Jillian Candelino, Aidan Ryan, and Bolles repeat, repeat, repeat in Region 1 cross-country

If you were a fan of Florida high school cross-country examining the results of the 2022 2A Region 1 meet, you might have done a double-take. Weren't these the 2021 results?


Because all the winners were same and only the numbers had changed. Once again, the meet was at New World Golf Course on the west side of Jacksonville, but on Friday morning, 28 October 2022. Jillian Candelino of Bolles won the girls' 5K again, but this time it was her fourth straight Regional title, she was a senior, and her time was 17:42. The Bolles girls won the team competition again, this time with 27 points. Bolles' Aidan Ryan was first in the boys' 5K--but as a defending champion, as a senior, and in 15:46. The Bolles boys nabbed the team trophy, this time with a winning score of 33.


The girls raced first, their 5K starting at 8:00 AM. In what was likely her last high school race at New World, Jillian Candelino rolled through a 17:42--the fastest time ever run by a high school girl at the venue. Another Bolles senior, Ella Mickler, also cracked 18:00, taking second in 17:56. Bolles senior Elizabeth Csikai grabbed third with an 18:29. And as a reminder that there were other teams than Bolles on the course, North Bay Haven senior Charleen Elizando placed fourth in 18:55.


But the Bolles girls also took the fifth spot, with sophomore Estella Bruneau running 19:09. Bolles sophomore Elizabeth McClure finished the scoring for the Bulldogs, coming in sixteenth in 19:41. Once McClure was home, the Bulldogs had a mathematically unbeatable score of 27 and the Region 1 title. It was the thirteenth straight year that a Bolles girls team had won the Region.


Bishop Kenny scored 81 points to take second, led by their junio Emily Wheldon (12th, 19:34). The Jacksonville Episcopal girls were third with 86 points; their top runner was sophomore Lucrezia Gowdy (8th, 19:27). The top eight schools in the team standings qualified to race in the State Championship Meet; the remaining five qualifiers were NorthBay Haven (4th, 103 points), South Walton (5th, 125 points), Wakulla (6th, 220 points), Tocoi Creek (7th, 222 points), and Fernandina Beach (8th, 224 points).

The 2A boys' 5K was under way at 8:30. Aidan Ryan and Christopher Joost took the top two places for Bolles; senior Ryan winning in 15:46 and junior Joost finishing runner-up in 15:52. Wolfson junior Andrew Marello, another Jacksonville-area athlete, placed third in 16:02--just ahead of the the 16:04 posted by the fourth-place finisher, North Bay Haven senior Matthew Matson.


Bolles had two more Bulldogs in the top ten, with senior Andrew McGraw seventh in 16:16 and junior William Morales eighth in 16:28. Once Bulldog senior Matthew Thomas had crossed the line fifteenth in 16:54, the Bolles boys had 33 points, putting them at the top of the team standings for the eighth year in a row.


South Walton took second with 89 points, led by junior Jonah Krispel, fifth in 16:15. Bishop Kenny placed third with 98 points. The other five teams that qualified for State were West Florida (4th, 158 points), North Bay Haven (5th, 172 points), Eastside (6th, 185 points), Episcopal (7th, 202 points), and Suwannee (8th, 210 points).


The qualifiers advance to the final meeet of the post-season, the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 5 November 2022. The 2A girls 5K is scheduled for 8:15 AM ET and 2A boys' 5K for 9:05.

Led by Aidan Ryan and Jillian Candelino, Bolles sweeps 2A Region 1

Bolles wins. Again.


For the fourth year in a row, the Bolles Bulldogs won top team and individual honors, both boys and girls, at the FHSAA 2A Region 1 Cross-Country Meet. This time they did it in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, racing at the New World Sports Complex on Friday morning, 5 November 2021. The Bolles girls opened the meet by hammering the field with a 28-point score, while the Bulldog ace, junior Jillian Candelino, ran 18:07 to win the race for the third straight year. The boys followed, putting up a perfect fifteen points behind a 15:44 first-place showing by junior Aiden Ryan.


Candelino shrugged off the competition in the girls' 5K, her 18:07 put her close to 250 meters ahead of the rest of the field. The Bolles junior also won the Region 1 race her frosh and sophomore years. Jacksonville Episcopal frosh Lucrezia Gowdy took second in 19:04. Charleen Elizando, a junior at North Bay Haven, placed third in 19:10.


