the race winners was. After the meet, Swift Creek seventh-grader Charlotte Sikes was a perfect 3-0 for the Leon County Middle School Cross-Country season, having won the girls' 3K in 11:49. Fairview eighth-grader Emari Thomas was likewise 3-0 after winning the boys' 3K in 10:45. In the team standings, the Deerlake girls took first for the third time this season, this time with a winning score of 25 points. The boys from Raa were first in their event, scoring 35 points.

The girls raced first, their 3000-meter race starting at 11:00 AM. Charlotte Sikes set the early pace, shadowed by Deerlake eighth-grader Chloe Molen. Sikes broke away from Molen early in the second kilometer of the race. By the end of the second kilometer, Sikes had maintained her lead over Molen, but Deerlake seventh-grader Emma-Claire Tanenbaum had started to close on Molen. During the final kilometer, Tanenbaum overtook Molen and started to gain on Sikes.


Sikes, however, was too far ahead to be caught, and made it across the finish line first in 11:49. Tanenbaum took second in 11:55. Molen was third in 12:09.

Another Deerlake harrier, eighth-grader Honesty Daniel, placed fourth in 12:37. Deerlake's next two scorers were eighth-grader Madeline Brockmeier, seventh in 12:56, and seventh-grader Vujeong Lee, ninth in 13:09. With all five scorers in the top ten, the Bucks had a mathematically unbeatable 25 points and the Everhart Invitational title.

Sikes and the Swift Creek Wolves put up 50 points to take second. The Rams of Raa, led by seventh-grader Brixton Mendez (5th, 12:45), were third with 80 points.

At the season opener, the ARPXC Invitational, Emari Thomas won boys' 3K by less than five seconds. Two weeks later, at the Mustang Stampede, Thomas won the boys' race by less than three seconds. Another close race wasn't part of his plan at the Everhart Invitational, though. Thomas finished half a minute ahead of the second runner in the boys' 3K at Everhart, winning by a solid 150 meters.

Thomas was out ahead early in the race, and before the end of the first 800 meters he had broken contact with all challengers. After that it was a solo effort for the Fairview eighth-grader as he came home first in 10:45.


Late in the race, Raa eighth-grader Carson Weiss got away from Montford seventh-grader Jack Nottingham to take second in 11:19. Deerlake seventh-grader Jacob Hassell overtook Nottingham on the homestretch; at the finish line Hassell was third in 11:23 and Nottingham a close fourth in 11:24.


Behind Hassell and Nottingham, Raa seventh-grader Emerson Gandy placed fifth in 11:28. Two more Raa Rams broke into the top ten--eighth-grader Alden Weiss was eighth in 11:40 and seventh-grader Connor Cherry was ninth in 11:50. The fifth scorer for the Rams was the youngest, sixth-grader Fife Duncan, eleventh in 11:59. The Raa boys had 35 points and the team title, the first time since 2010 that the Rams took a team trophy home to Raa from Everhart. That 2010 team had been led by Wil Luca and Sukhi Khosla.


Nottingham and the Montford boys' squad, Everhart winners in 2021 and 2022, placed second in the 2023 meet with 46 points. Jacob Hassell and the Deerlake Bucks scored 67 points, taking third.


The Everhart Invitational was the third meet in Leon County Schools' 2023 middle school cross-country season. Three more meets remain in the schedule--the Fort Braden Run at Fort Braden Park on 20 September 2023, the FSU Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park on 30 September 2023, and the LCS League Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park on 6 October 2023.

Charlotte Sikes and Emari Thomas trot to victory at the Mustang Stampede

Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida's Big Bend region on 30 August 2023. Schools in Leon County were closed that day and the next, so that the second meet of the county's middle school cross-country season, the Fort Braden Run, had to be rescheduled for 20 September 2023. Tallahassee's middle school harriers were back in action the following week at the eleventh annual Mustang Stampede Cross-Country Meet at Montford Middle School on Tuesday evening, 5 September 2023. Swift Creek seventh-grader Charlotte Sikes won the girls' 3K at Montford for the second year in a row, but it was the Deerlake girls who took the team title, scoring a winning 28 points. Eighth-grader Emari Thomas of Fairview went 11:32 for the win in the boys' 3K, while the Raa boys were team champs at the Stampede for the first time in school history, scoring 42 points and beating Montford on a tiebreaker.

