30 June 2021 Tallahassee 100-Mile Race Calendar

This is the Tallahassee vicinity road-race schedule for 30 June 2021. If that's more than a week ago, the latest schedule is always available via this link:

This is a listing of upcoming races within 100 miles of Tallahassee, Florida, roughly the region in the map below. If a race isn't listed, I probably haven't heard of it, so post a comment and let me know about it.
Races are being abruptly canceled or rescheduled due to COVID-19, so if a race is farther
away than across the street, it is more important than ever to confirm that the event is
actually taking place. Also, please make sure that you are comfortable with whatever
hygienic protocols an event has in place. Be safe, and smooth trails!

Brock Granberg and Liliana Lewis roll at a rocky Freedom 5K

Back in Boulder, Colorado, Brock Granberg wrestled for Fairview High, recording a 31-7 record his senior year. Granberg also ran cross-country for Fairview, leading his team to fifth-place in the 2019 Colorado State Championships while running sub-17:00 for 5K on a course 6,000 feet above sea level. It was that distance running skill that was on display at Wakulla Springs, Florida on Saturday, 26 June 2021. That morning, Granberg won the eighth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K by nearly a minute, running 17:07. Liliana Lewis, a rising sophomore on the Wakulla High cross-country team, was first in the women's standings with a 21:12, coming in twentieth overall.

Brock Granberg

The Freedom 5K doesn't meet everyone's definition of cross-country, but it certainly meets someon's definition of cross-country. After starting on pavement in Wakulla Springs State Park, the course takes the runners into the forest on a two-rut road, heading for Cherokee Sink. After making a loop around the Sink near the halfway point of the race, the runners return the way they came. In the first years of the race, the road was characterized by the deep sand of Wakulla County. More recently, the road has been covered with gravel.

"The gravel made it difficult, but it was a good course," said Granberg.

Leonardo Canete

As the winner, he had every reason to like the route. Granberg was already leading the field entering the forest, and he only got farther ahead during the trip to Cherokee Sink and back. His winning 17:07 was the second-fastest mark recorded at the Freedom 5K during the eight-year history of the race.

Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete placed runner-up to Granberg, running 18:04. In the closing stages of the race, Jaden Callaghan ran down Mickey Moore to take third, 18:39 to 18:45. Callaghan is a rising junior on the Wakulla High cross-country team and Moore is a Tallahassee master runner.

Liliana Lewis

Callaghan was one of several Wakulla harriers in the race; the Freedom 5K is hosted by the Wakulla High cross-country team as a fund-raiser for the program. Liliana Lewis, the women's winner at 21:12, was another Wakulla Eagle in the race. Isabella Laughton, second in the women's division, is a future Eagle. Just out of the eighth grade at Wakulla Middle School, Laughton ran 21:56 in the Freedom 5K. Elizabeth Blitch and Marina Whitsell, each anticipating her senior year cross-country season at Wakulla, came in a few steps apart at 22:02 and 22:04, the third and fourth women in the race. Corrine Porcher was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 38th overall in 24:40.

111 athletes finished the 2021 Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Super runs for Nick Flatt and Macey Higgason at the Super Dad 5K

With traditions going back over a hundred years (and reinforced by the Hallmark corporation), Father's Day in the United States is always celebrated on a Sunday. Road races, on the other hand, are usually contested on a Saturday. When it comes to Father's Day road races, more often than not the athletic calendar wins, and the run takes place on Saturday--leaving Sunday morning free for dad to do something less strenuous, like sleeping late or eating a big breakfast.

Valdosta, Georgia's Super Dad 5K has gone with the Saturday tradition, with the most recent race run on 19 June 2021. Nick Flatt won the 3.1-mile event by nearly 400 meters, throwing down a 16:26. Macey Higgason took first in the women's standings, placing ninth overall in 2:55.

Overall winner Flatt is a veteran of the Valdosta State Blazer cross-country team; before VSU he ran for Spalding County High in Griffin, Georgia. Higgason, the women's champ, is only thirteen years old but already has more racing experience than many master runners. A resident of Allenhurst, Georgia, Higgason does most of her competing in and around the coastal region of the state.

Oscar Lopez Pech of Valdosta took second in the Super Dad 5K, running 17:46. Hahira, Georgia's Felipe Vilela was third in 20:14. The first master runner in the 5K was Ryan Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach. Winner of the 2019 Super Dad 5K, Kelly ran 20:41 in the 2021 race.

Kristen Kouns of Valdosta was the second woman at Super Dad, finishing thirteenth overall in 25:49. Valdosta's Melissa Roe was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 26:08.

The race started and finished in front of the Georgia Beer Company. 104 athletes finished the 2021 Super Dad 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

At the Melon Run, first time out means first place for Leonardo Canete, Mia Wiederkehr

"Is there anyone behind?" asked Leonardo Canete, as he raced through the streets of Monticello, Florida.

He asked again 600 meters later, as the finish line of the Melon Run 5K came into sight. Both times the answer was the same--no one. No one close, that is. There were actually more than 200 runners behind the Tallahassee master runner, but the closest was 200 meters back. More importantly, no runners were ahead of Canete. He went on to win Monticello's 42nd annual Melon Run on Saturday morning, 19 June 2021, running 18:06. Another Tallahassee athlete, Mia Wiederkehr, was the first woman in the race, placing fourteenth overall in 20:53.

Leonardo Canete

The race got started right at 8:15 AM on in sight of the Jefferson County Courthouse and the Monticello Opera House on West Washington Street, known to those who only drive through Monticello as US Highway 90. It was a cloudy morning with the occasional raindrop, the moisture coming from Tropical Storm Claudette several hundred miles to the west. Shortly after the start the race turned north onto Hickory Street, which took the runners to the end of the first half kilometer. Canete was leading before the race left Hickory Street.

He hit the mile mark in 5:35 with a 50-meter lead. On the way to the two-mile mark, Perry, Florida master runner Michael Rhodes moved into second. Meanwhile, Canete had stretched his lead to over a hundred meters. By the end of the third mile, it was no wonder that Canete was asking about his pursuers--they were that far behind. He finished the race with a 400-meter climb up the Water Street hill, then crossed the finish line first in 18:06. Rhodes was second in 18:49. Behind Rhodes, Wyatt Stafford and Tristan Lanasa dueled for third as they labored up Water Street. A recent alum of the Aucilla Christian Academy cross-country team, Stafford outkicked Tallahassee's Lanasa, both runners clocked in 18:57.

Michael Rhodes

Mia Wiederkehr, an alum of the Tallahassee Community College cross-country and track teams, was an early leader in the women's competition of the 2021 Melon Run.

"There was a girl ahead of me at half a mile," said Wiederkehr. "I caught her before the mile. After that I just ran with the men. I was 6:35 for the first mile."

Mia Wiederkehr

Leaving the rest of the women farther and farther behind, Wiederkehr continued on to run a winning 20:53. Just before she crossed the finish line, the next three women arrived at the bottom of the Water Street Hill, separated by only a few steps--Deanna McVay, Mary Fran Andree, and Stacie Elliott. Elliott overtook the other two women during the final climb to claim second in the women's standings with a 21:52, placing nineteenth overall. Andree was the first woman master and third female finisher, 21st overall in 21:56. McVay placed fourth in the women's division and 23rd overall in 22:02.

Deanna McVay, Stacie Elliot, Mary Fran Andree

233 athletes finished the Monticello Kiwanis' 2021 Melon Run 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.
