Ryan Kelly and Ruth Holiday win more at "Run More, One Less"

November road-racing in Valdosta, Georgia opened on Saturday morning, 7 November 2020 with the second annual "Run More, One Less" 5K. Master runner Ryan Kelly won the 3.1-mile event by 300 meters with a 19:14, and Ruth Holiday was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 28:25.


Aiden Keen of Valdosta took the runner-up spot in 20:28. A ninth-grader at Highland Christian, Keen runs for his school's cross-country team. Samuel Newhart of Melrose, Florida ran 21:12 for third.


Thirteen-year-old Suanna Morris of Ray City, Georgia came in second in the women's standings with a 28:50, good for twelfth overall. Another Ray City athlete, Lauren Thomas, was the third woman and fourteenth overall in 29:11. Beth Ford of Valdosta was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 30:58.


73 athletes finished Covenant Baptist Church's 2020 "Run More, One Less" 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Laci Watford and Matthew Stratton win at 1A Region 1, but Maclay sweeps team honors

When the athletes of FHSAA 1A Region 1 met at New World Golf in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday morning, 6 November 2020, it was Laci Watford, the University Christian junior, who won the girl's 5K, running 18:40. Another junior, Matthew Stratton of Saint Johns Country Day, won the boys' 5K with a 15:53. But it was the harriers from Maclay who swept the team titles, taking first in the girls' race with 49 points and first in the boys' race with 36 points.


Runner-up in the 2018 and 2019 Region 1 races, Watford's winning 18:40 in the 2020 event put her across the finish line a minute before the next runner. Kaylin Olivarez, a Baker eighth-grader, placed runner-up in 19:40. Maclay frosh Susan Koeppel came in third with a 19:49.


After Susan Koeppel, Maclay had seventh-grader Lillian Koeppel take ninth in 20:43. The remaining three Marauder scorers were Maclay frosh Natalie Hammett (11th, 20:46), eighth-grader Payton Thumm (15th, 21:56), and seventh-grader Nishi Bhanderi (16th, 21:28). Those five athletes combined for Maclay's winning score of 49. In the past seven years, the Maclay girls have won seven Region 1 team titles.


Pensacola Christian was second in the region with 66 points, led by frosh Rae Anne Tutton and seventh-grader Jaimee Tutton. Rae Anne Tutton finished fourth in 20:08, Jaimee Tutton was fifth in 20:08. Community Christian placed third with 92 points; the Tallahassee school's first runner was junior Morgan Wilson, seventh in 20:34. Providence, the last school to win the Region before the Maclay streak began, took fourth in the 2020 meet with 98 points. Providence was led by frosh Lindy White, who placed sixth in 20:25.


The top four schools--Maclay, Pensacola Christian, Community Christian, and Providence--qualified for the State Championship Meet.

Undefeated in the month of October, Matthew Stratton's 15:53 win in the 1A Region 1 boys' 5K gave the Saint Johns Country Day junior a four-race winning streak. The Maclay Marauders took the next two places, with junior Jackson Yarbrough runner-up in 16:08 and senior Leo Rutledge third in 16:37.


In addition to Yarbrough and Rutledge, Maclay had two more harriers in the top ten; sophmores Clayton Knox (5th, 16:58) and Carter Rothell (8th, 17:25). When Lawrence Bishop finished 21st in 18:17 for Maclay, the Marauders had 36 points and their ninth Region 1 boys' title in the last eleven years.


Finishing fourth in 16:43, junior Jonathan Tutton was first runner home for Pensacola Christian. Pensacola Christian had five scorers in the top fourteen, racking up a score of 44 points and taking second in the Region. Saint Johns Country Day was third, scoring 114 points behind Region champ Matthew Stratton. Saint Joseph was fourth with 136 points, led by sophomore Victor Farfan (6th, 17:08).


Maclay, Pensacola Christian, Saint Johns Country Day, and Saint Joseph were the four boys' teams that qualified for State out of 1A Region 1. The 2020 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship Meet will be contested in Tallahassee, Florida at Apalacheee Regional Park. The class 1A races are scheduled for Friday morning, 13 November 2020.

In cross-country, FHSAA 2A Region 1 still belongs to Bolles

In Florida high school cross-country, Regional Meets are the last round of competition before the State Championship. For athletes and teams that don't qualify at the Region, the season is over. Some harriers claim that their Region is especially difficult, or even the toughest in Florida, and call it the "Region of Death." I don't take any sides as to which, if any, Region deserves the "Region of Death" monikker, but 2A Region 1 could fairly be called the "Region of Bolles." Bolles School has won everything in that Region more often than not during the past six years. The 2A Region 1 Championship west of Jacksonville at New World Golf on 6 November 2020 was part of that streak.


