On to State! Maclay harriers Caroline Couch and David Barton win 1A Region 1

On Friday morning, 10 November 2023, Pensacola Christian Academy won both the girls' and boys' team titles at the FHSAA 1A Region 1 Cross-Country Championships at New World Golf in Jacksonville, Florida. It was the second year in a row that the Warriors had won both races. Maclay had the top individual in each of the two races, with sophomore Caroline Couch posting a winning time of 18:17 in the girls' 5K and frosh David Barton taking first in 16:18 in the boys' 5K.


The girls' 5K opened 1A competition at New World Golf that morning, starting at 8:30 AM. RaeAnne Tutton, Pensacola Christian senior and two-time defending Region champ, was on the starting line. So was Pensacola Christian sophomore Jaimee Tutton, who had finished runner-up in the Region in 2021 and 2022. Caroline Couch of Maclay had finished well behind the Tuttons in the 2022 race, but 2023 was a new year and a new Regional championship--with a new Regional champion. Couch surged ahead of the Tuttons late in the race, winning in 18:17. RaeAnne Tutton was a close second in 18:19, with Jaimee Tutton right behind, also in 18:19.


Pensacola Christian took the next three places, with sophomore Reagan Smith fourth in 18:26, sophomore Sofia Peterlevitz fifth in 20:01, and seventh-grader Clara Goncalves sixth in 20:01. With five of the top six runners, the Warriors had a mathematically unbeatable 20 points, winning the Region 1 team title for the second year in a row.


Led by Region 1 champ Caroline Couch, the Maclay girls placed second in the team standings with 52 points. Providence was third with 80 points behind their top harrier, seventh-grader Emma Akhundjanov, who was tenth in 20:16. Five more teams also qualified for the State Championship Meet--Saint Johns Country Day (4th, 130), Harvest Community (5th, 192), Christs Church (6th, 201), Port Saint Joe (7th, 208), and Freeport (8th, 216).

Ten days before the 1A Region 1 meet, David Barton of Maclay won the boys' 5K at the 1A District 2 Championship in Tallahassee. After the race, he answered a question about the competition in the upcoming Regional.


"Pensacola Christian Academy has a guy who runs 16:18," said Barton. "So I hope to go hard with him and win that race."


Barton himself went 16:18 at Region, but no Pensacola Christian athletes were near him when he crossed the finish line, the Region 1 champ by 70 meters. Pensacola Christian senior Andrew Sheppard took the runner-up spot with a 16:32. Dominic Litchfield, a Pensacola Christian junior, was third in 16:37.


Walker White of Providence took fourth, running 16:40. Pensacola Christian had a third athlete in the top ten, frosh Jed Fears, sixth in 16:49, but Providence put four in the top ten--White, junior Ellis Halton (8th, 17:07), junior Donovan Drake (9th, 17:19), and sophomore Harrison Kozlowski (10th, 17:20). Two young Warriors, eighth-grader Carson Ohman (13th, 17:22) and frosh Walter Goncalves (17th, 17:38), finished the scoring for Pensacola Christian, giving their team 41 points and first place in the Region. Providence was only a point away, taking second with 42 points.


Led by Barton, Maclay put up 82 points to place third, qualifying for the State Championship with Pensacola Christian and Providence. Five more teams advanced to State--Community Christian (4th, 106), Saint Joseph (5th, 165), Rocky Bayou Christian (6th, 199), Saint Johns Country Day (7th, 217), and Blountstown (8th, 235). The FHSAA State Championship Cross-Country Meet is scheduled for Friday, 17 November 2023, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida, with the 1A girls racing at 7:45 AM and the 1A boys at 8:35 AM.

