Leonardo Canete and Rachel NeSmith find victory on the Quail Trail

Quail Trail 5KPick any Saturday in autumn, and all over the United States you'll find a multiplicity of five-kilometer cross-country races--in parks, forests, fields, and country clubs. It's just one beautiful place to run after another. Of course, all those races are for high school cross-country teams.


There are a few such races for the rest of us, though. For instance, there was the ninth annual Quail Trail 5K, contested south of Thomasville, Georgia on the grounds of scenic Pebble Hill Plantation on Saturday morning, 19 October 2024. Making his first visit to Pebble Hill, Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete won the race in 17:48. Rachel NeSmith of Thomasville was the first woman in the 5K, placing sixth overall in 21:10.


Charlie Johnson, another Tallahassee master runner, finished runner-up to Canete in 18:14. Thomasville master runner Kevin Ethridge took third in 20:35.


Thomasville athlete Rebekah Campiglia was the second woman and seventh overall in 22:08. Kenley Reneau, an eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Thomas County Middle School, placed third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 25:22.


139 athletes finished the 2024 Quail Trail 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed and scored the race.

Harriers Matt Mizereck and Alison Wells rule the morning at the Quail Trail 5K

Quail Trail 5KSouth of Thomasville, Georgia, Pebble Hill Plantation hosted the eighth Quail Trail 5K on Saturday morning, 21 October 2023. It had been just over eight years since the seventh Quail Trail in 2015, and it's anyone's guess how many of the athletes from that earlier race were at Pebble Hill for the 2023 event. Nearly 200 made it to the Plantation, though, and the fastest of those by far was Matt Mizereck. Hailing from nearby Tallahassee, Florida, Mizereck won the 5000-meter cross-country race by more than 900 meters, running 16:25. The first woman in the race was Alison Wells of Bainbridge, Georgia, third overall in 20:21.


It was hardly surprising to see Matt Mizereck excel in a cross-country race; as a harrier at Leon High School, Mizereck had won Florida's high school cross-country state championship three times in a row from 2007 to 2009. Gabriel Ponce took second to Mizereck at the Quail Trail 5K with a 20:10. Nicholas May, a sophomore on the Thomasville High cross-country team, placed third in the men's standings and fourth overall 20:21. Kevin Ethridge was the first master runner in the Quail Trail, the fourth male finisher and fifth overall in 20:42.


Alissa Cole took the runner-up spot in the women's standings, coming in twelfth overall in 23:13. Ruffian Tyner edged Cathy Bond to finish as the top woman master, 24:20 to 24:21. Tyner was third in the women's division and seventeenth overall; Bond was the fourth woman and eighteenth overall.


170 athletes finished the 2023 Quail Trail 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed and scored the race.

Kelly and Thompson tear through the trails at Quail Trail

Quail Trail 5KFrom its first running in 2009, the Quail Trail 5K has been a sort of opening act for Thomasville High's Quail Trail Invitational Cross Country meet. It's a full morning of athletics on the grounds of Pebble Hill Plantation, south of Thomasville, Georgia. Hundreds of high school and middle school athletes compete, but the morning starts with the Quail Trail 5K. It's an opening act.


Of course, Queen, Elton John, and the Beatles were once opening acts, too.


Lake Park, Georgia, athlete Ryan Kelly won the seventh annual Quail Trail 5K on Saturday morning, 19 September 2015, running 18:41. It was the third Quail Trail win in the last four years for the Valdosta High cross country coach. At 19:11 Greg Waddell of Bainbridge, Georgia, was the runner-up and top master. In 2014, Neil White was running for Thomasville High in the Quail Trail High School boys race, finishing 25th. As an alumnus, he placed third in the 2015 Quail Trail 5K with a 19:41.


Thomasville, Georgia, runner Melissa Thompson was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 20:10. Kate Chunka of Tallahassee, Florida, was second in the women's standings, coming in 13th overall in 23:03. Sky Feller was the top woman master and third female finisher, 22nd overall in 25:17.


