Pauncho Hufstetler and Chrissy Lee forge memories at the Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial Run

In 2013, Bainbridge College chemistry professor Dr. Eric Dueno directed at race on the college's Bainbridge, Georgia campus, the Purple Heart 5K. The race became an annual event, and at the second annual Purple Heart Run, a 10K was added to the program.

After Dr. Dueno passed away, a race was held in his honor in 2017, the Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial 5K. The race became an annual event, and at the second annual Dr. Eric Dueno Memorial Run, a 10K was added to the program.

At Bainbridge's Boat Basin Park on Saturday morning, 29 September 2018, master runner Pauncho Hufstetler won that first Dueno 10K, running 40:30. Chrissy Lee was the first woman in the 6.2-mile race, placing sixth overall in 56:11.

Bryan Gensits was runner-up in the 10K, and Kevin Malfa took third in 49:08.

Michelle Comeaux was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing seventh overall in 60:00. Niki Cox and Liv Warren were third and fourth in the women's standings, both athletes clocked at 62:51. Cox and Warren were tenth and eleventh overall.

Brookwood harriers Jack Saussy and Emma Szwarc excel at the Live Better Pink Run

3rd annual Live Better 5K Pink RunBrookwood School's cross-country team must not have scheduled a meet on Saturday, 29 September 2018. Why? Because that morning Brookwood sophomore Jack Saussy was on the streets of Thomasville, Georgia winning the third annual Live Better 5K Pink Run, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:56. Another Brookwood sophomore, Emma Szwarc, was first in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 23:32.

Saussy had finished placed second in the 2017 Pink Run, but returned a winner in 2018. Alex Russell was runner-up in the 2018 race, going 21:51. At 22:27, Law Carter placed third. Stephen Sullivan was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 23:07.

Saussy finished nearly a minute ahead of the next runner, but Szwarc was only a few seconds ahead of the second woman in the race. That runner-up athlete was Morgan Long, who placed thirteenth overall in 23:39. Elise McPherson edged Abbey Johnson for third in the women's division, 23:42 to 23:44. McPherson and Johnson were fourteenth and fifteenth overall. Sandi Damron was the first woman master and twelfth female finisher, 37th overall in 27:21.

Xander Peacock keeps on rolling at the Ram Run

Rutherford RamIn 2016 Fort Walton Beach High swept the team titles at Rutherford High's Ram Run Cross-Country Meet. In 2017 it was South Walton's turn to sweep. And on Saturday morning, 20 September 2018, the runners of Choctawhatchee High took their turn, taking top team honors in both the girls' race and the boys' race. Choctawhatchee frosh Deanna Bottino was the first individual in the girl's 5K running 20:45. Blountstown junior Xander Peacock notched his fourth win of the 2018 season in the boys' 5K with a 16:59.

The girls' race started at 9:15 AM. Deanna Bottino of Choctawhatchee may not have led from the outset, but she certainly led at the finish line, entering the chute in a winning 20:45, more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner. Lauren Locke, a senior at Marianna, took second in 22:15. Frosh runners Chloe Fernander and Dannika Kilgore contributed to the Choctawhatchee cause, placing third in 22:16 and fourth in 22:30.

Rutherford senior Darby Bennett was fifth in 23:52, but after that came a wave of Choctawhatchee green. Choctaw sophomore Alison Boyle was sixth in 24:01, Choctaw frosh Meghan Yagle seventh in 24:17, Choctaw sophomore Amanda George eighth in 24:21, and Choctaw senior Sofia Louah ninth in 24:46. After putting seven runners in the top ten, the Indians had a near-perfect score of 21 points and first place in a field of seven teams. Led by Bennett, the Rutherford girls were second with 60 points. Third-place North Bay Haven scored 83 points behind the thirteenth-place, 26:05 performance of sophomore Abby Gregory.

