At the Fairgrounds Abbey Griffin and Asa Swope take prizes in the Falcon Invitational

The North Florida Fairgrounds in Tallahassee was an unfamiliar site for a Leon County middle school cross-country meet, but the winners were familiar enough. There, on Thursday, 23 September 2021, at the fourth annual Falcon Invitational, Deerlake eighth-grader Abbey Griffin won the girls' 3K for the second time in the 2021 season, running 12:07. Asa Swope picked up his fourth win in the boys' 3K, where the Swift Creek eighth-grader ran 11:05. The Deerlake girls scored 21 points for their fifth straight win of 2021, and the Montford boys won for the third week in a row, putting up 47 points.

In 2018, Fairview Middle School hosted the first Falcon Invitational at Phipps Park. The meet moved to the FSU Rec SportsPlex in 2020. The 2021 Invitational moved again, this time to a venue almost on the doorstep of Fairview--the North Florida Fairgrounds. It was a new location for Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country, and a new location for Tallahassee distance running in general. Two decades earlier the Tallahassee Turkey Trot had finished at the Fairgrounds, but no race had ever been run entirely on the property. At the fourth annual Falcon Invitational, the Fairgrounds was the scene of two races.

The first was the girls' 3K. The starting gun fired at 6:00 PM. After the first kilometer, Deerlake eighth-grader London Mellen led the race, followed by Montford seventh-grader Annabelle Wiktorski. Also wearing Deerlake green, sixth-grader Chloe Molen and eighth-grader Abbey Griffin were a few steps further back. Of the first four races of the season, Molen, Mellen, Griffin, and Wiktorski had each won one. At the Fairgrounds one of them could break that tie.

The leaders lost Molen during the second kilometer. Mellen still led with 500 meters to go, but Griffin had passed Wiktorski. Griffin grabbed the lead during the final 200 meters and charged for home, getting there first with a 12:07. Mellen was second in 12:11 and Wiktorski third in 12:12. Andi Vilardo, a Montford seventh-grader, placed fourth in 12:27.

The next three places belonged to Deerlake Bucks. Eighth-grader Kyra Swart was fifth in 12:41, Molen was sixth in 12:43, and sixth-grader Honesty Daniel was seventh in 12:46. Their fifth runner across the finish line, the Deerlake girls had 21 points and first place in a field of eight teams. It was the fifth win of the season for the girls in green.

Led by Wiktorski, Montford placed second in the teams standings with 39 points. Raa scored 99 points, taking third. Raa's top runner was eighth-grader Kennedy Bell, twelfth in 13:55.

The boys got their turn to race on the Fairgrounds at 6:30 PM. Swift Creek eighth-grader Asa Swope and Jonathan Kiros, a Deerlake seventh-grader, had split the first four races of the season, each winning two. At the Falcon Invitational, the fifth meet of 2021, they were sharing the lead after the first kilometer of the boys' 3K. By the two-kilometer mark, Swope had opened a gap. During the third kilometer the gap only grew wider, as Swope went on to win in 11:05. Fairview seventh-grader Jack Koon moved into third during that final kilometer and had started to close on Kiros, but the Deerlake seventh-grader held on to finish runner-up in 11:30. Koon was third in 11:31. Kingsley Knispel, a Swift Creek eighth-grader, placed fourth in 11:32.

Montford seventh-grader Gavin Poucher was fifth in 11:34. For perhaps the first time ever in a Leon County Schools middle school cross-country meet, ten schools had full teams in the boys' race. Led by Poucher's performance, Montford placed first among those ten teams, scoring 47 points. The other Mustang scorers were eighth-grader Matthew Hauser (8th, 11:44), seventh-grader Trent Parsons (10th, 11:58), and eighth-graders Jackson Beener (11th, 12:00) and Edward Bass (13th, 12:15).

Behind Swope and Knispel, Swift Creek was second with 59 points. Kiros and the Deerlake Bucks were a close third with 62. Scoring 78 points, Koon and host school Fairview placed fourth.

22 September 2021 Tallahassee 100-Mile Race Calendar

This is the Tallahassee vicinity road-race schedule for 22 September 2021. If that's more than a week ago, the latest schedule is always available via this link:

This is a listing of upcoming races within 100 miles of Tallahassee, Florida, roughly the region in the map below. If a race isn't listed, I probably haven't heard of it, so post a comment and let me know about it.
Races are being abruptly canceled or rescheduled due to COVID-19, so if a race is farther
away than across the street, it is more important than ever to confirm that the event is
actually taking place. Also, please make sure that you are comfortable with whatever
hygienic protocols an event has in place. Be safe, and smooth trails!

Lillee Tang and Patrick Koon lead a Leon sweep of the Buccaneer Bash

North Bay Haven High School BuccaneersThe Leon High Lions cross-country squad ventured out of their Tallahassee, Florida lair on Saturday, 18 September 2021, travelling to Panama City for North Bay Haven's fifth annual Buccaneer Bash. Call it a business trip, because the Lions certainly took care of business. First, Leon won the girls' 5K race, putting up a winning 33 points after Lion juniors Lillee Tang and Lily Moore took the first two places in the race, running 19:40 and 19:50. The boys' 5K had a similar outcome. Leon sophomore Patrick Koon won it in 16:10 and Leon junior Jake Rogers placed second in 16:36 while their team score a mathematically unbeatable 26 points.