Harriers RaeAnne Tutton and Drew Birx win as Pensacola Christian sweeps 1A Region 1

Each year, the top class 1A high school harriers gather at the Region 1 meet to determine who deserves to compete in the State Championship. This year, the Regional test was in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday morning, 28 October 2022, and eight girls' teams and eight boys' teams would advance. On the girls' side, the best team was the squad from Pensacola Christian, putting up a winning score of 28 points. Pensacola Christian Warrior junior RaeAnne Tutton edged teammate Jaimee Tutton for the individual title, both runners clocked in 18:39. The Pensacola Christian boys won their race as well, scoring a mathematically unbeatable 27 points behind the first-place finish of their senior ace, Drew Birx. Birx cruised the 5K course in 16:19.


The girls' 5K was scheduled for 9:00 AM. By the end of the race the two Tuttons--junior RaeAnne and frosh Jaimee--were well ahead of the rest of the field, as they raced (as they had all season) within a step of each other. Leading everyone else by nearly a hundred meters, RaeAnne and Jaimee crossed the finish line one-two, both in 18:39 with RaeAnne slightly ahead. It was the same finish as in the 2021 Region 1 meet, where the Tuttons had taken first and second in 18:54. Behind the two Tuttons, Maclay junior Susan Koeppel took third in 19:02.


Maclay, the defending Region 1 champs, put three more athletes in the top ten--frosh Lillian Koeppel (5th, 19:16), frosh Caroline Couch (6th, 19:19) and sophomore Kassidy Moninger (8th, 20:02). But Pensacola Christian also had four in the top ten--RaeAnne Tutton, Jaimee Tutton, frosh Reagan Smith (4th, 19:08), and senior Jessica Chappell (7th, 19:46). Maclay's fifth scorer, sophomore Payton Thumm, was across the finish line twelfth in 20:35, giving the Marauders 33 points. The fifth Warrior had to score less than nineteen points to get Pensacola Christian the win.


She did. Pensacola Christian's number five, frosh Karissa Keyser, raced home fifteenth in 20:43, scoring fourteen points and giving her team a winning total of 28. Maclay was a close second with 33. Providence, led by sixth-grader Emma Akhundjanov (13th, 20:38), placed third with 88 points.


The other five teams that advanced to the State Final were Baker (4th, 154 points), Saint Johns Country Day (5th, 182 points), Paxton (6th, 187 points), Community Christian (7th, 189 points), and Port Saint Joe (8th, 197 points).

The boys raced at 9:30 AM ET. Pensacola Christian senior Drew Birx had finished fifth in the Region in 2021, but this Warrior was determined to end his career a winner. Coming off a win eight days earlier in the 1A District 1 Meet, Birx finished the race at New World Golf first in 16:19, nearly 80 meters ahead of the next runner. Another Pensacola Christian Warrior, junior Andrew Sheppard, was second in 16:33. Warrior senior Micah Sleeth was third in 16:45. The parade of Warriors was finally interrupted by Christ's Church seventh-grader Tyson Manley, fourth in 16:48.


Pensacola Christian sophomore Dominic Litchfield also broke into the top ten, placing eighth in 17:15. Eighth-grader Jed Fears completed the Warriors' score, taking twelfth in 17:30. The Pensacola Christian boys had 26 points and the Region 1 title for the second year in a row.


The Providence boys took second with 101 points, led by frosh Walker White, fifth in 16:56. Tallahassee Community Christian placed third with 124 points; their top runner was junior Carson Freeland, eighteenth in 17:43. The remaining five teams that qualified for State were Blountstown (4th, 152 points), Maclay (5th, 157 points), Milton Central (6th, 225 points), Saint Joseph (7th, 226 points), and Jacksonville Trinity Christian (8th, 249 points).


The top eight teams in each race earned the right to advance to the State Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 5 November 2022. The 1A girls' 5K is the first race of the morning, scheduled for 7:50 AM ET. The 1A boys compete at 8:40.

Jillian Candelino, Aidan Ryan, and Bolles repeat, repeat, repeat in Region 1 cross-country

If you were a fan of Florida high school cross-country examining the results of the 2022 2A Region 1 meet, you might have done a double-take. Weren't these the 2021 results?


