Alec Munger and Alice Smoot headline the Saint John Road Race

Saturday morning, 27 October 2018, was seven days after Alec Munger placed third in the GHSA Area 1-7A Cross-Country Championship in Conyers, Georgia. It was seven days before the Lowndes High sophomore would race with his team in the GHSA State Cross-Country Championships in Carrollton, Georgia. It was also the morning that Munger won the fifteenth annual Saint John 5K Road Race in his hometown of Valdosta, Georgia, running 16:57. Valdosta master runner Alice Smoot won the Saint John Road Race women's title for the second time in three years, placing eighteenth overall in 22:51.


Tanner Reid, a first-year Valdosta State University student and recent alum of the Perry High cross-country team, took second in 17:23. Armarius Patterson, a senior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, was third in 18:00. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in twelfth overall in 20:25.


Pavo, Georgia master runner Pollyanna Bass was the second woman in the race and 21st overall in 23:23. Emma Campbell of Hahira finished third in the women's standings and 24th overall in 23:34.


172 athletes finished the 2018 Saint John Road Race 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Antonio Marchi turns a 1:08:25 half marathon in Dothan

In 1958, a new road opened in Dothan, Alabama, a highway that went entirely around the city. The "ring road" allowed travelers from any direction to pass by Dothan without getting caught in city traffic. Now called Ross Clark Circle, the road is lined with businesses, encircling Dothan with a permanent traffic jam.


Ross Clark Circle is just over thirteen miles around, which means that two laps is a bit more than a marathon. It seems to have taken six decades for someone to notice this. But instead of a two-lap marathon, Ross Clark Circle was used as the course for a one-lap half marathon. On Saturday morning, 27 October 2018, Antonio Marchi won the inaugural Dothan Half Marathon, looping the city in 1:08:25. Master runner Olga Elliott was the first woman in the race, placing sixteenth overall in 1:42:53.


Marchi finished the race more than two miles ahead of the next runner. Thirty years old, Marchi has already had a long athletic career, running distance at Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky then going on to compete on the Berea College cross-country team from 2006 to 2009. After taking a degree at Berea, Marchi earned a masters at Morehead University. In 2015 he joined Glenmary Home Missioners, pursuing brotherhood in the Catholic Church. Earlier in 2018, Marchi raced on Glenmary's winning relay team at the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati.


Behind Marchi, Daniel Hamilton took second in the Dothan Half Marathon, running 1:22:17. Jason Teitloff placed third in 1:27:14. Scott Bowers was the fastest master runner in the half marathon, finishing seventh overall in 1:33:33.


Dana Cody was second to Elliott in the women's standings, coming in 30th overall in 1:46:59. Master runner Kathy Gannon was the third woman and 31st overall in 1:47:35.


203 athletes finished the 2018 Dothan Half Marathon. Another 148 completed an associated 5K run. Finishers in both races received a peanut medal ("Because Dothan is the Peanut Capital of the World").

Lydia McRae's 17:40 outraces everyone at The Great Race 5K

At the sixth annual running of The Great Race in Perry, Florida, Lydia McRae didn't run quite as fast as she had the previous year. Still, just like in 2017 and 2015, McRae ran faster than anyone else in the race. So on Saturday morning, 27 October 2018, McRae ran a winning 17:40 for five kilometers in the streets of Perry, notching her third victory in The Great Race 5K. Ethan Carter, a sophomore on the Lowndes High cross-country team, was first in the men's standings, placing second overall in 18:23.


Second in the men's division went to another schoolboy athlete, Joshua Agner, who was third overall in 21:41. Timothy Walker was the third man and fourth overall in 21:53. The top master runner in the race was Tae Yu, seventh in the men's standings and eighth overall in 23:21.


Andrea White was the first woman master and second female finisher, fourteenth overall in 25:45. Master runner Cheryl Moore was the third female finisher and sixteenth overall in 26:14.


69 athletes finished the 2018 running of The Great Race 5K. Second Wind Race Timing of Coatesville, Pennsylvania timed and scored the race.

No one was ready for Yaeger and Savery at the Race For Readiness 5K

On Saturday morning, 27 October 2018, the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend held its annual Race For Readiness 5K for the fifth time. It was the second time that the race was run in Tallahassee, Florida's Tom Brown Park. And it was the first time that Nick Yaeger won the race. A Florida State University graduate student and former standout on the Simpson College cross-country team, Yaeger covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:21, finishing nearly 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Joi Savery was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 24:35.


Kurt Dietrich, who had come in sixth in the 2017 Race For Readiness 5K, took second in 2018, running 19:47. Daniel Petronio was third in 22:51. Ramsay Sims was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 23:21.


Brook Gerbrandt was the women's runner-up and eleventh overall in 25:32. Sol Pomeroy was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 27:44.


119 athletes finished the 2018 Race For Readiness 5K. All proceeds of the race were devoted to disaster relief for the victims of Hurricane Michael in Florida's Big Bend region. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
