2009 FHSAA District 1-2A Cross Country Meet

On Saturday 7 November 2009 the 2A high school cross-country runners of FHSAA District 1 converged on Tallahassee's new Apalachee Regional Park Trail for the first round of the state championship series. When the day's running was over, the girls' teams from West Florida, Florida State, South Walton, Wakulla, Pensacola Catholic, and Suwannee had qualified to advance to the Region 1 meet, their next step on the trail to the state championships. Among the boys teams, Pensacola Catholic, West Florida, Arnold, Florida State, Godby, and South Walton earned a spot in the Region 1 meet. For everyone else, the 2009 cross-country season is over.

In the girls' 5K race, West Florida's Jeronda Stringfield, Bria Upshur, and Keyundra McCastle jumped out in front early. They were still leading at the mile, but they were being stalked. At the two-mile mark Stringfield was running in first, but her teammates had dropped back. Alex Weiner of South Walton and Mikayla Hodges of Arnold were now at Stringfield's heels. Running through the woods on the third mile, Weiner broke the race open and went on to win in 20:50. Stringfield outkicked Hodges in the final yard to take second, 21:08 to 21:12. West Florida also took fourth, fifth, and seventh, but had to wait till the 34th runner had crossed the line for their fifth scorer. Nevertheless, West Florida won the district title, outscoring runner-up Florida State 44 to 60.

Pensacola Catholic's Roman Kowalski didn't immediately take the lead in the boy's 5K race, but he was among the leaders early in the race. After the first mile Kowalski seized the front position for himself, but Bay's Gabriel Holguin and Dieumy Duclos of Godby remained in striking distance. Duclos faded, but Holguin shadowed Kowalski to the very end of the race. On the final straight Kowalski continued to hold off Holguin, running 16:42 to win by four seconds. Led by Kowalski's win, Catholic put five scorers in the top fourteen and won the district title with 45 points, well ahead of runner-up West Florida's 84 points.

After the district races, Godby hosted the "Fundracer 5K" open race on the course. Jana Stolting of Maclay ran the most remarkable performance in this third race, finishing second overall in 17:46, breaking her own high school girls' 5K course record at Apalachee Regional Park. Stolting had set the original record for the course earlier this season at the Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational.

The top six teams and top fifteen individuals in each of the district races advance to the Region 1-2A meet, which will be held in conjunction with the Region 1-3A meet at Sunnyhill Farm in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 14 November 2009. The District 1 qualifiers will be joined at the Region 1 meet by the qualifiers from District 2. 2009 FHSAA District 1-1A Cross Country Meet

The girls from Maclay, Jay, Aucilla Christian, Altha, Pensacola Christian, and Freeport high school cross-country teams each successfully cleared the first hurdle on the way to the Florida state cross-country championships by advancing out of the FHSAA District 1 meet, run Thursday, 5 November 2009 at Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida. For Wewahitchka, Baker, and Paxton it was one, done, and wait till next year. Maclay's girls easily won the district title, scoring a near-perfect 17 points. The Marauders' top three girls--Shelby Salimone (20:25), Jana Stolting (20:26), and Stephanie Kurgatt (20:27)--toured the course together, taking the first three places. Their teammate Kristin Sweeney (20:43) finished immediately behind them in fourth. Emerlee Trevino (5th, 21:28) of Jay and Sarah Sorenson (7th, 21:57) of Aucilla Christian made it across the line before Maclay's fifth runner, Lindsey Poole (8th, 21:59), preventing the Marauder's from scoring a perfect 15 points.

The boys' race followed. The Maclay boys also dominated on the home course, putting five runners in the top eight and scoring 22 points for the district title. Jay (67), Pensacola Christian (93), North Florida Christian (148), Freeport (178), and Wewahitchka (194) also advanced out of the district. Similar to the girls' race, Maclay's Patrick Swain and Austin Stevens ran easily together up front, both finishing in 17:23.

Both races were run on a new course on the Maclay School campus, a modified version of what was run the previous week at the city championships. The runners circled a loop three times and then finished with a lap on the school track (the course included close to a kilometer of running on the track).

The first six teams and the top fifteen individuals in each race qualified to go on to the Region 1-1A meet, which will be held at Sante Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, 14 November 2009. The District 1 qualifiers will be joined by the District 2 qualifiers at the Region 1 meet. Kevin Sweeney wins FSECC 5K

Ocala's Kevin Sweeney reached the finish line ahead of over 400 other athletes, running 17:56 for the win at the FSECC 5K in Southwood on 5 November 2009. Sweeney was a few steps ahead of runner-up and defending champion Tim Unger, the top master finisher at 17:59. The morning's fleetest female was Kelly Stevens, who ran 21:06 to finish well ahead of runner-up Brook Pace at 22:50. The third woman across the finish line was the top woman master finisher, Julie Clark, in a time of 23:17.

