Another win, another record for Leonardo Canete and Georgina Hernandez at the Chipola Challenge

Chipola Challenge 5K logo The fourth annual Chipola Challenge 5K was the largest yet, with 143 athletes completing the 3.1-mile tour of the Marianna, Florida campus of Chipola College. Up front, it was also the fastest Chipola Challenge yet--Leonardo Canete won the race with a course record time of 17:19. There was a new course record on the women's side as well, where Georgina Hernandez went 21:32 for the win, placing fifth overall.


The record that Leonardo Canete broke was his own; the Tallahassee, Florida master runner had won the Chipola Challenge in 2024, setting a standard of 17:26. Behind Canete, second place came down to a showdown between two high school cross-country runners, Marianna High junior Travis Ephriam and Poplar Springs High junior David Baber. Both Ephriam and Baber were clocked in 18:25, but Ephriam got to the finish line just before his Poplar Springs rival and took second.


Like Canete, Georgina Hernandez had raced the Chipola Challenge in 2024. That year the Quincy, Florida athlete won the women's division with a 23:57. Her winning mark in 2026, 21:32, would have put her 300 meters ahead of an athlete running 23:57.


Alena Brobst, a Chipola College frosh and an athlete on the school's cross-country team, went 24:23 to grab second in the women's standings, coing in twelfth overall., Macy Benton of Dothan, Alabama was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 25:17. Cottondale, Florida's Jody Bontrager was the first woman master and fifteenth female finisher, 48th overall in 32:23.

Glowing performances for John Ouzts and Kathy Walker at the Shining Shamrocks 5K

Shining ShamrocksFor the seventh year in a row, the Jackson County Education Foundation invited athletes to Marianna, Florida's Citizen's Park for the annual Shining With Shamrocks 5K Glow Run. On Friday evening, 7 March 2025, John Ouzts, a senior on the Marianna High cross-country team, won the the seventh annual event, running 20:10. Kathy Walker was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 24:06.


Twelve-year-old Hunter Bedini took second in 20:47. Alfonso Hernandez was third with a 21:12, Nevin Durden was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in fourth overall in 21:41.


The women's competition was quite close, with Kathy Walker just edging Jericka Glisson for first, 24:06 to 24:08. Just behind them there was an even closer battle for top woman master, with Sabrina Williams narrowly prevailing over Samantha Baswell, 24:12 to 24:13. Williams and Baswell were third and fourth in the women's standings and thirteenth and fifteenth overall.


211 athletes finished Jackson County Education Foundation's 2025 Shining With Shamrocks 5K Glow Run. Milestone Race Authority timed and scored the event.

Orinthal Striggles and Hannah Howell conquer the Chipola Challenge

In 1953, Chipola College moved to its current location on the north side of Marianna, Florida. I'm not privy to what the city fathers were thinking at the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were something like: "You know, this land is too hilly for growing cotton. We might as well put the school here."


The campus might be too hilly for mechanized agriculture, but not too hilly for the Chipola Challenge 5K. Master runner Orinthal Striggles, an Allen University distance coach, won the third annual event on Saturday morning, 1 February 2025, covering the 3.1 miles of slopes in 17:48. Hannah Howell of Hosford, Florida was the first woman in the race, coming in seventh overall in 24:00.

Thomas Howell of Hosford took the runner-up spot, running 18:57. Jason Tomlinson, a sophomor on the Blountstown High cross-country team, placed third in 20:31, almost half a minute faster than he had run in the 2024 Chipola Challenge.


Hailey Morrison, a seventh-grader on the Wewahitchka High cross-country squad, led the women's field early. 600 meters into the race, Hannah Howell was third among the women, trailing Morrison by more than 60 meters. Howell ultimately made up that distance, building up her own 50 meter lead on the way to a 24:00 win. Morrison took second in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 24:15. Abbigail Isabella of Marianna was the third woman and eleventh overall in 26:20. Carrie Smith of Hosford was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, coming in nineteenth overall in 29:05.

Maxwell Wester and Aubrey Smith shone at the Shining Shamrocks 5K

Shining ShamrocksMaxwell Wester, a frosh member of the Marianna High cross-country team, won the fifth annual Shining With Shamrocks 5K in Marianna, Florida on Friday evening, 8 March 2024. Wester toured the 3.1-mile course in 19:32, finishing more than 600 meters ahead of the next runner. Aubrey Smith was the first woman in the race, coming in eighth overall in 24:28.


Nine-year-old Evan Cantler was the overall runner-up in the 5K, running 22:15. Tallahassee, Florida athlete Michael Kennett was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 22:33.


Araceli Perez, a frosh-year harrier on the Malone High girls' cross-country team, took second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 25:26. Not far behind Perez, Bailey Smith was the third woman and fourteenth overall in 25:31. Nicole Goble was the first woman master and the sixth female finisher, twentieth overall in 26:41.