Because all the winners were same and only the numbers had changed. Once again, the meet was at New World Golf Course on the west side of Jacksonville, but on Friday morning, 28 October 2022. Jillian Candelino of Bolles won the girls' 5K again, but this time it was her fourth straight Regional title, she was a senior, and her time was 17:42. The Bolles girls won the team competition again, this time with 27 points. Bolles' Aidan Ryan was first in the boys' 5K--but as a defending champion, as a senior, and in 15:46. The Bolles boys nabbed the team trophy, this time with a winning score of 33.


The girls raced first, their 5K starting at 8:00 AM. In what was likely her last high school race at New World, Jillian Candelino rolled through a 17:42--the fastest time ever run by a high school girl at the venue. Another Bolles senior, Ella Mickler, also cracked 18:00, taking second in 17:56. Bolles senior Elizabeth Csikai grabbed third with an 18:29. And as a reminder that there were other teams than Bolles on the course, North Bay Haven senior Charleen Elizando placed fourth in 18:55.


But the Bolles girls also took the fifth spot, with sophomore Estella Bruneau running 19:09. Bolles sophomore Elizabeth McClure finished the scoring for the Bulldogs, coming in sixteenth in 19:41. Once McClure was home, the Bulldogs had a mathematically unbeatable score of 27 and the Region 1 title. It was the thirteenth straight year that a Bolles girls team had won the Region.


Bishop Kenny scored 81 points to take second, led by their junio Emily Wheldon (12th, 19:34). The Jacksonville Episcopal girls were third with 86 points; their top runner was sophomore Lucrezia Gowdy (8th, 19:27). The top eight schools in the team standings qualified to race in the State Championship Meet; the remaining five qualifiers were NorthBay Haven (4th, 103 points), South Walton (5th, 125 points), Wakulla (6th, 220 points), Tocoi Creek (7th, 222 points), and Fernandina Beach (8th, 224 points).

The 2A boys' 5K was under way at 8:30. Aidan Ryan and Christopher Joost took the top two places for Bolles; senior Ryan winning in 15:46 and junior Joost finishing runner-up in 15:52. Wolfson junior Andrew Marello, another Jacksonville-area athlete, placed third in 16:02--just ahead of the the 16:04 posted by the fourth-place finisher, North Bay Haven senior Matthew Matson.


Bolles had two more Bulldogs in the top ten, with senior Andrew McGraw seventh in 16:16 and junior William Morales eighth in 16:28. Once Bulldog senior Matthew Thomas had crossed the line fifteenth in 16:54, the Bolles boys had 33 points, putting them at the top of the team standings for the eighth year in a row.


South Walton took second with 89 points, led by junior Jonah Krispel, fifth in 16:15. Bishop Kenny placed third with 98 points. The other five teams that qualified for State were West Florida (4th, 158 points), North Bay Haven (5th, 172 points), Eastside (6th, 185 points), Episcopal (7th, 202 points), and Suwannee (8th, 210 points).


The qualifiers advance to the final meeet of the post-season, the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 5 November 2022. The 2A girls 5K is scheduled for 8:15 AM ET and 2A boys' 5K for 9:05.

Led by Aidan Ryan and Jillian Candelino, Bolles sweeps 2A Region 1

Bolles wins. Again.


For the fourth year in a row, the Bolles Bulldogs won top team and individual honors, both boys and girls, at the FHSAA 2A Region 1 Cross-Country Meet. This time they did it in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, racing at the New World Sports Complex on Friday morning, 5 November 2021. The Bolles girls opened the meet by hammering the field with a 28-point score, while the Bulldog ace, junior Jillian Candelino, ran 18:07 to win the race for the third straight year. The boys followed, putting up a perfect fifteen points behind a 15:44 first-place showing by junior Aiden Ryan.


Candelino shrugged off the competition in the girls' 5K, her 18:07 put her close to 250 meters ahead of the rest of the field. The Bolles junior also won the Region 1 race her frosh and sophomore years. Jacksonville Episcopal frosh Lucrezia Gowdy took second in 19:04. Charleen Elizando, a junior at North Bay Haven, placed third in 19:10.