By the second mile of the race, Sweeney and Unger had shaken off the rest of the field and were alone up front, Sweeney leading Unger. Over the next two miles Sweeney could not shake Unger, but Unger could not catch Sweeney. Never more than few strides apart, the leaders held their relative positions all the way to the end of the race. In the women's competition, Stevens took the lead early and held it, moving steadily away from the other women until she finished the race a quarter-mile ahead of the runner-up, Pace.

FSECC is the Florida State Employees Charitable Campaign, and the race benefits the state workers' United Way campaign. To encourage participation, there is an award for the state agency with the greatest number of entries--this year's honor went to the Florida Department of Health. A further incentive is the opportunity to get out of the office for an hour or two to run (or walk) a 5K around the Southwood area on a beautiful morning. For most of us, that would be reason enough.

Another Boston Mini Win For Rosen

There have been thirty Boston Mini-Marathons since the south Georgia town first hosted the 13.1-mile event in 1980, but it may take a historian of the race to remember when someone other than Sheryl Rosen won the women's division. Tallahassee's Rosen won her fourth straight women's title in the Boston Mini on Saturday morning, 31 October 2009, finishing seventh overall in 1:27:10. Rosen's closest challenger in the women's competition was Olivia Swedberg who ran 1:34:23 to place nineteenth overall. Master (over 40) honors for the women went to Atlanta's Lisa Dillmar, fourth woman and 41st overall in 1:44:40.

The fastest runner of the day was Vince Molosky, overall winner in 1:19:49. Molosky took the lead early, pursued by master runners Tony Guillen and Carl Nordhielm. During the second half of the race Guillen was able to break Nordhielm. But unlike the 20K at Tall Timbers, Molosky stayed on course and Guillen was unable to catch him. Guillen ended up second in 1:20:25 while Nordhielm was third in 1:21:35.

The Boston Mini-Marathon is unique among small-town Georgia races. There are quite a few such races associated with a festival--for example, the Rose City Run is associated with Thomasville's Rose Festival. However, in Boston the Mini Marathon came first, and the Marathon Festival followed. For thirty years the race has traded shamelessly on having a similar name to a race in the northeast. Quite often, "mini" appears in much smaller lettering than "Boston" and "Marathon" on race materials. The course hasn't changed much if at all in the last three decades. Starting in downtown Boston, the runners head east (into the rising sun) on old US 84, the Dixie Road. The Dixie Road goes through farm country, passing fields, pastures, and farm houses, but hardly a tree for the first six miles. Starting around the six-mile mark, the road takes the runners through a wooded area to a turn-around point at six-and-a-half miles, a few miles outside of Dixie. Here, the runners do an about-face and retrace their steps back to Boston. The finish line is about a tenth of a mile beyond the starting line in order to make the course a full half marathon. The road doesn't wind much, and the slopes are gentle, although many runners will swear that on the way back the hills grow much taller than they were on the way out.

Camp Jordan Park walking track, East Ridge, Tennessee

Suppose that you're on a driving trip through Tennessee and north Georgia along Interstate 75. It's a long drive, and you really want to get out of the car and stretch your legs, maybe even go for a run or a walk. Well, you could do a lot worse than to leave the highway outside of Chattanooga on Exit 1 and head for Camp Jordan Park and its two-mile walking track.

The park is only about a mile off of I-75 near where West Chickamauga Creek flows into South Chickamauga Creek in East Ridge, Tennessee. It's a low, flat area without many trees to interfere with the ball fields throughout the 257-acre park. The wooded areas are confined to the rim of the park, which is where you can find the walking track. The walking track makes a circuit around the park of almost exactly two miles. The trail surface is gravel, firm enough to hold up in wet weather but not the kind of hard pavement that beats up your legs. If you really can't abide the gravel, there is plenty of good green grass on either side of the trail. Signs mark the half-mile, the mile, the mile-and-a-half, and the two-mile points around the loop. These are measured from where Camp Jordan Parkway crosses the east side of the trail, but it's a loop--you can start anywhere and run either clockwise or counter-clockwise. The two places where Camp Jordan Parkway crosses the trail, by the way, are the only two places where traffic crosses the trail at all. Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain may not be far away, but the topography of the park is anything but mountainous. The few slopes on the loop are quite gentle.

The trail never seemed crowded when I visited, but was well used by a good number of walkers, runners, and cyclists. Because of the time of year (August) and the end-of-summer coolth in the air, I kept expecting to encounter a team of cross country runners from an East Ridge High School, but none ever came thundering by. Maybe they train elsewhere, or maybe I was just there at the wrong time of day. A two-mile loop is a bit short if you're looking to get in some serious mileage, but near the half-mile sign there is a bridge that takes you over West Chickamauga Creek to the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway Trail--another multi-use trail that you can add a few miles on. At the time of my visit a portion of the trail had fallen into South Chickamauga Creek, but the gap was being repaired (and trail users were picking their way around it, anyway).

