Tate Danford and Liliana Lewis run to Hell and back

2019 Tate's Hell And Back 5KLet's get one thing straight up front. The Tate's Hell And Back 5K in Carrabelle, Florida is named for the notorious Panhandle Florida swamp, Tate's Hell. The swamp itself is purportedly named after Cebe Tate, an early settler in Sumatra, Florida, who got lost in the swamp while hunting. The story had it that Tate finally blundered out of the swamp near Carrabelle, suffering from a rattlesnake bite, blood poisoning, hunger, exhaustion, and numerous other afflictions. "I've been in Hell," he said before dying.

I mention this to make clear that there is almost certainly no relation between Tate's Hell and the man who won the fourth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019--master runner Tate Danford. The race may not have been named for Danford, but he did take first, running 22:37. Liliana Lewis, the seventh-grade ace of the Wakulla Middle School girls' cross-country team, won the women's title, running from Carrabelle to Tate's Hell and back in 23:38, good for second overall.

Master runner David DeHaye took second in the men's standings, placing third overall in 24:05.

Sara Collins was the second woman in the race and fourth overall in 24:47. Collins had been the women's champ at the inaugural Tate's Hell And Back 5K.

Master runner Richard Metcalfe was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 24:52.

Nancy Lewis was the first woman master and third female finisher in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 26:31.

83 athletes finished the 2019 Tate's Hell And Back 5K. The Tate's Hell And Back 5K will return to Carrabelle for a fifth annual running during the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival on Saturday morning, 25 April 2020.

Khalil Randell gets a big win and Genevieve Printiss a close win at Nene Fest

Call it consistency.

Over four consecutive Saturdays, Khalil Randell ran four five-kilometer races, his performances never varying by more than a few seconds--18:08, 17:41, 17:42, and 17:53. All four races were in the Tallahassee, Florida area, and Randell won two of them. One of those wins was the fourth race on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019, the sixth annual Nene Fest 5K, where Randell finished half a kilometer ahead of the next runner. The women's competition at Nene Fest was much closer with Genevieve Printiss eking out a 20:23 to 20:25 win over Mia Wiederkehr.

Nene Fest is run in the Indianhead Acres neighborhood of Tallahassee, on the same USATF-certified course as Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Tallahassee Women's Distance Fest 5K. Randell hadn't seen the course before, but runner-up Michael Martinez had, having run the hilly route in several Women's Distance Festival races over the years. Martinez was the first master runner in the Nene Fest, covering the course in 19:50. David Welling was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 20:25.

Third and fifth overall belonged to Printiss and Wiederkehr. The top two women in the race both have competed for the Tallahassee Community College Eagles cross-country team. Ten-year-old Clifton Lewis took third on the women's side, coming in eleventh overall in 22:39. Stella Lewis, a seventh-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team, edged Michell Hadden for fourth in the women's standings, placing thirteenth overall in 22:58. Hadden was fourteenth overall in 22:59. Paula O'Neill was the first woman master in the race, the seventh female finisher and sixteenth overall in 24:21.

73 athletes finished the 2019 Nene Fest 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

William Carter and Cheryl Moore score a Perry sweep at the Colin Kelly 5K

2019 Colin P Kelly 5KThe Colin Kelly 5K is a race with many names. You might see it being called the Down Home Days Fitness Run 5K. Or the Sentinel Sprint 5K. Or the North Florida Community College 5K. But on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019, after the Colin Kelly 5K was run once again around the Madison, Florida campus of North Florida Community College, the name of the winner wasn't in question. That name was William Carter. The Perry, Florida master runner was first overall, running 21:02. Cheryl Moore, another Perry master runner, was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 25:22.

It wasn't Carter's first time winning the Colin Kelly race. He had won the race in 2015 and 2017, as well as finishing runner-up in 2018. There was a battle for that second spot in the 2019 race, with Cezar Araiza outkicking Isaias Lopez 24:27 to 24:28.

Master runner Julie Maultsby placed second in the women's standings, coming in seventh overall in 26:32. Tina Tucker was the third woman and eighth overall in 27:06.

21 athletes finished the 2019 Colin Kelly 5K. The race was Saturday's first event in Madison's annual Down Home Days Festival.

Alec Munger and Tracey Cole lead at Lake Park

Three months after Saturday morning, 27 April 2019, it's likely that Alec Munger will be starting his junior year cross-country season at Lowndes High in Valdosta, Georgia. But on 27 April 2019 itself, Munger was a few miles south of Valdosta in Lake Park, Georgia winning the inaugural Calvary 5K. Racing on roads rather than trails, Munger went the 3.1 miles in 17:15. Tracey Cole, a master runner from Pinetta, Florida, was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 23:21.