Bolles took the next two places, with Bulldog senior Hadley Ropp fourth in 19:15 and Bulldog frosh Elizabeth McClure fifth in 19:17. Junior Ella Mickler also placed in the top ten for Bolles, finishing seventh in 19:18. Frosh Estella Bruneau capped the scoring for the Bulldogs, coming in eleventh in 19:32. After her finish, the Bolles girls had 28 points and the school's twelfth straight 2A Region 1 cross-country title. Yes, the Bolles girls have won every Region meet since 2010.


North Bay Haven was second with 82 points. Bishop Kenny, led by junior Mary Biagini (12th, 19:34), placed third with 88 points. The top eight teams qualified for State, so Espiscopal (4th, 110 points), South Walton (5th, 111 points), Tocoi Creek (6th, 153 points), Florida State (7th, 192 points), and P. K. Yonge (8th, 224 points) each advanced to the Finals.

A team needs to take the first five places to score fifteen points, the best possible total in a cross-country meet. The Bolles boys didn't stop with the top five, though. The first seven runners in the boys' 5K were all Bulldogs, the pack led by Aiden Ryan. A junior, Ryan took first with a 15:44. And as stated, Bolles had the next six places as well. Senior William Brady was second in 16:05, senior Matthew McClure was third in 16:09, junior Mattew Thomas was fourth in 16:16, senior Colin Duhnoski was fifth in 16:23, junior Daniel De Monte was sixth in 16:32, and junior Andrew McGraw was seventh in 16:33.


It could have been a team time trial.


Bishop Kenny, led by the tenth-place 16:41 showing of senior Alex Jubran, was second in the team standings with 64 points. South Walton was third with 125 points behind their top runner, frosh Matthew Minton. Minton was twentieth in 17:26. The next five teams also qualified for the State Meet--West Florida (4th, 174 points), Eastside (5th, 192 points), North Bay Haven (6th, 193 points), Jacksonville Episcopal (7th, 216 points), and Suwannee (8th, 233 points).


Florida's high school cross-country season wraps up on Friday morning, 12 November 2021, with the State Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.

A winning start to the season for Patrick Koon and Kate Drummond at Cecil Field

New World Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida probably was a swamp at one time. The ground has the spongy feeling of land that remembers long years of never being quite dry. During World War II, the land became part of Cecil Field Naval Air Station. In 1975 Fiddler's Green, an eighteen-hole golf course, was built. New owners renamed the site New World Golf Course, then added disc golf in 2015. high school cross-country arrived in 2017 as the Cecil Field Pre-Season Classic, thanks to Bishop Snyder coach Richard Fannin. On Friday evening, 27 August 2021, the meet moved into the regular season and became the Cecil Field Summer Classic.


Over 1600 athletes crossed a finish line in the races at the 2021 Classic, including 196 in the high school girls' elite 5K. Of those nearly 200, the first was Buchholz junior Kate Drummond, who won the race by 70 meters in 18:39. Leon sophomore Patrick Koon was first among 228 finishers in high school boys' elite 5K, cruising the course in a course and meet record 15:15.

The girls' elite race started promptly at 7:15 PM. A flurry of athletes with more optimism than judgment set the early pace. Two kilometers into the race, fatigue had cleared them away and Zoe Pustilnik, a Spanish River senior, was leading. Kate Drummond was just off Pustilnik's right shoulder.


During the third kilometer, Drummond took over, opening a three-second gap. The gap grew. With 600 meters to go, Drummond was ten seconds ahead of the next runner, Timber Creek senior Amber Schulz. Pustilnik was a few steps back in third. Those positions held till the finish line, where Drummond was first in 18:39. It was her first high school cross-country win. Schulz was runner-up in 18:55. Pustilnik held off Episcopal frosh Lucrezia Gowdy to take third, both runners clocked in 19:02.