The girls' 5K was scheduled for 8:00 AM, racing on the grounds of the old Bay Dunes Golf Course. Thirteen schools had athletes in the race. Eleven of those schools had entered full teams. The defending champion of the Buccaneer Bash, North Bay Haven junior Lakyn Carmichael, was on the starting line. None of them could touch Lillee Tang or Lily Moore that morning. The two Leon girls were the only runners in the race to go under 20:00 that morning, Tang throwing down a winning 19:40 and Moore going 19:50 on a soggy course. Charlene Elizondo, a junior racing for host school North Bay Haven, placed third in 20:08.

After Tang and Moore, Leon had two more Lions in the top ten. Stella Lewis, a junior, placed sixth in 21:05. Another Leon junior, Mallory Robinson, placed ninth in 21:23. Leon's remaining scorer was frosh Madi Sims, fifteenth in 22:33. Once Sims had finished, the Leon girls had 33 points and first place in the team standings. Elizondo and the North Bay Haven girls placed second with 50 points, just better than the 55 scored by third-place Choctawhatchee. Choctawhatchee's top runner was Chloe Fernander, a senior, fourth in 20:42.

  10. 21:23.80, Hannah Jacobs (Providence Christian) 9

The course was no drier for the boys' 5K than it had been for the girls' 5K. If anything, it was a bit sloppier after 98 girls had churned up the wet spots. This doesn't matter to cross-country runners, for whom mud is a kind of baptism. It didn't matter to Patrick Koon, who tore around the 5K circuit in 16:10, taking first by about 130 meters. It was the third win in a row for Koon, following victories at the Cecil Field Summer Classic and the Big Bend Invitational.

Jake Rogers of Leon finished runner-up in 16:36, the only athlete in the boys' race other than Koon to crack 17:00. Kaleb Hollins, a Choctawhatchee junior, placed third in 17:20. In a close battle for third, Arnold junior Eddie Kepran edged Conner Patterson, a Providence Christian senior, 17:27 to 17:29. Kepran had won the boys' 5K in the 2020 Buccaneer Bash.

All five of Leon's scorers placed in the top ten. After Koon and Rogers, Leon sophomore William Springer was sixth in 17:41. Another sophomore, William Winsor, took seventh for Leon in 17:49. Making it four sophomores in Leon's scoring five, Quinn Carrasquila placed tenth in 18:30. The Lions had 26 points, first place among the ten teams in the boys' race, and a sweep of the Buccaneer Bash team titles.

Kaleb Hollins and the Choctawhatchee boys were second with 59 points. Arnold, the 2020 champs, squeaked by North Bay Haven 108 to 110, taking third.

Has anyone won Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K more often than Sheryl Rosen? Let me check.

No.

Sheryl Rosen
Sheryl Rosen

Rosen has also won the Tallahassee, Florida race in more different decades than anyone else. The 2000s? She took first in both 2006 and 2007. The 2010s? The Tallahassee lawyer won the 2018 event. The 2020s? Rosen covered that decade on Saturday morning, 18 September 2021, winning the 39th annual Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K in 21:16. In a showdown of two master runners, Leonardo Canete edged Glen Gorton for the top spot in the men's race, 18:14 to 18:15.

The Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival features a women's 5K followed by a separate men's 5K. The two races are run on the same course through the Indianhead Acres neighborhood, with the women starting in a wave five minutes before the men's wave. In 2021, the womnen's wave set off at 8:00 AM.

Sheryl Rosen and Mia Wiederkehr

Leading the race after just over 600 meters, three runners went around the first turn together--Sheryl Rosen, Mia Wiederkehr, and Annalise Maillet. Later, Maillet fell back. Wiederkehr hung on longer, but Rosen shook her as well, eventually.

"Before the two mile," recalled Wiederkehr.

Maggie Fleming

Rosen spent the rest of the race widening the gap, ultimately winning by nearly 200 meters in 21:16. Wiederkehr took second in 22:02. Maggie Fleming overtook Maillet during the final kilometer of the race to place third in 22:32. Maillet was fourth in 22:44. Laura Reina was the first master runner in the race, coming in seventh overall in 23:50.

In the men's wave, Leonardo Canete led early, with Ryan Truchelut trailing closely. A week earlier, Truchelut had finished ahead of Canete in the Sickle Cell 5K. This time, Truchelut couldn't stay with Canete. Coming up on the four kilometer mark Glen Gorton overtook Truchelut to move into second. Gorton was surprised to find himself moving up on Canete during the final kilometer. But...

"I didn't quite get him," said Gorton.

He didn't. Canete made it across the line first in 18:14, just ahead of the 18:15 posted by runner-up Gorton. Truchelut finished third in 18:52.