31:35 for Chris Haynes and 36:57 for Ann Centner, Rose City 10K champions

Thomasville, Georgia's 98th annual Rose Show and Festival concluded on Saturday, 27 April 2019. You could certainly see some beautiful blossoms at the Show, but you could also see many still on the bush at the Thomasville Rose Garden near Cherokee Lake. Even just strolling around town you could view blooms in yards and green spaces. If you wanted to cover more ground, you could have done your viewing while running Thomasville's 42nd annual Rose City Run, a 10K. Not everyone in the run was flower watching, though. Chris Haynes hardly had the time for it as he won the 6.2-mile race in 31.35. Nor was Ann Centner stopping to smell the roses as she raced to a women's title in 36:57, placing sixth overall.

Ann Centner, Chris Haynes

"We want to get going before it warms up," declared race director Dr. Jim Story as the runners gathered on Broad Street for the 8:00 AM start of 10K. "Right now it's perfect for running."

Dr. Story wasn't exaggerating. It was bright, calm, dry, and cool, with temperatures in the 50s. The consensus was that it was a good morning for a race, a consensus shared by Chris Haynes. The Tallahassee, Florida runner had other concerns, though.

Chris Haynes
Chris Haynes

"I'm worried," admitted Haynes. "There are some fast guys here. Nathan Haskins, and maybe someone even faster."

Haynes was a two-time Rose City Run champion, with wins in 2017 and 2018. But Haskins, a Thomasville runner, also had two Rose City wins to his credit, one in 2009 and another in 2015.. Right after the start of the race, Haskins took the lead. Haynes trailed a few steps back. The two left the rest of the field far behind.

Nathan Haskins, Chris Haynes

"Did you see the random surges he was putting in?" said Haynes. "He must have made twelve of them."

"We went through three miles in 15:00," continued Haynes. "The next two miles were slow, really slow. At five miles I could feel he was tired from setting the pace and from all the surges."

Nathan Haskins, Chris Haynes
Chris Haynes and Nathan Haskins

Racing side by side, Haynes and Haskins passed the five-mile mark in 25:33. Haynes made a move. Half a mile later, racing past MacIntyre Park, Haynes was over a hundred meters ahead of Haskins and pulling even farther away. A few minutes later Haynes was back on Broad Street crossing the finish line in a winning 31:35, the fastest of his three Rose City wins and the fastest winning time in the race since 2007, when four-time champ Alan Black went 31:21. Haskins took second in 32:50. Tallahassee triathlete Charlie Johnson was third in 35:14.

Charlie Johnson
Charlie Johnson

"For the third year in a row, from Tallahassee, our women's winner was Ann Centner," said Dr. Story at the awards presentation. "36:57. You're getting faster, Ann."

She is. In her previous Rose City outings, Centner ran 40:56 and 38:27. 36:57 isn't just her fastest mark at Rose City, it's her personal best and first time breaking 37:00.

Ann Centner
Ann Centner

"I know! I was happy!" said Centner.

In Thomasville, Centner lined up with three-time Rose City women's champ Sheryl Rosen, a Tallahassee lawyer. Rosen never mounted a challenge, though, as Centner led the women's field from start to finish. Rosen was second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 37:49. Brittney Barnes, another Tallahassee athlete, was the third woman and nineteenth overall in 40:45.

Sheryl Rosen
Sheryl Rosen

"I don't think I could PR in the mile right now, but 10K is a lot easier now," said Centner about her current state of fitness. "I remember my first 10K, after high school track season. That was awful. I'm doing a lot of quantity now. Six miles of work on the track on Tuesdays, and my long runs are even longer than in college."

Haynes is also logging a lot of mileage.

"I'm going to be trying to keep over a hundred miles a week in training," said Haynes. "I'm getting ready for the Grandma's Marathon."

Brittney Barnes

That's the 43rd annual Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota on 22 June 2019. Haynes won't be the only Rose City Runner there; Haskins is also entered. There aren't any marathons in the near future for Centner, though, or even much racing.

"After this I'm taking a little break," said Centner. "And then the Breakfast on the Track Mile in August."

Centner can be excused an intermission from competition. Over the last four weeks she's run the Springtime 10K, the Palace Saloon 5K, and the Rose City 10K--three races, three wins, and three personal bests.

