Tim Goldy and Donna Garcia roll to wins in the Ball Drop 5K

On Friday, 31 December 2021--the last evening of the year in Panama City Beach, Florida--the top spot in the Ball Drop 5K came down to a duel between two Panhandle runners, Tim Goldy of Freeport and Bilal Mohammad of Panama City. Goldy prevailed on the 3.1-mile course in Frank Brown Park, 18:01 to 18:02. In the same race, the women's title was decided between two Colorado athletes, with Colorado Springs master runner Donna Garcia taking first in 21:23 and Molly Rogers of Lakewood second in 21:42.

Goldy and Mohammad were followed across the finish line by Nathan Holmes, a senior on the North Bay Haven cross-country team. Holmes was third in 18:29. Ty Schumann, a high school sophomore from Michigan, took fourth in 19:04. Dan Station of Panama City was the first master runner in the race, coming in eighth overall in 21:08.

Garcia's 21:23 gave her the women's title and put her ninth overall. At 21:42, women's runner-up Molly Rogers placed eleventh overall. The third woman in the race, Rebecca Haines, was twelfth overall in 21:53. Ruby Douglas, a junior on the Nolensville High cross-country team, was fourth in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 22:45.

225 athletes finished the 2021 Ball Drop 5K.

Tallahassee's top 15K road times in 2021

When it comes to 15K performances on USATF-certified courses in Tallahassee, Florida during 2021, the first one was the fastest one. Back on 17 January 2021, Jake Rogers, a sophomore on the Leon High cross-country team, outran everyone in the Gulf Winds Track Club 15K, including his frosh teammate, Patrick Koon, winning the race in 51:15. No one bettered that mark at Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K, so Rogers' performance stands as Tallahassee's top 15K time of 2021.

Jake Rogers, Pat Koon

Trevor Sununu's winning time at Turkey Trot, 51:59, ranks second, while Patrick Koon's 52:12 at the GWTC 15K is third. Mickey Moore posted Tallahassee's fastest 15K for the year by a male master runner, running 58:08 at Turkey Trot.

But the fastest time for a master runner overall was 56:29, the mark turned in by Dr. Katie Sherron in the Turkey Trot 15K on 25 November 2021. Sherron not only led the women in 2021, but you'd have to go back to 1988 to find a better performance. The 2020 women's leader, master runner Laura DiBella, was second on the women's list with the 61:53 she ran to win the GWTC 15K.

With vaccines on the way, it looks like road racing may return to Tallahassee in 2021, including 15K road races. The Gulf Winds Track Club 15K is already scheduled for 16 January 2021. Gulf Winds Track Club's next Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K, should it happen, will be on 25 November 2021. Results from those races would be included in any 2021 rankings, as well as those from any other 15K meeting these criteria:
  • The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
  • The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
  • The race has to have published results
  • I have to see the results
Here are Tallahassee's 2021 lists for the road 15K, each going 25 deep.

Experience didn't hurt Chris O'Kelley or Katie Sherron at the 10-Mile Challenge

There were shadows moving through the fog in Tallahassee, Florida's Oxbottom Manor neighborhood on Saturday morning, 4 December 2021. Those shadows were runners, and they were racing in Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Ten-Mile Challenge. The fastest shadow was Chris O'Kelley, who won the race in 59:44. Master runner Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 64:24. It was O'Kelley's fifth Ten-Mile Challenge; over the years he had collected three top-ten finishes before nabbing this win. Sherron was also a veteran of the race; this was her sixth women's title.

Chris O'Kelley

The course was two laps around a circuit through Ox Bottom Manor, a neighborhood on the north side of Tallahassee. The fog was thick when the race started at 8:00 AM, and remained thick for the first lap around the course--thick enough to hide the leader, master runner Leonardo Canete, from the rest of the field. It was Canete's first Ten-Mile Challenge. By the end of the first lap, the fog had thinned enough that O'Kelley, running in second, could see Canete ahead of him. It also helped that O'Kelley had narrowed the gap on Canete.

During the second lap, O'Kelley took over the lead and started to open his own gap. By the time he crossed the finish line with a winning 59:44, he was about 400 meters ahead. Canete took second in 61:15. Dr. Ryan Truchelut was third in 64:19.

Leonardo Canete

Truchelut had to fight for his third-place finish, though. Katie Sherron held that position with 400 meters to go before being overtaken by Truchelut. Sherron may have ended up fourth overall in 64:24, but she was first woman in the race by nearly two kilometers. Sherron had also won the women's division at the Ten-Mile Challenge in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Her 64:24 was her fastest run yet at the Challenge. To find a faster women's performance in the race, you'd have to go back to 2007, when Sheryl Rosen went 64:04. But the Challenge only moved to the Ox Bottom Manor course in 2010, so Sherron's time stands as the fastest women's mark on the current course, narrowly beating the 64:25 run by Allison Eagen in 2010.

Melanie Leitman took second in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 72:44. Jillian Heddaeus was the third female finisher, coming in fourteenth overall in 75:20. Heddaeus had been the women's champ of the 2019 Challenge.

22 December 2021 Tallahassee 100-Mile Race Calendar

This is the Tallahassee vicinity road-race schedule for 22 December 2021. If that's more than a week ago, the latest schedule is always available via this link:

This is a listing of upcoming races within 100 miles of Tallahassee, Florida, roughly the region in the map below. If a race isn't listed, I probably haven't heard of it, so post a comment and let me know about it.
Races are being abruptly canceled or rescheduled due to COVID-19, so if a race is farther
away than across the street, it is more important than ever to confirm that the event is
actually taking place. Also, please make sure that you are comfortable with whatever
hygienic protocols an event has in place. Be safe, and smooth trails!

Carson Purvis and Sara Hamblin ring victory bells at Freedom Park in the Jingle Jog 5K

Wrapping up the racing year for distance running in Valdosta, Georgia, Carson Purvis won the sixth annual Jingle Jog 5K on Saturday morning, 18 December 2021. Purvis ran the 3.1-mile Freedom Park course in 17:50. Sara Hamblin was the first woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 25:30.

Just weeks before the race, Purvis had wrapped up his senior year of cross-country at Gilmer High in Ellijay, Georgia. His 17:50 at the Jingle Jog put him nearly three minutes ahead of the runner-up, Ryan Kelly. A Lake Park, Georgia master runner and coach of the Valdosta High cross-country team, Kelly had won the Jingle Jog in 2019 and 2020. In the 2021 race, he edged Chad Northcutt for second, 18:55 to 18:57.

Sara Hamblin's 25:30 put her across the finish line some 70 meters ahead of the next woman in the race, Jamie Brown. Brown was eighth overall in 25:53. Ella Burnett and Sienna Persaud were third and fourth in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 26:16 and eleventh overall in 26:18. Both athletes are on the cross-country team at Valwood School, where Burnett is a sophomore and Persaud a frosh.

Hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes Parks and Recreation Authority annually since 2016, the Jingle Jog 5K was known as the Ugly Sweater 5K from 2016 to 2019. VLPRA adopted the Jingle Jog name in 2020.

47 athletes finished VLPRA's 2021 Jingle Jog 5K. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.