  9. 24:45.42, Sofia Louah (Choctawhatchee) 12
  10. 25:19.49, Kathryn Underhill (Mosley) 12

Were you impressed when Deanna Bottino won the girls' race by over 300 meters? Then you'd have been stunned when Xander Peacock won the boys' race by more than 400 meters. If the race had been run on a regulation outdoor track, Peacock would have lapped the field and then some. After finishing, the Blountstown Tiger junior had time to take a drink and change his shoes before the next runners arrived, three athletes in Choctawhatchee green--sophomore Francesco Paone (2nd, 18:33), sophomore Christian Sterman (3rd, 18:46), and senior David Santarosa (4th, 18:48).

North Bay Haven frosh Kaden Passey was fifth in 18:58, followed by the Choctawhatchee's fourth and fifth scorers--frosh runners William Armbruster (6th, 19:07) and Gregory Soloviev (7th, 19:12). With that, Choctawhatchee had a mathematically unbeatable 22 points and the boys' team title. Peacock's Blountstown Tigers were second with 54 points, and North Bay Haven edged Mosley for third, 91 to 96.

Droze and Dietrich duel at the Victory Run

On Saturday morning, 29 September 2018, a whitetail deer was eating acorns laying on the Goose Pond Trail in Tallahassee’s Tom Brown Park. After a while, the doe ambled off into the brush. There would be a lot of fitness traffic on the trail later in the morning, including the 54 athletes running the inaugural Victory Run 5K. Gary Droze was the fastest of the runners trampling the acorns, winning the race in 18:18. Alyssa Terry was the first woman in the 5K, finishing fifth overall in 19:57.

Gary Droze leads Kurt Dietrich

The Tallahassee office of the National Weather Service calculated that September was the hottest month so far in 2018, even warmer than July and August. The athletes in the Victory Run got a small break, though, because most of the Goose Pond Trail was in the shade. The length of the paved trail through Tom Brown Park is almost exactly 2,500 meters. For runners, that’s a challenge to race from one end of the trail (say, the Connor Boulevard end) to the other (the Weems Road end) and back, just to see what one can do for 5,000 meters. Of all the 5K races that have been run on the trail or in Tom Brown Park, though, none of the courses had been USATF certified until the Victory Run. The athletes in that race could be assured of getting a legitimate time on an accurate course.

According to the deer, this didn’t improve the flavor of the acorns.

The race was fifteen minutes late getting started, fifteen minutes during which the sun rose higher and the air grew warmer. The deer could have taken a more leisurely breakfast. But at 8:15 AM, the race was under way.

Kurt Dietrich, Will Springer, Gary Droze

Gary Droze, the Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach, set the early pace, accompanied by Kurt Dietrich and Will Springer. Nine years earlier, Dietrich had run cross-country for Lincoln High, located next to the Connor Boulevard end of the Goose Pond Trail. Racing on the trail was homecoming for him. Springer, a member of Trinity Catholic’s middle school cross-country team, had never raced 5K before. Even though he couldn’t stay with the leaders, Springer hung on to finish sixth overall in 20:17 in his debut five-kilometer performance.

At the halfway point Droze still held the lead, with Dietrich a step behind. Jim Halley was in the third position, 40 meters behind the leaders.

“It didn’t change much after that,” said Droze.

The positions didn’t, but the margins did. Droze dropped Dietrich to win by close to a hundred meters in 18:18. Dietrich took second in 18:41, and Halley was third in 18:56. Master runner Duane Evans finished fourth in 19:49.

Alyssa Terry
Alyssa Terry

Women’s champ Alyssa Terry finished a few steps behind Evans in 19:57.

“I finally broke twenty minutes!” said Terry. Three weeks earlier she had come close to that barrier at the Sickle Cell 5K, running 20:01. That had stood as her best mark until the Victory Run.

Monica Judd was the first woman master in the Victory Run and the second female finisher, placing eighth overall in 22:35. Shemaiah Thames placed third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 30:59.

Tang and Townsend fly to victory at the Falcon Invitational

Week five of the Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country season saw the athletes in Phipps Park on Thursday afternoon, 27 September 2018, for the first ever Falcon Invitational. Deerlake's Maya Tang won the opening event, the girls' 3K, running 11:28, while the Swift Creek girls took the team title. In the boys' 3K Wyatt Townsend ran 9:50 for his fourth win of the season, leading Deerlake to first place in the team standings.