Ali Kelly, Lourena Maxwell

Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the Rose City Run, covering the 10K in 38:17. Gibson was the ninth male finisher in the race and eleventh overall. Tallahassee's Lourena Maxwell was the first woman master, placing eleventh in the women's standings and 41st overall in 45:37.

397 athletes finished the 10K at the 2019 Rose City Run and another 144 completed the kids' mile. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed both races.

Pedrick Pond Park Trail

There’s no shortage of places to hit the trails on the east side of Tallahassee, Florida. There’s Tom Brown Park and Lafayette Heritage Park. There’s the Miccosukee Greenway and the Alford Arm Greenway. Between the two Greenways, there’s also Pedrick Pond Park.

Pedrick Pond Park Trail
Live Oak along the Pedrick Pond Park Trail

Leon County opened the park in 2006, stating in a press release that the county was “transforming several existing stormwater ponds into passive recreation facilities, including Pedrick Pond Park. These parks are designed for leisurely activities like walking and picnicking.” For walking or running, the park has a loop trail around Pedrick Pond. In this, it resembles Leon County’s Lake Henrietta Park, Martha Wellman Pond Park, Broadmoor Pond Park, and Okeeheepkee Prairie Park. In the Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department system, Lake Elberta Park was designed on a similar path-around-a-storm-water-retention-pond model.

The park is at the corner of Mahan Drive (US 90) and Pedrick Road. Leon County lists the address as 5701 Mahan Drive, but there's no entrance on Mahan Drive, or even a spot to pull over. Pedrick Pond Park shares parking with the Eastside Branch Library at 1583 Pedrick Road. The park is bounded on the west by Pedrick Road, on the north by Mahan Drive, on the east by the Vineyards (a subdivision), and on the south by a natural gas pipeline. The Eastside Branch Library, opened in 2011, is south of the pipeline.

Pedrick Pond Park Trail
Trail on the east side of Pedrick Pond

Pedrick Pond itself is roughly what folks in the swimming pool business call "kidney shaped." If your kidneys were shaped like Pedrick Pond, though, you'd be looking for a transplant. Most of the trail around the pond is crushed oyster shell, the same material used for much of the Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course, but the west side of the loop is a concrete sidewalk along Pedrick Road. A lap around the pond is almost exactly 1,320 yards, or three-quarters of a mile (just over 1.2 kilometers for the metrically inclined).

For runners, you'd think this would be a great spot for repeats, the kind of workout you'd do on a track. Not really. For one thing, the circuit includes two bridges, a 40-yard bridge on the sidewalk along Pedrick Road, and a 90-yard bridge on the north side of the loop. These are handsome bridges, decked with plastic planking that should outlast real wood. They are also narrow, only about five feet wide. Imagine that the clock is running and you're trying to run fast across one of these bridges when someone is else is pushing a baby stroller across. Or when a family has paused to look over the railing at the turtles.

Pedrick Pond Park Trail
The longer of two bridges on the Pedrick Pond Park Trail

You also might arrive for a workout and find part of the trail underwater. The bridge on the north side of the trail was added to the park after that part of the trail became part of the lake during several high water episodes. The Tallahassee weather was wet enough during 2018 that the approaches to both bridges were occasionally flooded, as well as a stretch of trail on the east side of the loop.

But it's a good place to log a few leisurely miles or take a stroll. There are several sanitation stations along the loop for dog walkers. There are benches if you just want to pause and look at the water. Bird watchers have observed more than 80 species at Pedrick Pond. For anyone who wants to eat near the pond, there are picnic tables. Pedrick Pond Park has neither water nor rest rooms, but both are available at the Eastside Branch Library.

Pedrick Pond Park Trail
Trail on the south side of Pedrick Pond

For travelers, the Pedrick Pond Park Trail is located less than two miles west of Exit 209 on Interstate 10. I'm not recommending it as a destination, but I've detoured farther while traveling to find a trail to stretch my legs.

The championship at Godby was the climax of the 2019 LCS middle school track season

For Leon County Schools, the middle school track and field season is four weeks long. Four Thursdays, four athletics meets, then good-bye. In 2019 the fourth and final meet was the LCS League Championship, held in Tallahassee, Florida at the Godby High track on Thursday afternoon, 25 April 2019. For the eighth-graders, it was not only their last LCS track meet of the season, it was their last LCS middle school track meet ever.

Good-bye.

But the first event of the meet, the girls' 1600, went to a seventh-grader, Skye Williams of Montford. Williams turned in the fastest time of the season in the girls' four-lapper, running 5:44.85. Swift Creek eighth-grader Stella Lewis took second in 5:54.27, and Deerlake eighth-grader Maya Tang was third in 5:59.67.