In the future, Montford Middle School may be able to use Leon County's Northeast Park and the Welaunee Greenway for cross-country running. Neither of those existed in 2023, however, so Montford hosted the Mustang Stampede on their excellent course on the school campus. Going into the Stampede, you'd have to say that Charlotte Sikes was the favorite in the girls' 3K. The Swift Creek athlete had gone undefeated in the 2022 Leon County Schools cross-country season, winning six races, and she had extended that winning streak to seven at the ARPXC Invitational, the opening meet of the 2023 campaign. Sikes made it eight in a row at the Stampede, finishing first in 12:00 with a lead of 120 meters. Deerlake eighth-grader Chloe Molen was runner-up in 12:29. Alexis Mayfield, a Swift Creek eighth-grader, edged Deerlake seventh-grader Emma-Claire Tanenbaum for third, 12:36 to 12:37.


After the first four athletes finished, Swift Creek was up two points on Deerlake. But if Sikes had been the individual favorite in the race, Deerlake was the team favorite with a winning streak that started in 2020. After Tanenbaum took fourth for the Bucks, Deerlake eighth-grader Honesty Daniel placed fifth in 13:25, Deerlake seventh-grader Yuejong Lee was eighth in 13:42, and Deerlake eighth-grader Allie Davenport was ninth in 13:45. Deerlake had all five scorers across the line before any other team had more than two. The Bucks also had 28 points and the team title.


Sikes and Swift Creek were second with 71 points. Raa, led by seventh-grader Brixton Hernandez (6th, 13:32), placed third with 71 points.

Eighth-grader Emari Thomas, Fairview's ace, had won a close race in the season opener at the ARPXC Invitational on 23 August 2023, finishing five seconds before Montford's Jack Nottingham. At the Mustang Stampede, Thomas won an even closer contest. This time he came out on top by just three seconds, beating the runner-up, Raa eighth-grader Carson Weiss, to the finish line 11:32 to 11:35. Just behind Weiss, Deerlake seventh-grader Jacob Hassell was third in 11:36, and Jack Nottingham fourth in 11:37.

Montford, racing on their home course, had three more athletes in the top ten--eighth-grader Johannes Hassell (8th, 12:16), sixth-grader Chase Sims (9th, 12:23), and sixth-grader Isaiah Renn (10th, 12:25). When Montford's eighth-grader Blake Swanson (11th, 12:29) had finished, the Mustang boys had 42 points. But Raa's scorers--Carson Weiss, seventh-grader Emerson Gandy (6th, 11:53), eighth-grader Alden Weiss (7th, 12:02), seventh-grader Connor Cherry (13th, 12:41), and sixth-grader Fife Duncan--put up and identical 42 points. The meet would be decided on a tiebreaker. In Leon County, the middle schools use the National Federation of High Schools rule for tie scores--the sixth runner determines the winner. Raa's sixth was seventh-grader Christian Acree, and Acree placed fifteenth in 12:44--just ahead of Montford's sixth, eighth-grader Jack Spicer, sixteenth in 12:53. With the faster sixth runner, Raa had won the meet.

Deerlake, led by Jacob Hassell, scored 67 points, placing third in the eight-team field.

Cadence Curnalia, Matthew Hauser win as Thomas County, Lincoln split the Yellow Jacket Invitational

Yellow JacketJust after dawn on Wednesday, 30 August 2023, Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida's Big Bend, moving inland into South Georgia. The next afternoon, Thursday, 31 August 2023, the high school cross-country runners of the region were back racing at the 30th annual Yellow Jacket Invitational in Thomasville, Georgia. Cadence Curnalia, a junior competing for host school Thomas County Central, won the girls' 5K by nearly 400 meters, running 21:36. Lee County took the team title with a nearly-unbeatable 32 points. Lincoln High sophomore Matthew Hauser took first in the boys' 5K, finishing with a lead of more than 200 meters in 16:40 and leading his Trojans to first place with a team score of 38.


The girls' 5K was the first high school race, with a start scheduled at 5:00 PM. Cadence Curnalia came into the Yellow Jacket Invitational with a record of winning--as a seventh-grader she had won the middle school girls' race in 2019, then repeated in 2020. In 2021, her frosh year at Thomas County Central, Curnalia had won the Invitational's high school girls' 5K. In 2022, she placed second in that race. Curnalia wasn't interested in finishing runner-up again in 2023.