191 athletes finished Jackson County Education Foundation's 2024 Shining Shamrocks 5K. Milestone Race Authority timed and scored the event.

Leonardo Canete and Georgina Hernandez took the Chipola Challenge

Chipola Challenge 5K logoFinishing more than 200 meters ahead of the next runner, Leonardo Canete won the second annual Chipola Challenge 5K in Marianna, Florida on Saturday morning, 3 February 2024. The Tallahassee, Florida master runner completed the 3.1-mile tour of the Chipola College campus in 17:26. Georgina Hernandez of Quincy, Florida was the first woman in the race, coming in thirteenth overall in 23:58.


Leonardo Canete's 17:26 was a new Chipola Challenge record, breaking the old mark of 19:48 set by Diego Nandho in the inaugural Challenge in 2023. Nandho, a frosh on the Blountstown High cross-country team, was eighth in the 2024 Challenge, running 22:32.


Another Blountstown High cross-country runner, senior Hunter Shuler, ran 18:16 in the 2024 Challenge, placing second to Canete. A frosh cross-country runner for the Enterprise State Boll Weevils, Lamar Sowell, edged Thomas Howell for third, 18:40 to 18:43. Howell is a coach of the Liberty County High cross-country team.


Georgina Hernandez also set a Chipola Challenge record; her 23:58 bettered the women's mark of 25:59 run by Kirsten Jones in 2023. Not far behind Hernandez, Bailey Smith and Dixie Gilmore battled for the runner-up spot in the women's standings. Graceville, Florida's Smith came in just ahead of Gilmore, 24:04 to 24:06. The two were fourteenth and fifteenth overall. Nicole Goble of Fountain, Florida was the first woman master in the 5K and the ninth female finisher, 30th overall in 27:48.


Chipola College was established in 1947. The college hosted the first Chipola Challenge 5K in 2023 as a 75th anniversary event. 77 athletes showed up to finish on a rainy day in February to finish that inaugural race. The Challenge was back in on a cool day under clear skies in 2024, and 144 athletes finished, nearly double the previous year's total. Look for a third annual Chipola Challenge in February 2025.

Jackson Welch and Holly Burnett hit the roads at Run Baby Run

In the United States, October is right in the middle of the high school cross-country season. Nevertheless, On Saturday morning, 17 October 2020, Jackson Welch took a break from racing for the Malone High cross-country team to compete on the roads of Marianna, Florida in the ninth annual Run Baby Run 5K. 56 other athletes may have been wishing he hadn't. Welch outkicked master runner Richard Fernandez, 18:46 to 18:48, to win the 3.1-mile road race. Holly Burnett was the first woman in the 5K, placing twentieth overall in 25:24.


Welch, an eighth-grader, had raced for the Malone Tigers just seven days earlier in the boys' 5K at the Dolphin Dash Cross-Country Meet in Panama City, where he had placed 21st in 20:02. Four days after the Run Baby Run, he and the Tigers were scheduled to race again in Port Saint Joe, Florida.


Behind Welch and Fernandez, Donalsonaville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson finished third in 18:59.


Edna Reed was the first woman master in the race and the second female finisher, coming in 24th overall in 28:17. Sydney Basford took third in the women's standings, placing 25th overall in 29:16.


57 athletes finished the 2020 Run Baby Run 5K. The Pregnancy Center of Marianna hosted the race.

Hodge leaves the crowd behind at Run Baby Run

2017 Run Baby Run 5KWith an 800-meter lead in a 5000-meter race, it was as if Tallahassee, Florida master runner Paul Hodge was in a different race from the other athletes. Hodge ran 18:55 to win the seventh annual Run Baby Run 5K in Marianna, Florida on Saturday morning, 7 October 2017. Ashley Johnson was the top woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 28:28. The event took place at Citizen's Lodge Park in Marianna.


Ivan Cortes took second in 22:19. Master runner Mark McCarra was third in 22:35.


Amanda Dehn was second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 29:13. Cissy Barfield was the first woman master and third female finisher, tenth overall in 30:28.


31 athletes finished the 2017 Run Baby Run 5K. Proceeds of the annual race benefit A Women's Pregnancy Center of Marianna, Florida.

Scharlepp and Johnson Gopher-A-Run in Marianna

Sometimes races are named without regard for how people are going to talk about them or, more importantly to me, write about them. Take the 5K hosted by Golson Elementary School in Marianna, Florida. When the Parent-Teacher Organization decided to hold a race as a fundraiser in 2016, they thought it would be a good idea to use the school's mascot, the gopher, in the name. No problem there; the race would be called the Gopher 5K, right? Well, wrong. Some wag thought it would be clever to use "gopher" in some word play. So we ended up with the Gopher-A-Run 5K. Groan-worthy, and how exactly do you write a name that's really a phrase? It's not particularly specific to the sport either; it could just as easily have been the Gopher-A-Dip Open Water Swim, the I-Could-Gopher-A-Cupcake Bake Sale, or the Gopher-Broke Demolition Derby.


