A winning start to the season for Patrick Koon and Kate Drummond at Cecil Field

New World Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida probably was a swamp at one time. The ground has the spongy feeling of land that remembers long years of never being quite dry. During World War II, the land became part of Cecil Field Naval Air Station. In 1975 Fiddler's Green, an eighteen-hole golf course, was built. New owners renamed the site New World Golf Course, then added disc golf in 2015. high school cross-country arrived in 2017 as the Cecil Field Pre-Season Classic, thanks to Bishop Snyder coach Richard Fannin. On Friday evening, 27 August 2021, the meet moved into the regular season and became the Cecil Field Summer Classic.

Over 1600 athletes crossed a finish line in the races at the 2021 Classic, including 196 in the high school girls' elite 5K. Of those nearly 200, the first was Buchholz junior Kate Drummond, who won the race by 70 meters in 18:39. Leon sophomore Patrick Koon was first among 228 finishers in high school boys' elite 5K, cruising the course in a course and meet record 15:15.

The girls' elite race started promptly at 7:15 PM. A flurry of athletes with more optimism than judgment set the early pace. Two kilometers into the race, fatigue had cleared them away and Zoe Pustilnik, a Spanish River senior, was leading. Kate Drummond was just off Pustilnik's right shoulder.

During the third kilometer, Drummond took over, opening a three-second gap. The gap grew. With 600 meters to go, Drummond was ten seconds ahead of the next runner, Timber Creek senior Amber Schulz. Pustilnik was a few steps back in third. Those positions held till the finish line, where Drummond was first in 18:39. It was her first high school cross-country win. Schulz was runner-up in 18:55. Pustilnik held off Episcopal frosh Lucrezia Gowdy to take third, both runners clocked in 19:02.

In the team standings, Bolles was first in the field of twenty schools, led by the seventh-place finish of Bulldog junior Elizabeth Csikai. Csikai ran 19:17. Bolles remaining scorers were frosh Elizabeth McClure (14th, 19:42), forsh Estella Bruneau (20th, 19:53), senior Maddie Popp (24th, 20:03), and sophomore Leila Bata (31st, 20:11). Those five gave the Bulldogs 93 points and the win. Drummond's Buchholz Bobcats were second with 128 points. Leon High, led by Lion junior Lily Moore (5th, 19:09), scored 139 points to take third.

With daylight fading from clouds and sunset, the high school boys' elite 5K got underway at 7:45 PM. 400 meters from the starting line, Patrick Koon took the lead. Nick Carpenter, a Trinity Prep senior, tucked in behind Koon. Carpenter remained a step behind in Koon's wake through two kilometers, but Koon began to pull away during the third kilometer. With 600 meters to go, Koon was 15 seconds ahead.

Meanwhile, Matthew Stratton, a Saint Johns Country Day senior, had caught up with Carpenter. Fighting for second, Carpenter and Stratton began to eat into Koon's lead. As the finish line approached, Stratton left Carpenter behind and charged after Koon.

But the Leon sophomore was too far ahead. Koon made it to the finish line in 15:15, five seconds ahead of Stratton's 15:20. Both runners under the previous course record. Carpenter nabbed third in 15:26.

Viera senior Michael Toppi nabbed fourth in 15:38. Toppi was one of two Viera athletes in the top ten, the other was junior Cameron Raney, tenth in 15:59. Before the elite races, the girls' varsity 5K and the boys' varsity 5K had the course. A light rain fell during the girls' varsity race. By two kilometers Oakleaf junior Sierra Barrera had moved up through the field to take the lead. During the third kilometer, Rockedge sophomore Malinda Underwood and Fletcher frosh Tessa Massa moved up four places and pulled even with Barrera. The rest of the race was Barrera, Massa, and Underwood fighting for first, farther and farther ahead of the rest of the field. It came down to the final kick. Underwood edged Barrera for the win, both running 20:19, with Massa a hair behind in 202:20.

It was a Bulldog vs. Bulldog battle in the team standings, with the Bolles Bulldogs and the Melbourne Bulldogs fighting for first. Bolles had no runners in the top ten, but scorers Kavya Patel (13th, 22:00), Kate Mark (20th, 22:25), Emily Loftin (27th, 22:40), Sofia Petrucelli (29th, 22:44), and Lilly Lenger (36th, 23:19) gave their team 109 points. However, Melbourne also had 109 points, thanks to Caroline Bergstrom (7th, 21:33), Aubrey Orcutt (15th, 22:05), Katelyn Apotsos (26th, 22:38), Mehek Niwas (34th, 22:59), and Emma Hanus (43rd, 23:31). Under NFHS rules, a tie score is resolved by comparing the sixth runner on each team--"the team with the best sixth-place finisher shall prevail." In this case, the best sixth-place finsher was Bolles eighth-grader Katherine Libby who placed 41st in 23:30, giving her team first place. Stanton, led by senior Alexandria Richmond (5th, 21:27), was third with 174 points.