99 athletes finished the seventh annual Quail Trail 5K.

Colquitt County girls and Lowndes boys repeat at Quail Trail

Quail Trail InvitationalMost of the visitors to Pebble Hill Plantation--south of Thomasville, Georgia--come to tour the house, admire the grounds, or view the butterfly garden. Some are there as wedding guests. But since 2008, on one Saturday in September, they come to run. The runners come in greater numbers than any other visitors. On Saturday morning, 19 September 2015, there were 855 high school and middle school athletes at the usually sedate plantation, competing in four different races and representing 74 different teams. It was Thomasville High's seventh annual Quail Trail Cross Country Invitational, one of the largest meetings in South Georgia.


High school competition opened at 9:00 AM with the girls' 5K. Colquitt County sophomore Elizabeth Funderburk was coming off a second-place finish at the Lee County Invitational the previous week, but no one was going to finish ahead of her at Pebble Hill. Fundberburk won the Quail Trail high school girls' 5K by more than 300 meters, running 21:00. Lowndes sophomore Phoebe Bills was second in 22:27, and Thomasville senior Rebekah Smith finished third in 22:35.


Led by the 23:19 sixth-place finish of Ashlee Golden, Tift County repeated as Quail Trail high school girls team champs, scoring a winning 70 points. Joining Golden as Tift County scorers were senior Madison Honeycutt (15th, 24:17) and juniors Harley Stephens (16th, 24:21), Abby Kay Choate (23rd, 25:07), and Lisbeth Cortes (24th, 25:07). Lee County had placed one spot ahead of Tift County a week earlier at the Lee County Invitational, but at the Quail Trail the order was reversed--Lee County was second with 84 points, led by junior Ansley Cain (13th, 24:04). Colquitt County's Lady Packers edged Lowndes for third, 99 to 101.

In the high school boys' competition Lowndes also successfully defended a 2014 Quail Trail title, sneaking by second place Bainbridge 62 to 69. Thomas County Central was third with 93 points. The tone of the race was set when Lowndes junior Kaleb Wolfenden won the race and Bainbridge sophomore Poncherella Leonard finished runner up. Wolfenden, coming off a win at the Lee County Invitational, ran 16:48, while Leonard posted a 17:09. Lowndes senior Chance Roe was third at 17:28, and Lee County senior Robert Grooms placed fourth in 17:43. Sam Gelabert, a senior, led the Thomas County Central charge, finishing fifth in 17:53.


Like Lowndes, Bainbridge put a second runner in the top ten--Bearcat frosh Caleb Harris was tenth in 18:32. Lowndes still had the best total, finishing their scoring with frosh Hayden Bills (12th, 18:43), junior Daniel Swilley (14th, 18:47), and junior Matthew Sexton (32nd, 20:17).

At the 2014 Quail Trail the Crusaders of Holy Comforter Episcopal School in Tallahassee, Florida, had taken the middle school girls team title, leaving Georgia's Tift Middle Schools to settle for second place. In 2015 the Tift girls had better success against the invaders. Tift eighth-grader Emily Golden won the middle school girls 3K race in 12:17, as her team put four runners in the top ten and scored 39 points to take first. Holy Comforter was second with 48 points. Eighth-graders Caroline Vickers (7th, 13:09) and Rebekah Larger (8th, 13:15), seventh-grader Noelia Sandoval (10th, 13:22), and sixth-grader Ainsley Toews also scored for Tift. The top scorers for the Crusaders were eighth-graders Avery Smith (3rd, 12:48) and Elizabeth Calabro (5th, 12:56).