But the name stuck. And the race returned on 25 February 2017, so here I am writing about the second annual Gopher-A-Run 5K.

The race was held outside Marianna in Florida Caverns State Park, a beautiful venue, however you feel about the name of the event. Tallahassee runner Zack Scharlepp won the 3.1-mile event, running 19:42. Mark McCarra was the top master runner and overall runner-up in 21:54. Ezra Caynor took third in 22:50, and master runner Jimmy Sims was fourth overall in 23:13.


Danielle Johnson of Marianna won the women's title in 27:16, placing eighth overall. Chandra Hanson was the first woman master and second female finisher, ninth overall in 27:46. Master runner Mandy Grover was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 30:47, while Rachel Scharlepp was the fourth woman and fifteenth overall in 30:56.


51 athletes finished Golson Elementary School's 2017 Gopher-A-Run 5K.

In Marianna, the TCC Lady Eagles get their first cross country win

Mark it down! Friday, 30 September 2016, was the date that the Tallahassee Community College Eagles got their first win in women's cross country. In a dual meet with Chipola College at Citizen's Lodge Park in Marianna, Florida, the Eagles edged the Indians 26 to 31. Chipola frosh Nicole Morse was first in the 5K race, running 20:16.


Dual meets used to be a staple of track and cross country, but they've become a rarity. However, there are only four women's cross country teams in Florida at the Junior College level; Chipola College and Tallahassee Community College have long-standing rivalries in basketball, softball, and baseball; and the two school are barely sixty miles apart. If they were any closer, they'd be in the same time zone. So when the Eagles added women's cross country as a sport in 2016, it was natural to schedule a dual meet.

The race started after the high school events of the Chipola Invitational. It was the second meeting for the two teams; the Eagles and Indians had competed a month earlier at the Cougar Challenge in Tallahassee, where TCC has placed third in the team standings and Chipola fourth. In Marianna as at the Cougar Challenge, Chipola's Nicole Morse led her team, and all the TCC runners as well. Crossing the finish line 180 meters ahead of the runner-up, Morse won the five-kilometer race in 20:16.


Samantha Reilly led the Eagles, placing second in 21:02. Chipola sophomore Lydia Wiedeman was third in 21:17, but then Tallahassee took the next two places with Susan Madeux (4th, 21:34) and Mia Wiederkehr (5th, 21:41). Ashley Jones (7th, 23:24) and Ellie Stubblefield (8th, 23:53) finished the scoring for the Eagles, and Tallahassee had 26 points. Anything less than 28 points wins a dual meet, so the competition had been decided--TCC had its first win in cross country.

After the dual, Chipola and Tallahassee went their separate ways. TCC was scheduled to run in the FSU Invitational back home in Tallahassee on 7 October 2016, and Chipola had plans to run at Disney on 8 October 2016. But the two teams would cross paths again at the NJCAA Region 8 Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

Davison, Merritt battle to Rebel Run 5K victories in Marianna

Mississippi has Vicksburg, Atlanta has Sherman's March, and northern Virginia is carpeted with Civil War battlefields, but Florida was never a major theater of war in the Rebellion of 1861-1865. Loyal Floridians thus embrace what Civil War history we have. Lake City celebrates the Battle of Olustee, and Tallahassee the Battle of Natural Bridge. And the Panhandle treasures its memories of the Battle of Marianna. Marianna, Florida marked the 147th anniversary of the 27 September 1864 battle with the Marianna Day festival, which included re-enactments, a parade, and educational exhibits. And for the first time, this year's Marianna Days included a 5K "Rebel Run" road race on Saturday, 24 September 2011. The inaugural Rebel Run 5K title went to Marianna firefighter Davin Davison in 20:40, just ahead of runner-up and top master Mark McCarra in 20:47. The women's race was not nearly as close, with Ashley Merritt running 26:03 and finishing nearly 700 meters ahead of the next woman. Lori Kibler was the fastest female master in the race, posting 36:05 for the 3.1-mile distance.


Davison shared the lead with Buddy Baxter for the first kilometer, but the second kilometer was all Davison's, and he passed the mile mark alone in 5:53, 25 seconds up on the field. During the third kilometer Davison continued to lead, but Mark McCarra had moved into second and was starting to close the gap, moving to within 18 seconds of Davison at the halfway point. McCarra continued to gain on Davison, but never quite caught the firefighter, who held on to win 20:40 to 20:47.


The 2011 Rebel Run 5K started and finished at the Marianna Citizen's Lodge and included a tour through the hilly campus of Chipola College. The 25 runners were serenaded at the finish by Civil War period fife music performed by a reenactor.