James Snipes, a Ridgeview senior, was the early leader of the boys' varsity 5K. He was shadowed for more than three kilometers by Rockledge junior Josiah Price. When Price faded another Rockledge junior, Christian Calderon, took over the pursuit. Calderon couldn't catch Snipes, either. Snipes expanded his lead over the final kilometer to win the race in 16:47. Calderon was second in 16:59. Mandarin junior Gavin Nelson was third in 17:17.

Leonardo Canete and Clifton Lewis storm to victory on the Red Bug Trail

Clouds and rain dominated Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, 28 August 2021, part of the mass of moisture that blanketed the Southeast United States--a blanket centered on Hurricane Ida. The rain soaked the paths in Phipps Park, including the course for the fourth and final race of Gulf Winds Track Club's 2021 Summer Trail Series, the Red Bug Trail 7K.

"This is a very technical course," remarked a course marshal, stepping around a puddle.

In trail running parlance, "technical" refers to the probability of falling down and getting hurt.

Leonardo Canete

Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete overcame the technical aspects of the Red Bug Trail on that wet Saturday and won the race by nearly a minute, running 34:23. Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis took first in the women's standings, placing sixth overall in 38:10. It was the second Trail Series win for Canete and the third for Lewis.

Iffy weather cut down on attendance at the Trail Series finale, and lightning delayed the start. But the storm let up, and the athletes were under way at 6:10 PM. Canete was first into the woods, and then began the job of trying not to slip and fall on the muddy, winding paths. He succeeded well enough to finish first in 38:10. The fight for the runner-up spot was a close affair, but Brad Busboom prevailed over Kyle Kraeft, both runners clocked in 35:03. Like Canete, Busboom also has two career wins in the Trail Series.

Clifton Lewis

A few hundred meters after the start, Clifton Lewis was the first woman into the woods, just two seconds ahead of Amelia Bryant. Bryant had beaten Lewis in the second Trail Series event, the Swamp Forest Trail Race on 10 July 2021. At Red Bug, though, once they were in the woods Lewis stretched her two-second lead into a gap of more than two minutes, taking top woman honors in 38:10. Bryant was the second woman to splash across the finish line, tenth overall in 40:28. Averi Lewis finished third on the women's side and eleventh overall in 40:52. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 22nd overall in 46:48.

72 athletes finished the 2021 Red Bug Trail Race. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the run.

Kelly Davis and Wyatt Townsend win their duels at Dueling Summits

An early-season staple of high school cross-country in Tallahasse, Florida from 2006 to 2019, the annual Dueling Summits Meet was absent from the schedule in 2020, a casualty of COVID-19. But the fixture returned to Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 28 August 2021, drawing over 500 athletes in five races. Chiles senior Kelly Davis took first in the high school girls' 5K with a 21:23, but it was the Wakulla girls who nabbed the team title, scoring 25 points. Wyatt Townsend, a Chiles junior, won the high school boys' 5K in 16:32, leading the Timberwolves to first in the team standings with 20 points.

The Phipps Park hills, the "Summits" in the meet's name, hadn't become any less steep during the hiatus since the 2019 event. On the other hand, they hadn't grown any more steep, either. Kelly Davis, meanwhile, had gotten tougher. Davis had run 23:02 in the 2019 Duelling Summits; in 2021 she raced nearly two minutes faster than her sophomore mark, recording a winning 21:23. Another Chiles senior, Ella Hodges, had run 23:23 in the 2019 meet. Hodges improved that to 21:30 in 2021, finishing runner-up to Davis. Similarly, Wakulla senior Clara Alford, third in 22:05, had run 24:01 in 2019.

Wakulla frosh Isabella Laughton was fourth in 22:17 and Wakulla sophomore Liliana Lewis was fifth in 22:21. Wakulla's remaining two scorers also cracked the top ten--senior Marina Whitsell was seventh in 22:53 and sophomore Taylor Pfeifer was eighth in 23:07. With that, the Wakulla girls had 25 points and victory--their first Dueling Summits win in the history of the meet.