She didn't. Curnalia crushed the field with a 21:36, her best mark yet at the Yellow Jacket Invite. Seminole County junior Geisha Smith took second at 23:08. Hadiya Ali, a Lee County sophomore, placed third in 23:20.


Ali was followed closely by her teammate Kali Nicholson, a junior who finished fourth in 23:26. Lee County's remaining scorers also cracked the top ten--junior Olivia Vanderwalt was sixth in 23:46, sophomore Harlee Oosterveen was ninth in 25:48, and sophomore Gabriella Vanderwalt was tenth in 26:09. With five athletes in the top ten, the Lee County girls' had 32 points--good for first place in a field of eleven teams.


Led by Curnalia, Thomas County Central took second with 99 points. Westover, winner of the girls' division in 2021, took third with 117. Westover's top finisher was Yaliza Wright, seventeenth in 26:49.

Curnalia's Yellow Jacket Invitational win was her second of the 2023 cross-country season; her first had been at the Sherwood Around The Cross Invitational twelve days earlier in Albany, Georgia. Matthew Hauser came into the Yellow Jacket still looking for his first cross-country win of 2023.


He got it. In his first Yellow Jacket Invite appearance, the Lincoln sophomore threw down a winning 16:40. Another sophomore, Jesus Gutierrez of Warner Robins Northside, grabbed second with a 17:24. Bainbridge senior Jahlae Sapp took third in 17:38.


Hauser wasn't the only Lincoln Trojan in the top ten. Senior Enijah Thomas was fifth in 18:13, frosh Trent Parsons was sixth in 18:19, and senior Mason Romuald was ninth in 18:57. Connor Aarons completed the scoring for Lincoln; the junior placed seventeenth in 19:28. With that, the Trojan boys had 38 points, putting them first among thirteen teams.


Gutierrez and the Northside Eagles put up 59 points for second. Crisp County placed third with 131, led by the fourth place, 18:02 showing of junior Sawyer McGinnis.

In Tallahassee, Florida, Fairview Middle School had been scheduled to race at the Fort Braden Run on the same day as the Yellow Jacket Invite. The Fort Braden meet ended up rescheduled for 20 September 2023 due to the hurricane, leaving Fairview eighth-grader Emari Thomas free to race in Thomasville. Race he did, winning the middle school boys' event by close to 200 meters in 12:47. Thomas County harriers took the next two places, with seventh-grader Holten Dennard second in 13:31 and eighth-grader Connor Stephens third in 14:04.


Thomasville Middle School Bulldog eighth-graders took the next two spots, with Conner D'Amico fourth in 14:41 and Jack Chastain fifth in 14:43. Two more Bulldogs also cracked the top ten--eighth-grader Mason Baggett was seventh in 15:00 and seventh-grader Luke Ridley eighth in 15:01. When the Bulldog's fifth scorer, seventh-grader Parks Everett, crossed the finish line twelfth in 15:37, Thomasville had 30 points and first place among eight teams.


Dennard and Thomas County were a close second with 38 points. The Whigham boys were third with 112 points; Whigham's first finisher was sixth-grader Luke Molisee, sixteenth in 16:04.

2023 was Jada Anderson's third year of running cross-country for Bainbridge Middle School, but it was her first appearance at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The eighth-grader made the most of it, winning the middle school girls' race in 15:58, the only sub-16:00 performance in that event since 2020. A few seconds back, Crisp County eighth-grader Mya Dunlap was runner-up in 16:05. Gracie Musgrove, a Brookwood seventh-grader, was the first hometown finisher, placing third in 16:33.


The race for first had come down to Bainbridge's Anderson and Crisp County's Dunlap; the fight for the girls' team title was likewise between Bainbridge and Crisp County. Bainbridge had a second athlete in the top ten when eighth-grader placed eighth in 17:08, but Crisp County answered by putting sixth-grader Mary Michael McGinnis across the finish line ninth in 17:14. The girls from Bainbridge completed their scoring with eighth-grader Carrington Smith (11th, 17:28), seventh-grader Ayesha Sapp (25th, 19:39), and sixth-grader Payson Huto (36th, 20:53). That gave Bainbridge 67 points and a narrow win.


Dunlap and the Crisp County girls were only three points back, second with 70. Thomasville was a close third at 77 points, led by eighth-grader Sadie Kate Scarbrough. Scarbrough was fourth in 16:41. Eight schools had complete teams in the middle school girls' race.


Miles And Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed and scored the races at the 2023 Yellow Jacket Invitational Cross-Country Meet.