Bolles took the next two places, with Bulldog senior Hadley Ropp fourth in 19:15 and Bulldog frosh Elizabeth McClure fifth in 19:17. Junior Ella Mickler also placed in the top ten for Bolles, finishing seventh in 19:18. Frosh Estella Bruneau capped the scoring for the Bulldogs, coming in eleventh in 19:32. After her finish, the Bolles girls had 28 points and the school's twelfth straight 2A Region 1 cross-country title. Yes, the Bolles girls have won every Region meet since 2010.


North Bay Haven was second with 82 points. Bishop Kenny, led by junior Mary Biagini (12th, 19:34), placed third with 88 points. The top eight teams qualified for State, so Espiscopal (4th, 110 points), South Walton (5th, 111 points), Tocoi Creek (6th, 153 points), Florida State (7th, 192 points), and P. K. Yonge (8th, 224 points) each advanced to the Finals.

A team needs to take the first five places to score fifteen points, the best possible total in a cross-country meet. The Bolles boys didn't stop with the top five, though. The first seven runners in the boys' 5K were all Bulldogs, the pack led by Aiden Ryan. A junior, Ryan took first with a 15:44. And as stated, Bolles had the next six places as well. Senior William Brady was second in 16:05, senior Matthew McClure was third in 16:09, junior Mattew Thomas was fourth in 16:16, senior Colin Duhnoski was fifth in 16:23, junior Daniel De Monte was sixth in 16:32, and junior Andrew McGraw was seventh in 16:33.


It could have been a team time trial.


Bishop Kenny, led by the tenth-place 16:41 showing of senior Alex Jubran, was second in the team standings with 64 points. South Walton was third with 125 points behind their top runner, frosh Matthew Minton. Minton was twentieth in 17:26. The next five teams also qualified for the State Meet--West Florida (4th, 174 points), Eastside (5th, 192 points), North Bay Haven (6th, 193 points), Jacksonville Episcopal (7th, 216 points), and Suwannee (8th, 233 points).


Florida's high school cross-country season wraps up on Friday morning, 12 November 2021, with the State Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.

In cross-country, FHSAA 2A Region 1 still belongs to Bolles

In Florida high school cross-country, Regional Meets are the last round of competition before the State Championship. For athletes and teams that don't qualify at the Region, the season is over. Some harriers claim that their Region is especially difficult, or even the toughest in Florida, and call it the "Region of Death." I don't take any sides as to which, if any, Region deserves the "Region of Death" monikker, but 2A Region 1 could fairly be called the "Region of Bolles." Bolles School has won everything in that Region more often than not during the past six years. The 2A Region 1 Championship west of Jacksonville at New World Golf on 6 November 2020 was part of that streak.


The Bolles girls took the first seven places in their race, putting up a perfect fifteen-point winning score. It was the eleventh straight Region 1 win for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Jillian Candelino finished first for the second year in a row, this time going 18:25. The Bolles boys won for the sixth year in a row, scoring 28 points behind the first-place finish of Bulldog senior Cole Rutkowski, who ran 15:58.


First in the girls' 5K, Jillian Candelino was just a few steps ahead of the runner-up, her Bolles teammate Maxine Montoya. Sophomore Candelino and senior Montoya clocked 18:25 and 18:31. The pair had also taken the top two spots nine days earlier in the FHSAA 2A District 4 race, where Montoya had outrun Candelino 19:03 to 19:10. The Bulldogs didn't have to be concerned with relative positions, though, as they turned the Regional into what was effectively an intra-squad race, taking the first seven places. After Candelino and Montoya, the next five runners in Bolles colors were junior Madelyn Popp (3rd, 18:35), sophomore Ella Mickler (4th, 18:43), senior Layne Rivera (5th, 19:20), frosh Leila Bata (6th, 19;53), and junior Hadley Ropp (7th, 20:00).


The first runner that wasn't wearing orange and blue was South Walton sophomore Ava Flaherty, eighth in 20:11. Flaherty's finish led her team to a second-place score of 65. Bishop Kenny was third with 75 points; their top finisher was Kathryn Sanders, ninth in 20:13. Episcopal was fourth with 117 points, led by their ace frosh Hannah Kowkabany (12th, 20:35).


The top four teams--Bolles, South Walton, Bishop Kenny, and Episcopal--qualified for the State Meet. For the other schools in the field, the Region of Bolles was the Region of Death.