To get to Camp Jordan Park, turn east onto Ringgold Road (US 41/76) after leaving Interstate 75 on Exit 1. Make the first left onto St Thomas St, immediately making another left onto the Camp Jordan Parkway. Camp Jordan Parkway will take you straight into (and eventually through) Camp Jordan Park. The Parkway crosses the trail in two places, both of which have parking nearby.

Muddy at Maclay

It's a meet with an identity crisis. This year it was called the "city championship," an odd name for an event that included teams from schools as far flung as Marianna, which isn't even in the same time zone as Tallahassee. A couple of years ago the same meet was billed as the "Big Bend Championship," which was somewhat more accurate, but the name didn't last. The course has always been around the Maclay School campus, but changes from year to year. This year it was a multi-loop affair, with a gesture at being "real" cross country by routing the runners through a mud-filled holding pond. On the other hand, the five-kilometer course also included over a kilometer of running on the Maclay School track, which probably falls outside of the mud-lovers' definition of "real" cross country.

The runners seemed unconcerned with event names or the true meaning of cross country. Those issues certainly weren't plaguing the mind of Maclay's Jana Stolting when she leaped immediately to the front of the field at the start of the high school girls' 5K race. Stolting ate up grass, mud, synthetic running track surface, and dirt indiscriminately to clock 18:59, finishing well ahead of runner-up Stefanie Kurgatt (19:47) of Maclay. The two were joined in the top five by their teammates Shelby Salimone (21:00), Kristen Sweeney (21:44), and Lindsey Sanders (22:29) in scoring a winning fifteen points--the best possible score in high school cross country. Aucilla Christian, the second-place team, was well back with 67 points, just ahead of third-place Florida State University School's 73 points.

The high school boys' 5K wasn't settled as early. The initial leader in that race was North Florida Christian's Daren Evans, who flew through the first quarter-mile in 75 seconds. When Evans's early exuberance had worn off, the lead fell to Dieumy Duclos of Godby, Terrell Bryant of Godby, and Robert Abellera of Florida State. Passing the half-way point in 8:50, Duclos moved out in front for good, winning the race in 17:37. Bryant beat out Abellera for second place, 17:55 to 17:59. The team title, however, went to Maclay School, as the Marauders put four runners in the top ten and beat second-place Godby 38 to 59, with Lincoln a few more points back at 67.

After the first two races had churned up the muddy sections of the course it was time for the middle school two-mile event. Jack Rutledge, runner-up at the Owl Run earlier this season, moved early into the lead. He was unchallenged and ran away from the field to win by over 50 meters in 13:11, with Alex Pittman of Christ Classical Academy second in 13:25. Team honors went to Maclay, scoring 25 points over Florida State's 32. No other schools fielded a full team in the race. In the middle school girls' competition,Kasey James of Wakulla ran 14:21 for the win, finishing well ahead of the battle for second place between Tamani Wilson (14:44) and Caroline Willis (14:46), both of Maclay. Maclay was the only school to field a full girls' team in the race, therefore winning the title with a perfect fifteen points.

For the high schools, the post-season begins the week after this meet, starting with FHSAA district competitions. District 1-1A will be hosted by Maclay on this course, or some muddy variation thereof.

Poole, Bartlett victorious at Holy Comforter

Maclay School's Lindsey Poole covered a three-kilometer course in 13:35 to run away with the girls' race at a middle-school cross-country meet at Tallahassee's Holy Comforter Episcopal School on Thursday, 22 October 2009. Poole finished almost a minute ahead of runner-up Liza Ray, also of Maclay, who ran 14:32. Maclay dominated the girls' race, capturing the first six places and putting all eight of their runners in the top ten.

In the boys 3K race, Bennett Harrell and Jared Grigas of Holy Comforter moved into the lead near the end of the first kilometer. Behind them, however, Cornerstone's Avery Bartlett was moving up through the pack. By the end of the second kilometer Bartlett had closed on Harrell and Grigas. During the third kilometer Bartlett began building his own lead, going on to win the race in 12:39. Harrell was second in 12:50, just ahead of third-place Grigas's 12:51.

Holy Comforter Episcopal School's cross-country course is in a meadow behind the school's campus on Fleischmann Road, formerly a cow pasture on Welaunee Plantation, the same property from which the nearby Miccosukee Greewnway was carved. A shallow ravine cuts the meadow, so runners climb and descend several slopes as they loop around the meadow. There are very few trees so the runners don't get much shade, but spectators can see almost the entire course, especially if they bring a pair of field glasses.