In the team standings, Bolles was first in the field of twenty schools, led by the seventh-place finish of Bulldog junior Elizabeth Csikai. Csikai ran 19:17. Bolles remaining scorers were frosh Elizabeth McClure (14th, 19:42), forsh Estella Bruneau (20th, 19:53), senior Maddie Popp (24th, 20:03), and sophomore Leila Bata (31st, 20:11). Those five gave the Bulldogs 93 points and the win. Drummond's Buchholz Bobcats were second with 128 points. Leon High, led by Lion junior Lily Moore (5th, 19:09), scored 139 points to take third.

With daylight fading from clouds and sunset, the high school boys' elite 5K got underway at 7:45 PM. 400 meters from the starting line, Patrick Koon took the lead. Nick Carpenter, a Trinity Prep senior, tucked in behind Koon. Carpenter remained a step behind in Koon's wake through two kilometers, but Koon began to pull away during the third kilometer. With 600 meters to go, Koon was 15 seconds ahead.

Meanwhile, Matthew Stratton, a Saint Johns Country Day senior, had caught up with Carpenter. Fighting for second, Carpenter and Stratton began to eat into Koon's lead. As the finish line approached, Stratton left Carpenter behind and charged after Koon.


But the Leon sophomore was too far ahead. Koon made it to the finish line in 15:15, five seconds ahead of Stratton's 15:20. Both runners under the previous course record. Carpenter nabbed third in 15:26.


Viera senior Michael Toppi nabbed fourth in 15:38. Toppi was one of two Viera athletes in the top ten, the other was junior Cameron Raney, tenth in 15:59. Viera's remaining scorers were senior Robbie Naberhaus (12th, 16:05), junior Aedan Rendeck (27th, 16:44), and frosh Jack Girard (37th, 16:54), givng the Hawks 80 points and first place among 22 teams. Led by the fifth place finish Satellite took second with 98 points, led by senior Justin Wilson, fifth in 15:44. Bolles was third, scoring 103 points behind the top Bulldog, senior William Brady. Brady was eighth in 15:58.

Before the elite races, the girls' varsity 5K and the boys' varsity 5K had the course. A light rain fell during the girls' varsity race. By two kilometers Oakleaf junior Sierra Barrera had moved up through the field to take the lead. During the third kilometer, Rockedge sophomore Malinda Underwood and Fletcher frosh Tessa Massa moved up four places and pulled even with Barrera. The rest of the race was Barrera, Massa, and Underwood fighting for first, farther and farther ahead of the rest of the field. It came down to the final kick. Underwood edged Barrera for the win, both running 20:19, with Massa a hair behind in 202:20.

It was a Bulldog vs. Bulldog battle in the team standings, with the Bolles Bulldogs and the Melbourne Bulldogs fighting for first. Bolles had no runners in the top ten, but scorers Kavya Patel (13th, 22:00), Kate Mark (20th, 22:25), Emily Loftin (27th, 22:40), Sofia Petrucelli (29th, 22:44), and Lilly Lenger (36th, 23:19) gave their team 109 points. However, Melbourne also had 109 points, thanks to Caroline Bergstrom (7th, 21:33), Aubrey Orcutt (15th, 22:05), Katelyn Apotsos (26th, 22:38), Mehek Niwas (34th, 22:59), and Emma Hanus (43rd, 23:31). Under NFHS rules, a tie score is resolved by comparing the sixth runner on each team--"the team with the best sixth-place finisher shall prevail." In this case, the best sixth-place finsher was Bolles eighth-grader Katherine Libby who placed 41st in 23:30, giving her team first place. Stanton, led by senior Alexandria Richmond (5th, 21:27), was third with 174 points.

James Snipes, a Ridgeview senior, was the early leader of the boys' varsity 5K. He was shadowed for more than three kilometers by Rockledge junior Josiah Price. When Price faded another Rockledge junior, Christian Calderon, took over the pursuit. Calderon couldn't catch Snipes, either. Snipes expanded his lead over the final kilometer to win the race in 16:47. Calderon was second in 16:59. Mandarin junior Gavin Nelson was third in 17:17.