Carson Locke, an eighth-grader racing for the Viking Runners of Valdosta, won the middle school boys' 3K in 11:15. Holy Comforter's Joseph Ashebo outkicked Ben Phillips of Lee County 11:21 to 11:22 for the runner-up spot, setting up a struggle in the team standings between Lee County and Holy Comforter. Sixth-grader Josh Macklin finished fourth for Lee County in 11:26, but Holy Comforter put one of its own sixth graders, Leo Kelly, eighth in 11:43. Before another Lee County runner could finish, eighth-grader Brecht Heuchan (12th, 11:59), seventh-grader Jackson Jones (14th, 12:01), and sixth-grader Ben Kirbo (15th, 12:01) had scored for the Crusaders, giving Holy Comforter 51 points and the top spot in a field of 18 middle school boys' teams. Lee County was second with 82 points. Berrien County placed third with 110 points, led by eighth-grader Mitchell Kallam (7th, 11:33).

Rebekah Smith and Andrew Jackson lead another Thomasville sweep in Region 1-AA

Rebekah SmithIt's not true that Thomasville High teams always win the Region 1-AA cross-country meet. Why, just five years ago the Fitzgerald boys took home the 2009 Region 1 title. Of course, even that year the Thomasville boys were no worse than second, and the Thomasville girls won their race. And every year since then the Thomasville Bulldogs have claimed the Region titles, both boys and girls.


This year was no exception. The Bulldogs pulled off yet another sweep of the Region 1-AA team titles, this time on the course at Pebble Hill on Wednesday morning, 29 October 2014.


The Bulldogs' big day started with the girls' 5K race at 10:30 AM. Just four day earlier, Thomasville junior Rebekah Smith had won the Yellow Jacket Invitational, the first cross-country victory of her career. She must have liked the idea, because was first across the finish line again in the Region 1-AA race, coming in nearly a minute ahead of the next runner at 22:11. Is winning becoming a habit for Smith?


Emily Boyd"I hope so!" she laughed.


Emily Boyd of Berrien placed second in 23:08. Boyd was joined in the top ten by two other Berrien Rebels, Janna Jernigan (4th, 23:25) and Haley Jernigan (10th, 25:17). But Thomasville had three other runners in the top ten--juniors Jacara Hayes (5th, 24:16) and Rebecca Jane White (7th, 24:40) plus frosh Miyah Beard (9th, 25:09). And while the Rebels were still waiting for their fourth scorer, junior Demetria Miley crossed the finish line for the Bulldogs, 11th in 25:30. That gave the Thomasville girls 37 points and a seventh straight Region 1 title for the Bulldogs. Berrien was second with 43 points, Pelham third with 84, and Fitzgerald fourth with 104. Those were the four teams that qualified for the GHSA State Championship on 8 November 2014 in Carrollton, Georgia.

Andrew JacksonThomasville senior Travet "TJ" Witherspoon charged out into the lead right from the start of the GHSA Region 1 boys' race. For the first mile, Berrien sophomore Haven Gilbert ran as if he were stuck to Witherspoon, but the Bulldog senior broke away during the second mile, arriving at the two-mile mark with a ten-second lead. Meanwhile, another Thomasville senior, Andrew Jackson, had moved into second place. In each of four earlier races this season, Jackson had finished behind Witherspoon. During the third mile of this race, though, Jackson made Witherspoon's lead disappear. With 400 meters to go Jackson was the one with the ten-second lead. He continued to widen that lead on his way to an 18:29 win and the GHSA Region 1-AA title. Witherspoon held off Bryce Tucker of Berrien 18:47 to 18:49, taking second. Thomasville senior Neil White was fourth in 18:59. The Bulldogs' next two runners were junior Alex Perralta (9th, 20:16) and senior Jacob Bruhn (15th, 21:06), giving Thomasville a winning total of 31 points and a trip to the State Meet in Carrollton. Also qualifying for State were Berrien, second with 42 points; Seminole County, third with 82; and Fitzgerald, fourth with 107.