62 women and 44 men finished the 2021 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. Another 19 athletes completed a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.

Annabelle Wiktorski and Jonathan Kiros rule at the Everhart Invitational

After skipping 2020, Tallahassee, Florida's oldest middle school cross-country meet was back on the schedule on Wednesday morning, 15 September 2021. Annabelle Wiktorski, a Montford seventh-grader, won the girls' 3K race in 12:07, while the Deerlake girls scored 27 points to take first in the team standings. In the boys' 3K, Deerlake seventh-grader Jonathan Kiros threw down a winning 11:10. The Montford boys took the team title with 35 points.

The grounds of Everhart School aren't expansive enough for a three-kilometer course, and the school is surrounded by suburban development, so a good bit of the racing at the Everhart Invitational is on nearby streets. The course also includes as much of the school property as possible, including the bus ramp. Unfortunately, three vehicles were navigating the bus ramp when the girls came through during the first 500 meters of their race.

"They let a car onto the course and I had to run farther to go around it, then work hard to catch up with her," said Annabelle Wiktorski, indicating her Montford teammate Andi Vilardo. "London ran into a tree."

London Mellen, a Deerlake eighth-grader, recovered from her encounter with a live oak soon enough to lead the field around the school yard. By the time the race had left Everhart for the streets, Wiktorski had moved into second. At 1600 meters the Montford seventh-grader was just off Mellen's shoulder. Overtaking Mellen late in the second kilometer, Wiktorski started to open a gap. Another Deerlake eighth-grader, Abbey Griffin, passed Mellen on the way back to the school, but no one caught Wiktorski. Maintaining her lead, she crossed the finish line in a winning 12:07. Griffin took the runner-up spot in 12:13. Mellen was third in 12:30, and Vilardo fourth in 12:32.

"It was not the most difficult course I've run, but it wasn't easy," said Wiktorski after the race. "I did get a new PR today. I usually run better in the morning."

Deerlake ended up with six runners in the top ten; Griffin and Mellen were the first two. The remaining Deerlake scorers were sixth-grader Chloe Molen (6th, 12:41), seventh-grader Kaia Ables (7th, 12:46), and sixth-grader Honesty Daniel (9th, 13:15). Those five gave the Bucks a mathematically unbeatable 27 points and the first-place team trophy. It was the fourth win in four appearances for the Deerlake girs, who have a five-meet winning streak in Leon County Schools cross-country going back to the 2020 season.

Wiktorski's Montford Mustangs were second with 34 points. Raa, led by eighth-grader Kennedy Bell (11th, 13:42) edged Cobb for third, 98 to 103. Eight schools had teams in the race.

Between the streets and the bus ramps, there is a lot of pavement on the three-kilometer course at the Everhart Invitational, certainly more than you'd typically expect in cross-country running. For some people, that's not a bad thing.

"I actually really loved it," said Jonathan Kiros. "I run well on the roads."

Jonathan Kiros

The seventh-grader certainly ran well at the Everhart Invitational. In the three previous meets of Leon County Schools' middle school cross-country season, the boys' 3K was a duel between Kiros and Swift Creek's Asa Swope, with Kiros winning the ARPXC Invitational and Swope winning at the Fort Braden Run and the Mustang Stampede. But Swope wasn't at the Everhart Invitational.

"I could go out harder knowing that Asa wasn't in the race," said Kiros.

Kiros did go out harder. He was already in front of the field coming off the bus ramp, half a kilometer into the race. Swift Creek eighth-grader Kingsley Knispel, Fairview seventh-grader Jack Koon, and Montford seventh-grader Gavin Poucher were the closest athletes to Kiros as the race left the school, but no one was able to challenge the Deerlake seventh-grader. Kiros just kept widening the gap, ultimately winning by nearly 150 meters in 11:10. Knispel took second in 11:42. Koon stuck with Knispel for most of the race, but eventually fell back and was overtaken by Poucher, who placed third in 11:49. Koon held off a late charge by Montford eighth-grader Matthew Hauser to take fourth in 11:58. Hauser was fifth in 11:59.

Montford's Poucher and Hauser were joined in the top ten by two more Mustangs--seventh-grader Parker Smith was seventh in 12:10 and eighth-grader Edward Bass placed ninth in 12:18. When Montford eighth-grader Jackson Beener finished eleventh in 12:24, the Mustangs had 35 points and first place in the boys' team standings.

Kiros' Deerlake squad took second with 50 points. Close behind at 55 points, Koon and the Fairview Falcons placed third--Fairview's best showing as a team this season at a Leon County Schools meet. Nine schools fielded boys' teams.

Fairview hosts the next Leon County Schools middle school cross-country event--the Falcon Invitational at the North Florida Fairgrounds on Thursday, 23 September 2021. The season continues at the Florida State University Recreation SportPlex on Friday, 1 October 2021, with the Mabry Invitational. Competition concludes on Thursday, 7 October 2021, with the League Championship Meet at Apalachee Regional Park.