Joining Nelson were Mandarin's other four scorers-sophomore Dominic Geraci (15th, 17:51), senior Max Dedrick (17th, 17:52), junior Casey King (20th, 18:14), and senior Jacob Chattin (41st, 18:53). Those five gave Mandarin 96 points, good for first place in a field of 32 teams. Creekside edged Niceville for second 188 to 189, just ahead of fourth-place Bolles' 190 points. Creekside's top runner was frosh Bill Foulk, eleventh in 17:40; Niceville's first scorer was sophopmore Alexander Buena, seventh in 17:28.

Laci Watford and Matthew Stratton win at 1A Region 1, but Maclay sweeps team honors

When the athletes of FHSAA 1A Region 1 met at New World Golf in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday morning, 6 November 2020, it was Laci Watford, the University Christian junior, who won the girl's 5K, running 18:40. Another junior, Matthew Stratton of Saint Johns Country Day, won the boys' 5K with a 15:53. But it was the harriers from Maclay who swept the team titles, taking first in the girls' race with 49 points and first in the boys' race with 36 points.


Runner-up in the 2018 and 2019 Region 1 races, Watford's winning 18:40 in the 2020 event put her across the finish line a minute before the next runner. Kaylin Olivarez, a Baker eighth-grader, placed runner-up in 19:40. Maclay frosh Susan Koeppel came in third with a 19:49.


After Susan Koeppel, Maclay had seventh-grader Lillian Koeppel take ninth in 20:43. The remaining three Marauder scorers were Maclay frosh Natalie Hammett (11th, 20:46), eighth-grader Payton Thumm (15th, 21:56), and seventh-grader Nishi Bhanderi (16th, 21:28). Those five athletes combined for Maclay's winning score of 49. In the past seven years, the Maclay girls have won seven Region 1 team titles.


Pensacola Christian was second in the region with 66 points, led by frosh Rae Anne Tutton and seventh-grader Jaimee Tutton. Rae Anne Tutton finished fourth in 20:08, Jaimee Tutton was fifth in 20:08. Community Christian placed third with 92 points; the Tallahassee school's first runner was junior Morgan Wilson, seventh in 20:34. Providence, the last school to win the Region before the Maclay streak began, took fourth in the 2020 meet with 98 points. Providence was led by frosh Lindy White, who placed sixth in 20:25.


The top four schools--Maclay, Pensacola Christian, Community Christian, and Providence--qualified for the State Championship Meet.

Undefeated in the month of October, Matthew Stratton's 15:53 win in the 1A Region 1 boys' 5K gave the Saint Johns Country Day junior a four-race winning streak. The Maclay Marauders took the next two places, with junior Jackson Yarbrough runner-up in 16:08 and senior Leo Rutledge third in 16:37.


In addition to Yarbrough and Rutledge, Maclay had two more harriers in the top ten; sophmores Clayton Knox (5th, 16:58) and Carter Rothell (8th, 17:25). When Lawrence Bishop finished 21st in 18:17 for Maclay, the Marauders had 36 points and their ninth Region 1 boys' title in the last eleven years.


Finishing fourth in 16:43, junior Jonathan Tutton was first runner home for Pensacola Christian. Pensacola Christian had five scorers in the top fourteen, racking up a score of 44 points and taking second in the Region. Saint Johns Country Day was third, scoring 114 points behind Region champ Matthew Stratton. Saint Joseph was fourth with 136 points, led by sophomore Victor Farfan (6th, 17:08).


Maclay, Pensacola Christian, Saint Johns Country Day, and Saint Joseph were the four boys' teams that qualified for State out of 1A Region 1. The 2020 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship Meet will be contested in Tallahassee, Florida at Apalacheee Regional Park. The class 1A races are scheduled for Friday morning, 13 November 2020.
