Norton and Mills star at the Ram Run, but South Walton sweeps team honors

South Walton High swept both team titles, boys' and girls', at Rutherford High's seventh annual Ram Run High School Cross-Country Meet, held Saturday morning, 16 September 2017, at the Callaway Recreation Complex in Callaway, Florida. Makennah Mills, a senior at Northview High in Dothan, Alabama, won the girls' 5K in 20:02. South Walton senior Connor Norton took first in the boys' 5K with a 17:10.

Makennah Mills had spent most of her high school career at Prescott High in Prescott, Arizona before transferring to Northview her senior year. Prescott is more than a mile above sea level, while the Callaway Recreation Complex has an elevation of just thirteen feet. You can't get much lower than that without wading. When the Ram Run high school girls' 5K started at 9:15 AM, relative humidity in the area was close to 70%--a figure unheard of in Prescott. But if Mills was handicapped by the thick, damp flatlander atmosphere, it didn't show. Building up a lead of nearly 100 meters, Mills won the race in 20:02, the second-fastest winning time in the seven-year history of the Ram Run. It was her second victory of the season. South Walton frosh Patasha Bryan finished runner-up in 20:25. Mosley senior Ella Swigler took third in 20:37. It was the final Ram Run appearance for Swigler, who finished second in 2015 and third in 2016.

Junior Madison Peele (5th, 22:09) and frosh Aris Short (6th, 22:49) also placed in the top ten for South Walton. Frosh Emily Kuni (12th, 23:36) and sophomore Merileigh Camaret (15th, 23:54) completed South Walton's scoring, giving the Seahawks a winning total of 35 points. Junior Summer Williams (4th, 21:42) led Florida State University School to a score of 57 points and second place in the field of seven teams. Port Saint Joe was third with 86 points, led by their top runner Shamario Cole (7th, 22:58), a senior.
