Militsa Mircheva's 16:54 highlights a Seminole sweep at Covered Bridge

Florida State University SeminolesOver the years, Florida State hasn't been to Boone, North Carolina for each of Appalachian State's Covered Bridge Open cross-country meets. The Seminoles have been to Covered Bridge most years, though, and when they visit, people tend to notice. That was certainly the case on 1 September 2017, when Florida State took the team titles in both the women's 5K and the men's 8K, while FSU's Militsa Mircheva won the women's race in 16:54. Tennessee-Martin's Edwin Kurgat won the men's 8K in 25:53, the only win that the Seminoles didn't take back to Tallahassee.

The meet was run on the Don Kennedy Trails at the Appalachian State University Farm Fields with the opening race at 5:00 PM--the women's 5K. Running her first cross-country race for Florida State, Bulgarian Olympic marathoner Militsa Mircheva turned in a 16:54--the fastest time ever run in the women's 5K at the Covered Bridge Open. No other woman had ever come close to breaking 17:00 at Covered Bridge; Mircheva had done so in spite of finishing over a hundred meters ahead of the next runner. Ann Asipan, a Tennessee-Martin alumna competing unattached, placed second in 17:25. Megan Mooney of Florida State finished third in 17:33.

Florida State put two more runners in the top ten, Emily Edwards (5th, 18:00) and Mackenzie Landa (8th, 18:10). Seminole Addison Coggins (12th, 18:18) completed Florida State's scoring, giving the team a mathematically unbeatable total of 25 points and first place in a field of twelve teams. Behind top ten finishes from Emily Fedders (9th, 18:15) and Phylissa Greeley (10th, 18:16), hosts Appalachian State placed second with 68 points. Southern Indiana, led by Melina Gryschka (6th, 18:03), was a close third with 74 points.

The men's race started at 5:45. For the first time since 2008, the men competed in an 8K event--shorter than the NCAA championship distance of 10K, but longer than the 6400 meters that the men had raced at Covered Bridge from 2009 through 2016. Tennessee-Martin's Edwin Kurgat didn't seem to mind the extra distance, scooting across the finish line 50 meters ahead of runner-up David Barney of Florida State. Barney covered the course in 26:03, finishing just ahead of the 26:10 clocked by Simeon Roberts. Roberts, formerly of East Tennessee State, was competing unattached.

After Seminoles Bryce Kelley (5th, 26:15) and Tyson Murray (9th, 26:26) had crossed the finish line, Florida State had three runners in the top ten. However, Southern Indiana also had three top-ten athletes--James Cecil (4th, 26:14), Austin Nolan (6th, 26:15), and Darin Lawrence (10th, 26:27). Southern Indiana put Screaming Eagle Nathan Hall (12th, 26:28) across the finish line before the next Seminole, but Florida State answered with Michael Callegari (15th, 26:34) and Stan Linton (16th, 26:35). Once Linton was home, Florida State had 43 points and the Seminoles' eighth Covered Bridge men's title. Just four points back, Southern Indiana was second with 47. Led by Ryan Ford (7th, 26:22), Tennessee-Martin was third in the eleven-team field with 89 points.
