Tallahassee's top 15K road times in 2018

Several Florida cities host 15-kilometer road races on USATF-certified courses. Pensacola, Tampa, and even Jacksonville has one. Rather uniquely, though, Tallahassee has two--the Gulf Winds Track Club 15K in January, and the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K in November.


The two races couldn't be more different. The GWTC 15K is a junior race to the GWTC 30K, and it's run on a hilly, mostly unpaved course. The Turkey Trot 15K is the flagship race of the Tallahassee Turkey Trot, and the course is run on well-maintained suburban streets with a few slopes. You'd think that the fastest time in town each year would always come from the Turkey Trot. That isn't always the case, though. In 2015, Sukhi Khosla went 50:11 on a wet, sloppy course at the GWTC 15K, faster than anyone managed ten months later at the Turkey Trot.

Performances went as expected in 2018, though. Stan Linton posted a winning 48:28 at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K on Thursday morning, 22 November 2018, the fastest time for that distance run in the city during the year. Sheryl Rosen had Tallahassee's fastest 15K on the women's side for 2018, the 56:45 she ran at the Turkey Trot.


Tallahassee's best 15K performance for the year by a master runner was 56:49, turned in by David Graf at the Turkey Trot. The top woman master at 15K on the Tallahassee roads during 2018 was Dana Black, who ran 69:10 at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot.

The 15K performance lists for 2018 are dominated by Turkey Trot times, but it's worth noting that the women's champ at the GWTC 15K, Megan Churchill, was third in the women's rankings at 66:08. Could Churchill have run faster than that at Turkey Trot? Fast enough to move up in the rankings? The point is moot; during the weekend of Turkey Trot, Churchill and the rest of the Chiles High girls' cross-country squad raced at the Nike Cross-Country Southeast Regional in Cary, North Carolina where they won the team title and qualified for Nike Cross Nationals. It was the first time a girls' team from Florida had ever earned a trip to NXN.

Record keeping for 2019 will start at the Gulf Winds Track Club 15K on Saturday morning, 20 January 2019. After that, I'll be looking at the results of the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 15K on Thursday morning, 28 November 2019. I'll also consider performances from any 15K race meeting these criteria:
  • The race has to be in Tallahassee (anywhere in Leon County is fine)
  • The race has to be run on a USATF certified course
  • The race has to have published results
  • I have to see the results