Wyatt Townsend came to the starting line of the boys' 1600 as the defending champion in the event. In fact, the Deerlake eighth-grader had never lost a 1600-meter race at a Leon County Schools event, with a seven-race winning streak that went back to the beginning of the 2018 season. The streak continued. Townsend edged Swift Creek eighth-grader Connor Edwards for the league title, 4:52.15 to 4:53.03. Fairview seventh-grader Patrick Koon also went sub-5:00, placing third in 4:59.16. Townsend, Edwards, and Koon each posted their fastest 1600 performance of 2019 season.

The Championships were held at Lincoln High School in 2005 and 2007.
Godby High School hosted the Championships from 2008 to 2019.

Makayla Caldwell of Fairview won the girls' 100-meter hurdles for the second week in row, taking the League Championship race in 16.21. Cecilia Dixon of Swift Creek was second in 16:53, and Alexandria Kennedy of Fairview third in 17.03.

The boys' hurdle race belonged to Juvon Pettway of Swift Creek. Pettway went 15.02 for the win, outleaning Le'Kel Manna of Nims, runner-up at 15.08. Cade Swart of Deerlake placed third in 15:49.

Danae Baker of Raa had won the girls' 100-meter dash at the first two meets of the season but missed the race in the third meet. At the championship meet, Baker was present at the starting line and first across the finish line, taking the title in 13.01. Griffin's Teona Hutson edged Naudia Williams of Montford for second, 13.36 to 13.37.

Sheldon Richardson of Nims ran the fastest 100-meter dash of the 2019 LCS season, 11.65, to win the boys' race. Zhantavious Mills of Cobb was second in 12.03, just ahead of a battle for third. Keyon Brown of Fairview got that place with a 12.09, while Centel Deshazier of Cobb and Travis Morris of Nims tied for fourth at 12.10.

Channey Richardson of Cobb capped a perfect season in the girls' 400 by winning her fourth one-lap race in four outings, taking the championship in 62.90. Madison McNeill of Deerlake was second in 63.29, and Javionah Bolden of Nims third in 63.68.

Ja'Marie Clemons of Cobb posted a 52.02 in the boys' 400, the fastest mark in the event of the 2019 LCS middle school season. His Cobb teammate, Malek Jackson, was runner-up in 53.02, with Rhyder Poppell of Montford third in 54.94.

The 400 was followed by the first relay of the evening, the girls' 4 x 100-meter relay. The Cobb girls passed the stick once around the track in 52.50, their best time of the season and fast enough to win the championship in the event. The Raa girls were second in 52.93, with Fairview a close third in 53.06.

The Nims boys had won the 4 x 100 in each of the three previous meets, but at the LCS Championship the Cobb boys had the edge, going 46.94 for the title. The Nims team was second in 47.68, and Raa squeaked by Swift Creek for third, 49.01 to 49.03.

Alima Hemenway had skipped the third meet of the LCS season after winning the girls' 800 at the first two meet. Taking a week off didn't seem to hurt the Swift Creek eighth-grader at all, though. Hemenway won the championship race, outkicking Swift Creek's Stella Lewis 2:41.55 to 2:41.57. Montford sixth-grader Mariona Heartsfield was third in 2:43.13, with Deerlake's Maya Tang fourth in 2:45.70.

Cobb's Ja'Marie Clemons hadn't had much time to rest after winning the boys' 400 before he was rushed onto the starting line of the 800. Not much time, but enough. Clemons won the two-lap race in 2:09.65, finishing just ahead of the 2:10.12 posted by runner-up Justin Greenwood of Fairview. Their times were the two best marks of the 2019 LCS season. Swift Creek athletes Connor Edwards and Corey Stavres took third and fourth, running 2:17.07 and 2:17.70.

27.55 was the best girls' 200-meter dash of the 2019 LCS season, and 27.55 was the winning time that Gabria Cottrell of Raa ran in that event at the Championship Meet. Naudia Williams of Montford was second in 27.82, with Fairview's Alexandria Kennedy a close third in 27.90.

Going into the boys' 200 at the Championship Meet, three sprinters had each won the event once during the season--Rico Watkins of Fairview, Sheldon Richardson of Nims, and Malek Jackson of Cobb. Watkins wasn't at the Championship, leaving Richardson and Jackson to race for the title. Richardson took it, running 23.75. Jackson edged Travis Morris of Nims for second, 24.31 to 24.33, with Keyon Brown of Fairview a close fourth in 24.38.