Chiles was second in the eleven-team field with 49 points. Lowndes took third with 64 points, led by junior Madison Parker. Parker was eleventh in 23:42.

Ben Kirbo and Wyatt Townsend have been racing against each other in cross-country for years, going back to at least their middle school days when Kirbo was on the team at Montford and Townsend at Deerlake. By the 2021 Dueling Summits meet, though, both were running for the same team, Chiles High, where Kirbo was a senior and Townsend the junior. Townsend may have been a year behind Kirbo in school, but at Dueling Summits he was nearly a hundred meters ahead of Kirbo in the high school boys' 5K, winning the race in 16:32. Kirbo placed second in 16:50. Another Chiles senior, Filippo Reina, took third in 17:26. Reina has also been racing Townsend and Kirbo since middle school.

The remaining Chiles scorers also cracked the top ten--Timberwolf sophomore Jackson Rowe was sixh in 17:50 and junior Owen Franklin was eighth in 18:22. The first five Timberwolves totaled a mathematically unbeatable 20 points, giving Chiles first place in the seventeen-team field. It was the fourth win in the last five Dueling Summits meets for the Chiles boys.

Traveling to Tallahassee from Valdosta, Georgia, Lowndes High took second with 57 points. Lowndes put two runners in the top ten, but the fastest of those was senior Matthew Herndon, fifth in 17:50. Wakulla came from the next county south to take third with 126 points. Wakulla's top runner was Jaden Callaghan, a junior, seventeenth in 19:25.

Montford Middle School opened their cross-country season on Thursday, 26 August 2021, at the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Invitational. Eighth-grader Annabelle Wiktorski raced with the Montford team that evening. Less than 48 hours later, Wiktorski had traded her Montford uniform for a Red Hills Running Club kit and was racing in the middle school girls' 3K at Dueling Summits. The change of colors didn't slow her down; Wiktorski won the Dueling Summits race in 12:21. Another Red Hills Runner, fifth-grader Charlotte Sikes, finished runner-up in 12:27. Sikes had won the middle school girls' race at the FSUS Invitational a week earlier. Andi Vilardo of Red Hills placed third in 12:45. Like Wiktorski, seventh-grader Vilardo had raced in the ARPXC Inivtational on Thursday, competing for Montford.

Haley Heitmeyer, another Montford seventh-grader competing for Red Hills, placed fourth in 13:04. Sixth-grader Chloe Molen, who had won the ARPXC Invitational for Deerlake, took fifth for Red Hills in 13:13. Having swept the top five, the Red Hills girls won the team title with a perfect score of 15.

Maclay seventh-grader Ellie Mazziotta was sixth in 13:15, leading her team to second place with 48 points. Trinity Catholic was third in the seven-team field with 102 points. Trinity's top runner was sixth-grader Danielle Sasso, nineteenth in 15:34.

Chloe Molen and Jonathan Kiros lead a Deerlake sweep of the ARPXC Invitational

Leon County Schools opened its middle school cross-country season in Tallahassee, Florida on Thursday evening, 26 August 2021 at Apalachee Regional Park with the ARPXC Invitational. The Deerlake Middle School Bucks won, well, everything. The Deerlake girls placed first in their three-kilometer race, scoring a near perfect 18 points aided by the win of Chloe Molen, a Buck sixth-grader. Molen ran the 3K course in 12:37. Deerlake seventh-grader Jonathan Kiros won the boys' 3K in 11:28, leading his team to a winning score of 49 points in that race.

The leaders at 800 meters

A pair of brief rainshowers had lowered temperatures below 80°F at the Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course, but the summer heat had already begun to return when the girls' 3K started at 6:00 PM. At the 800-meter mark the first six runner in the race were all wearing Deerlake green, and the first of those six was Chloe Molen. It was Molen's first race as a Buck, and she made the most of her debut. Molen opened a gap of the field during the middle kilometer of the race, reaching the two-kilometer mark sixteen seconds before the next runner. Deerlake runners still held the first four positions, with Abbey Griffin, London Mellen, and Kyra Swart leading the pursuit of Molen. However, two Montford seventh-graders-Annabelle Wiktorski and Andi Vilardo--had moved into fifth and sixth, challenging the Deerlake pack.

Over the final kilometer, eighth-graders Griffin and Mellen began to close on Molen. Griffin got to within three seconds of the leader, but Molen was across the line first in 12:37, winning her debut race for Deerlake. Griffin took second in 12:40 and Mellen was third in 12:44. Wiktorski of Montford placed fourth in 12:51, interrupting the procession of Deerlake finishers.