Bolles' Cole Rutkowski had placed runner-up to Bulldog teammate William Brady in the 2019 Region 1 boys' race, and he had finished behind teammates Colin Duhnoski and Matthew McClure in their previous race, the 2A District 4 boys' 5K. Brady wasn't at New World Golf for the Region 1 meet, but McClure and Duhnoski were. In the end, it didn't matter who showed up for the Regional, because Rutkowsi beat them all, running 15:58 and crossing the finish line with an 80-meter lead. Fernandina Beach senior Caden Kwiatkowski was second in 16:11. A few steps back, West Florida sophomore Luis Gutierrez edged Bolles junior Matthew McClure for third, 16:14 to 16:16. All five Bolles scorers cracked the top ten, with Rutkowski and McClure joined by junior Colin Duhnoski (8th, 16:45) and seniors Aidin Hasan (9th, 16:46) and William Camp (10th, 16:57). That gave the Bulldogs a winning score of 28 points.


Placing fifth in 16:22, Bishop Kenny senior Michael Teal was his team's first finisher. Bishop Kenny scored 82 points, taking second in the team standings. South Walton was third, scoring 114 points behind their top finisher, senior Cooper Blazer (17th, 17:31). With fourth place at stake, the final qualifying spot for State, Menendez scored 120 points to take fourth and advance, while Fernandina Beach scored 122 points to take fifth and end their season. Senior Ian Kelbert (12th, 17:07) was the first Menendez finisher; Fernandina Beach senior Steven Durr (6th, 16:28) led his team. Durr qualified for State as an individual, as did West Florida sophomore Luis Gutierrez (3rd, 16:14), Pensacola senior James Simkins (7th, 16:40), and Sante Fe junior Matthew Ortiz (14th, 17:16).


The Bolles, Bishop Kenny, South Walton, and Menendez teams advanced to State. The 2020 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship will be Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida with the 2A races scheduled for Friday morning, 13 November 2020.

2A Region 1 was all about Bolles

The 2A Region 1 Cross-Country Championship Meet in Lake City, Florida on Saturday morning, 2 November 2019 was all about Bolles School. The Bulldog harriers won the girls' title with a mathematically unbeatable 20 points and the boys' title with a similarly untouchable 25-point score. Bolles frosh Jillian Candelino was first in the girls' race in 19:39 and Bulldog sophomore William Brady took the boys' 5K with a 16:23.


Candelino wasn't unchallenged on the Oaks Equestrian Center course that morning. Leah Pelham, a Paxon senior, was close behind, crossing the finish line less than four seconds behind Candelino in 19:52. Bolles junior Layne Rivera was third in 19:52.

Candelino and Rivera were just the first in a lot of athletes wearing Bolles orange to cross the line in the top ten. Bulldog junior Maxine Montoya was fourth in 19:59. frosh Ella Mickler was fifth in 19:59, senior Helena Kummings was seventh in 20:00, frosh Elizabeth Csikai was eighth in 20:05, and senior Samantha Josephson was ninth in 20:05. With all seven of their runners in the top ten, the Bolles girls tallied 20 points and won the Region 1 title for the tenth year in a row.


Led by the tenth place, 20:30 performance of junior Anna Albertelli, Bishop Kenny was second with 72 points. South Walton was third with 97 points behind their top runner, junior Patasha Bryan. Bryan placed sixth overall in 20:00.


Region is the penultimate round of the state championship series in cross-country, followed only by the State Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 9 November 2019. The top eight schools qualified for State, so Bolles, Bishop Kenny, and South Walton were going. So were the girls from Episcopal (4th, 122), North Bay Haven (5th, 185), Sante Fe (6th, 244), Paxon (7th, 246), and Pensacola Catholic (8th, 249). For the remaining ten teams in the 1A Region 1 girls' field, the 2019 cross-country season was over.

In the boys' race, Bolles sophomore William Brady took first in 16:23. Bolles junior Cole Rutkowski was second in 16:29. Bolles sophomore Colin Duhnoski was third in 16:32.


Just in case you thought you were seeing a pattern, fourth place went to a Pensacola junior, James Simkins. Simkins ran 16:46.


But Bolles put two more athletes in the top ten--senior Daniel Fewell (9th, 17:17) and junior Aidin Hasan (10th, 17:27). So with only ten of the 136 runners in the race across the finish line, the boys from Bolles had already completed a team score of 25 points and won the 1A Region 1 title. For the fifth year in a row, the Bulldogs had the top team and the top runner in the 1A Region 1 boys' race.


Bishop Kenny junior Michael Teal took sixth in 16:46, leading his team to second place in the team standings with 93 points. Fernandina Beach was third with 136 points, behind their top runner, Caden Kwiatkowski (6th, 17:04). The remaining teams advancing to the State Meet were Menendez (4th, 186), South Walton (5th, 201), Episcopal (6th, 210), West Florida (7th, 217), and Pensacola (8th, 222).