In the first three meets of the 2019 LCS season, the Fairview girls were a perfect three-for-three in the 4 x 400 relay. But at the fourth meet, the Championship, the Raa girls stunned the field with a 4:24.79, the fastest time of the season by more than five seconds. Fairview settled for second at 4:38.75, with the Swift Creek team third in 4:40.66.

In the boys' 4 x 400, three teams went under 4:00. Swift Creek was the fastest of those, taking first in 3:50.43. Cobb was second in 3:51.89, and Fairview third in 3:53.33.

Girls' 200-meter champ Gabria Cottrell of Raa earned her second title of the meet in the girls' high jump, leaping a winning 1.42 meters. Leah Homan of Deerlake was second with a mark of 1.37 meters. Three athletes tied for third at 1.27 meters--Nehemiah Jenkins of Nims, Gabrielle Powell of Fairview, and Daphne Story of Fairview.

Errol Quallo of Fairview won the boys' high jump for the third week in a row, equaling his season-best mark of 1.62 meters. Swift Creek's Juvon Pettway and 800/400 champ Ja'Marie Clemons of Cobb tied for second at 1.57 meters.

Fairview eighth-grader Alexandria Kennedy finished an undefeated season in the girls' long jump with a 4.89-meter win in the event. Ausunti Herring of Deerlake took second with a mark of 4.68 meters, and Raa's Danae Baker leaped 4.59 meters for third.

Asanti Stewart of Nims sent the six-pound shot 11.10 meters, more than a meter farther than any other athlete at the Championship, to win the girls' shot put. Raven Hall of Deerlake placed second with a mark of 10.03 meters, and Ka'Niya Fuller of Cobb was third at 9.83 meters.

Jordan Clark of Nims ended the 2019 LCS season with his fourth win in four outings in the boys eight-pound shot, taking the championship with a 13.09-meter hurl. It was the third time during the season that Clark had gone beyond thirteen meters; a mark that no other athlete had been able to touch. Kamari Strong of Fairview was second at 12.66 meters, and Alex Henry third at 11.76 meters.

When the final event was over, the Fairview girls had 77 points, making the Falcons the first-place school in the girls' team standings. Swift Creek was second in the nine-team field, just ahead of the 66 points posted by third-place Raa.

The boys' team standings were close, but Nims outscored Cobb by one point to take the championship, 90-1/2 to 89-1/2. Swift Creek edged the Fairview boys for third, 74 to 73-1/2.

The scores were tallied, the Championship Meet was over, and so was the season. Some of the athletes would be back in 2020, but the eighth-graders would have moved on, perhaps to compete for their high schools. 2019, though, was no longer living contests on the track and in the field. The season was fading memories and records on scraps of paper.

Daniel Phillips and Mary Thompson raced well at Run For The Ranch

On Saturday morning, 20 April 2019, the Rose City 10K in Thomasville, Georgia was just seven days away. But in Moultrie, Georgia--just a few miles north of Thomasville on US 319--there were athletes who couldn't wait a week to race ten kilometers. They took to the Moultrie streets in the fourth annual Run For The Ranch 10K, and the fastest of them was Moultrie's Daniel Phillips, who won the 6.2-mile race in 46:36. Another Moultrie athlete, Mary Thompson, repeated as first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 53:12.

Bo Moore of Camilla, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing as the overall runner-up in 49:40. Chula, Georgia's Amy Hightower was the top woman master in the 10K, coming in seventh overall in 1:02:31.

Nine athletes finished the 2019 Run For The Ranch 10K.

Chad Northcutt of Quitman, Georgia won that 3.1-miler by over 200 meters running 20:54. Doug Yarbrough of Moultrie took second in 21:50. Moultrie's Alfredo Esposito was the first master runner in the 5K, placing third overall in 22:28.

Moultrie master runner April Mathis was the first woman, placing eighth overall in 26:35. Katie Cato of Doerun, Georgia finished second in the women's standings and ninth overall in 27:31. Tampa, Florida athlete Hayley Tolbert edged Shana Murphy of Moultrie for the third women's spot, both runners clocked in 27:48. Tolbert and Murphy were eleventh and twelfth overall.

24 April 2019 Tallahassee 100-Mile Race Calendar

This is the Tallahassee vicinity road-race schedule for 24 April 2019. If that's more than a week ago, the latest schedule is always available via this link:

This is a listing of upcoming races within 100 miles of Tallahassee, Florida, roughly the region in the map below. If a race isn't listed, I probably haven't heard of it, so post a comment and let me know about it.