But the Deerlake parade resumed, with seventh-grader Kaia Ables fifth in 12:53 and eighth-grader Kyra Swart seventh in 13:21. Their fifth scorer home, the Bucks had a mathematically unbeatable eighteen points and their first win of the season.

Montford was second in the nine-school field, scoring 47 points behind Wiktorski and Vilardo (6th, 12:55). Swift Creek placed third with 97 points, led by their top finisher, eighth-grader Emily Bullough (12th, 13:50).

68 athletes representing nine schools finished the girls' 3K.

Jonathan Kiros is in his second season of cross-country, and his experience showed in his tactics. Kiros ran a patient race in the boys' 3K, running just off the lead for the first half of the race. Early in the second half, he made his move.

"Around the one-mile mark I realized I could pick it up, and I executed," said Kiros.

By two kilometers Kiros was in front, a few steps ahead of Swift Creek eighth-grader Asa Swope. Through the woods and up the Wall, the final hill on the course, Kiros opened a gap on Swope.

"I knew all the tangent points on the course," said Kiros. "And used them."

Kiros crossed the line in 11:28, earning his first win in a Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country race. Swope narrowed Kiros lead during the final 200 meters and finished second in 11:31. Another Swift Creek eighth-grader, Thoren Knispel, was third in 12:01. Jack Koon, a Fairview seventh-grader, moved up two spots during the third kilometer to take fourth in 12:06.

Deerlake seventh-grader Hagen Perdue was eighth in 12:31, giving the Bucks two runners in the top ten. However, Swift Creek, Fairview, and Montford also each had two top-ten finishers.

Deerlake's advantage came outside the top ten, with sixth-grader Tyler Stout eleventh in 12:36, seventh-grader Camden Williams thirteenth in 12:42, and seventh-grader Robert Carver sixteenth in 13:01. With Carver's finish, the Bucks had 49 points and the ARPXC Invitational win.

Fairview, led by Jack Koon, edged Montford for second, 66 to 67. Montford's top finisher was seventh-grader Trent Parsons, fifth in 12:08.

Leon County Schools' 2021 middle school cross country schedule

Seven meets. Count 'em! Seven.

That's what Leon County Schools has scheduled for its midddle school cross-country runners as the 2021 season opens in Tallahassee, Florida. It's the greatest number of meets ever on the League schedule, as if to make up for the COVID-shortened five-meet season in 2020.

There are some things to miss about that 2020 season. For the first time, the middle school harriers raced on the Alford Greenway, in Killearn Estates, and at the Florida State University SportsPlex. The athletes won't be returning to Alford or Killearn in 2021, but LCS scheduled a meet for the SportPlex on Friday, October 1. Some old venues that were absent from the 2020 schedule are back on the slate in 2021. A season opener on the Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course is scheduled for Thursday, 26 August 2021. The LCS harriers will be back at Fort Braden for the Fort Braden Run on Thursday, 2 September 2021. The Gretchen Everhart Invitational, perhaps the oldest middle school meet in Florida, returns to Gretchen Everhart School after a one-year hiatus on Wednesday morning, 15 September 2021.

Three meets from 2020 made the 2021 schedule, the Mustang Invitational at Montford, the Falcon Invitational, and the LCS League Championship Meet. The Mustang Invitational takes place at Montford Middle School on Tuesday, 7 September 2021. Fairview Middle School is still looking a venues for the Falcon Invitational on Thursday, 23 September 2021. The League Championship Meet returns to Apalachee Regional Park on Thursday, 7 October 2021, the twelfth year in a row that ARPXC has hosted the Championship.

Outside of the Leon County Schools League, Holy Comforter Episcopal School will host two meets on their home course--the Crusader Cross-Country Classic on Thursday, 30 September 2021, and the Tallahassee Open on Tuesday, 12 October 2021. Both of Holy Comforter's meets also include a one-mile race for elementary school athletes. Several other meets in the Tallahassee area have middle school races scheduled--the FSUS Invitational on Saturday, 21 August 2021; the Dueling Summits Meet on Saturday, 28 August 2021; the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Thomasville on Thursday, 2 September 2021; the Big Bend Invitational on Saturday, 4 September 2021; The Bear Invitational in Crawfordville on Saturday, 25 September 2021; the Bearcat Invitational in Bainbridge on Saturday, 9 October 2021; and the FSU Invitational on Friday, 15 October 2021. Not more racing than you could do, but certainly more than you should do.

Smooth trails!
