When Gulf Winds Track Club's Palace Saloon 5K returned to the streets of Tallahassee in 2021 following a hiatus induced by COVID-19,
Stan Linton and
Katie Sherron were there. Linton was the first overall male and Sherron the first overall female. They repeated those performances on Saturday morning, 23 April 2022, at the 47th annual Palace. Linton won the 3.1-mile race in 14:49, his second sub-15:00 performance on the course from Messer Fields to the Palace Saloon. Sherron covered the 5K in 17:39, heading the women's standings and placing seventh overall.

Stan Linton |
Linton's performance was almost identical to his 2021 Palace six months earlier. In both races he went to the front right after the start. In both races he had a commanding lead by the two-kilometer mark. In both races he continued to draw away, unchallenged, as he sped toward the finish line at the Palace Saloon. Their was a slight difference at the finish line--in the 2022 race, Linton's winning time was 14:49, just four seconds more than in 2021.
Maybe there was a little more headwind in 2022.
 |
Vincent Fetchero and Ryan Ziskinder |
Behind Linton,
Ryan Ziskinder and, Vincent Fetchero, and
Adam Wallenfelsz fought for the runner-up spot. During the second half of the race Ziskinder and Fetchero had dropped Wallenfelsz, making it a two-way dispute. Both athletes were outfitted in their high school cross-country kits--Ziskinder wearing Martin County (c/o 2021) colors, and Fetchero wearing the uniform of Bishop Kenny (c/o 2019). Just past four kilometers, the two crested Michelob Ridge and started the long downhill stretch to the finish line together. During the descent, Ziskinder surged away from Fetchero, then held on to take second in 16:00. Fetchero was third in 16:06. Wallenfelz ended the race fourth in 16:30.
Charlie Johnson was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 16:57.
Immediately following Johnson over the finish line was the first woman in the race,
Katie Sherron. Perhaps there wasn't more headwind in April than there had been in October after all, because Sherron's 17:39 was actually a second faster than she had run in the previous Palace. And where Sherron had won the 2021 Palace women's title by over 500 meters, in the 2022 race her margin of victory was more than 700 meters.
 |
Katie Sherron |
The 2022 race was also Sherron's first Palace as a master runner.
In the race for the second women's spot,
Brittney Barnes was holding the position on the homestretch, chased by
Annabelle Wiktorski. Wiktorski, a seventh-grader at Montford and the reigning county champion in middle school cross-country, was actually gaining on Barnes during the final rush to the finish. But Barnes was able to hold off the charging youngster, 20:42 to 20:45. Barnes and Wiktorski were 45th and 46th overall.

Brittney Barnes |
468 athletes finished Gulf Winds Track Club's 2022 Palace Saloon 5K. This was significantly up from the 284 finishers at the 2021 Palace, indicating the sport's continuing recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