Lowndes harriers Rogers and Morse get wins at Quail Trail Invite

Quail Trail InvitationalCall it the Thomasville High Invitational, or call it the Quail Trail Invitational, or cover all bases and call it the Thomasville High Quail Trail Invitational. The name keeps changing, but since 2009 it has been consistent that on the final Saturday of September, Thomasville High hosts a large cross-country meet at Pebble Hill Plantation, just south of Thomasville, Georgia. The course is also consistent, a mix of meadow and forest and magnolia-lined avenues and red clay hills. But isn't that a recipe for cross country?


After a community race, the sixth annual Invitational got started at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning, 27 September 2014, with the high school girls 5K. Lowndes High sophmore Mackenzie Morse won that race, running 20:39 to pick up her fourth win of the season. Lowndes also picked up second place, with frosh Makenzee Page running 21:27. Rebekah Smith, a junior from host school Thomasville, placed third in 21:56.


Having the first two runners wasn't enough to get Lowndes to the top of the team standings, though. Tift County answered with three runners in the top ten--sophomore Sloan Fletcher (4th, 22:48), junior Madison Honeycutt (8th, 23:12), and frosh Ashlee Golden (9th, 23:12). The next two Tift girls, seniors Blakeley Bergeron (11th, 23:37) and Sarah Willis (16th, 23:50), finished before Lowndes' fourth scorer, giving Tift 47 points and the team title. Lowndes was second with 69 points and Valdosta edged Thomasville for third in the 14-team field, 104 to 106.

In the next race, the Lowndes boys did the Lowndes girls one better by taking the first three places. Dylan Rogers won the race in 17:22, followed by runner-up Chance Roe in 17:30, with third-place occupied by Andrew Elam in 17:38. All three runners were Lowndes juniors. The first non-Lowndes runner in the race was Rickards junior Solomon Stevens. Up from Tallahassee, Florida, Stevens was fourth in 17:48. Rickards had three runners in the top ten, but once freshman Elijah Boyd (12th, 18:26) and junior Will Smith (13th, 18:27) came home for Lowndes, the team competition was over. Lowndes had 31 points, winning their first boys' team title ever at Quail Trail. Rickards went home to Tallahassee with second place, and Thomas County Central was third with 129.


A few of these teams will be back at Pebble Hill Plantation on Wednesday morning, 29 October 2014, when Thomasville High hosts the GHSA Region 1-2A championship meet.

Katherine Resavage, an eighth-grader at Tallahassee private school powerhouse Holy Comforter, outran Tift County's Emily Golden 11:40 to 11:46 to win the middle school girls' 3K. Holy Comforter also put scorers Hannah Hosay (5th, 12:40), Elizabeth Calabro (7th, 12:45), and Ella Thames (8th, 12:50) in the top ten. When Holy Comforter's fifth runner, Emma McGibany, finished 12th in 13:06, the Crusaders had a winning score of 33 points. Tift was second with 86 points. Led by Kelsey Morse's ninth place 12:53, Valdosta's Viking Runners Club took third with 133 points.

2014 was the third year in the Quail Trail middle school boys' race for Bainbridge's Caleb Harris, It was the eighth-graders first Quail Trail win, though, as Harris blew away the field with a 10:35. It was his fifth win in five races this season, with earlier wins coming at the Pelham Hornet Invitational, the Cougar Challenge, the Lee County Invitational, and the Bearcat Invitational.


Behind Harris, Carson Locke of the Viking Runners Club was runner-up at 11:22, and Holy Comforter's Bryce Valveri edged Bryce Stephens of Tift for third, 11:29 to 11:30.


Seminole County's Aubry Johnson was the only runner on his team to break into the top ten, placing tenth in 11:49. But Seminole County also had Taylor Garrett (13th, 11:59), Logan Jones (21st, 12:20), Zane Widner (23rd, 12:21), and Payton Price (25th, 12:27). The five together gave Seminole County 92 points and the middle school boys' team title. Bainbridge was second in the 18-team field with 109 points, and Berrien County placed third with 116.