Maya Tang
Maya Tang

It was the first year of the Falcon Invitational, and it almost didn't happen. Hosted by Fairview Middle School, the meet was scheduled to take place at the school. However, construction at Fairview made that impossible. Where could you run a pair of three-kilometer middle school races? Well, Gulf Winds Track Club had staged a 3K at Phipps Park as part of the Miller Landing Madness. So the Falcon Invitational moved from the south side of town to the north side of town, more than ten miles.

On the day of the races, the weather turned threatening.

But as ominous as the skies looked, only a light rain was falling when the girls' race got started, though. Deerlake eighth-grader Maya Tang had already seen the course just over a month earlier, running 12:31 in the Miller Landing Madness 3K. 600 meters into Falcon Invitational girls' 3K Tang was already leading, more than 40 meters ahead of the next group of runners--Swift Creek eighth-graders Stella Lewis and Paige Churchill, and Deerlake seventh-grader Leah Kiros. Tang increased the margin after that, finishing the race with a lead of more than a hundred meters and a winning time of 11:28. It was her third win of the season. Paige Churchill, who had won the other two girls' races during the season, took second in 11:53. The next two places went to Swift Creek seventh-graders, with Stella Lewis third in 12:07 and Ava Jones fourth in 12:13. Skye Williams, a Montford seventh-grader, was a close fifth in 12:15, and Leah Kiros was sixth in 12:25.

The remaining two scorers for the Swift Creek Wolves were seventh-grader Elizabeth Kessler (9th, 12:45) and sixth-grader Lilly Walker (18th, 13:11), giving the team a winning total of 34 points. Led by Williams, Montford took second with 45 points. Kiros' Deerlake Bucks were third with 59 points.

Swift Creek eighth-grader Connor Edwards and Fairview seventh-grader Patrick Koon had both raced the Phipps Park 3K course before, dueling for the win in the Miller Landing Madness 3K. Edwards had come out slightly ahead that day, 10:37 to 10:39. But in the boys' 3K at the Falcon Invitational, it was Deerlake eighth-grader Wyatt Townsend who took the first lead. Townsend got ahead at the start, and stayed ahead, finishing the race with a 140-meter lead in 9:50. Fighting for second, Edwards and Koon had a rematch of their Miller Landing Madness duel. The outcome was closer, but the same--Edwards edged Koon for second, 10:09 to 10:10.

Xander Peacock and Jazzmyne Degolyer win at Blountstown

TigerWhen twelve schools, twenty teams, and 184 athletes showed up in Blountstown, Florida's Sam Atkins Park for a high school cross-country meet, you'd think it would have a snappier name than "The Blountstown Home Meet." Couldn't it have been called the Calhoun County Classic? Or the Tiger Trot? The River City Invitational?

Blountstown High certainly earned part of the name in the boys' race. The Blountstown Tigers took the team title in that race, putting four runners in the top ten and scoring 28 points, while Tiger junior Xander Peacock won the 5K in 17:04. Scoring 32 points, Port Saint Joe had the top girls' team, and Altha School eighth-grader Jazzmyne Degolyer was first in the girls' 5K at 23:00.

Competition opened that Wednesday afternoon, 26 September 2018, with the boys' 5K. It wasn't much of a race, thanks to Xander Peacock. The Blountstown ace finished the five-kilometer event more than half a kilometer ahead of the next runner, covering the course in a winning 17:04. Zack McFarland, a Port Saint Joe junior, took second in 19:07. Behind McFarland, North Bay Haven frosh Kaden Passey edged Blountstown senior Enrique Nandho for third, 19:41 to 19:46.

Blountstown next three scorers were juniors Saul Puente (5th, 20:03) and Dartanion Hope (9th, 20:58), and sophomore Elier Pais (11th, 21:17), giving the Tigers 28 points and first place in the field of ten teams. Passey's North Bay Haven team took second with 59 points. Led by junior Grady Escobar (1th, 21:13), Franklin County was third with 71 points.