Kelly and Elam tops on the trail at Quail Trail

Quail Trail 5KSouth of Thomasville, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 27 September, Valdosta High cross-country coach won the sixth annual Quail Trail 5K, racing around the grounds of Pebble Hills Plantation in 17:40. Tallahassee's Jay Smith was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing runner-up in 18:54. Just behind Smith, Bainbridge, Georgia, master runner Greg Waddell placed third in 19:11. Valdosta master runner Nancy Elam was the first woman finisher, coming in 18th overall in 24:03. About a hundred meters back, Amy Zboralski was the women's runner-up, finishing 21st overall in 24:40. Destiny Roe of Valdosta's Viking Runners Club was third in the women's standings, placing 23rd overall in 24:59. Roe would race again that morning, returning to finish fourth in the middle school girls' 3K race.


Since 2009, the Quail Trail 5K has been the opening event in the Quail Trail Invitational, part of a program that includes high school and middle school races. Coach Kelly was at the Quail Trail with his Valdosta Middle School Team in 2012 when he won the race, and again in 2013 when he finished second to Lowndes High sophomore Chance Roe.


101 athletes finished the 2014 Quail Trail 5K.

Thomasville runners continue Region 1-AA dominance

When it comes to the GHSA Region 1-AA cross-country meet, Thomasville High needs to remember to bring their uniforms, their racing shoes, and their brooms. The Bulldogs made a clean sweep of the meet for the second year in a row at Pebble Hill Plantation south of Thomasville, Georgia on Wednesday morning, 26 October 2011. Behind sophomore Mareika Haaren's winning 23:19, the Thomasville girls team won the region title with a near-perfect 17 points, taking the first four places in the five-kilometer race. In the boys' race, Thomasville's Grif Rutherford successfully defended his 2010 Region title with a 17:40 win, leading his team to victory with 40 points.


It was a clear morning with moderate temperatures, beautiful conditions to showcase the beautiful Pebble Hill venue. The girls ran just after 10:30, the start somewhat delayed by the late arrival of the Albany team. A trotting horse pulling a sulky guided the runners around the course. After a circuit of the meadow where the race started, Thomasville's first four runners were at the front of the field, led by Kara Meng. Meng continued to set the pace through two kilometers, but during the third kilometer Thomasville's Mareika Haaren took over the lead, opening up a six-second margin. Meng never lost contact, though, and closed the gap over the final two kilometers. At the finish line it was Haaren over Meng, but only by a single second, 23:19 to 23:20. Defending Region champ Rosalie White was third for Thomasville in 23:55. Emma Fennelly (4th, 25:25) and Samantha Clark (7th, 25:12) completed Thomasville's scoring, giving the Bulldogs 17 points and the win. The victory qualified Thomasville to run in the state championships in Carrollton on 5 November 2011. The top four teams advance out of the Region, so Albany (2nd, 53), Cook County (3rd, 88), and Early County (4th, 96) would be joining Thomasville in Carrollton.


The boys' 5K race immediately followed the girls'. The horse-and-sulky had vanished, but the boys followed a Gator around the course. Mostly, though, they followed Thomasville sophomore Grif Rutherford. Rutherford was leading right after the start, chased by Fitzgerald senior Pedro Martinez. Rutherford continued to pull away, though, and ended up winning more than 150 meters in 17:40, 48 seconds faster than he ran at the 2010 Region 1-AA Meet. Martinez hung on to second, running 18:17. Including Rutherford, Thomasville put three runners in the top ten, setting up a 40-point total--good enough to defend their 2010 Region title. Fitzgerald took second with 69 points and Cook County third with 74, each team joining Thomasville in qualifying for a trip to the state meet in Carrollton. For the fourth spot, though, Early County and Berrien County each had 100 points. The tie-breaker was the sixth runner on each team. It was close. Early County's sixth runner placed 38th, and Berrien's 39th, less than eight seconds apart, but enough to send Early County on to Carrollton, ending Berrien County's season.