The Bolles girls took the first seven places in their race, putting up a perfect fifteen-point winning score. It was the eleventh straight Region 1 win for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Jillian Candelino finished first for the second year in a row, this time going 18:25. The Bolles boys won for the sixth year in a row, scoring 28 points behind the first-place finish of Bulldog senior Cole Rutkowski, who ran 15:58.


First in the girls' 5K, Jillian Candelino was just a few steps ahead of the runner-up, her Bolles teammate Maxine Montoya. Sophomore Candelino and senior Montoya clocked 18:25 and 18:31. The pair had also taken the top two spots nine days earlier in the FHSAA 2A District 4 race, where Montoya had outrun Candelino 19:03 to 19:10. The Bulldogs didn't have to be concerned with relative positions, though, as they turned the Regional into what was effectively an intra-squad race, taking the first seven places. After Candelino and Montoya, the next five runners in Bolles colors were junior Madelyn Popp (3rd, 18:35), sophomore Ella Mickler (4th, 18:43), senior Layne Rivera (5th, 19:20), frosh Leila Bata (6th, 19;53), and junior Hadley Ropp (7th, 20:00).


The first runner that wasn't wearing orange and blue was South Walton sophomore Ava Flaherty, eighth in 20:11. Flaherty's finish led her team to a second-place score of 65. Bishop Kenny was third with 75 points; their top finisher was Kathryn Sanders, ninth in 20:13. Episcopal was fourth with 117 points, led by their ace frosh Hannah Kowkabany (12th, 20:35).


The top four teams--Bolles, South Walton, Bishop Kenny, and Episcopal--qualified for the State Meet. For the other schools in the field, the Region of Bolles was the Region of Death.

Bolles' Cole Rutkowski had placed runner-up to Bulldog teammate William Brady in the 2019 Region 1 boys' race, and he had finished behind teammates Colin Duhnoski and Matthew McClure in their previous race, the 2A District 4 boys' 5K. Brady wasn't at New World Golf for the Region 1 meet, but McClure and Duhnoski were. In the end, it didn't matter who showed up for the Regional, because Rutkowsi beat them all, running 15:58 and crossing the finish line with an 80-meter lead. Fernandina Beach senior Caden Kwiatkowski was second in 16:11. A few steps back, West Florida sophomore Luis Gutierrez edged Bolles junior Matthew McClure for third, 16:14 to 16:16. All five Bolles scorers cracked the top ten, with Rutkowski and McClure joined by junior Colin Duhnoski (8th, 16:45) and seniors Aidin Hasan (9th, 16:46) and William Camp (10th, 16:57). That gave the Bulldogs a winning score of 28 points.


Placing fifth in 16:22, Bishop Kenny senior Michael Teal was his team's first finisher. Bishop Kenny scored 82 points, taking second in the team standings. South Walton was third, scoring 114 points behind their top finisher, senior Cooper Blazer (17th, 17:31). With fourth place at stake, the final qualifying spot for State, Menendez scored 120 points to take fourth and advance, while Fernandina Beach scored 122 points to take fifth and end their season. Senior Ian Kelbert (12th, 17:07) was the first Menendez finisher; Fernandina Beach senior Steven Durr (6th, 16:28) led his team. Durr qualified for State as an individual, as did West Florida sophomore Luis Gutierrez (3rd, 16:14), Pensacola senior James Simkins (7th, 16:40), and Sante Fe junior Matthew Ortiz (14th, 17:16).


The Bolles, Bishop Kenny, South Walton, and Menendez teams advanced to State. The 2020 FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship will be Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida with the 2A races scheduled for Friday morning, 13 November 2020.

Chiles boys and Fleming Island girls triumph in 4A Region 1

Saturday, 7 November 2020, was not a great day for repeat winners at the FHSAA 4A Region 1 Meet.


Having graduated, Ashley Klingenberg wasn't around to defend her Region 1 title, and Niceville senior Lillian Holtery became the 2020 champion, running 19:12. Fleming Island scored 81 points to take the girls' team title, knocking off defending champ Chiles. The Chiles boys won the team title in their race with 47 points, while the defending champs from Bartram Trail were fourth. But Rheinhardt Harrison broke the pattern. The Nease junior successfully defended his 2019 title, cruising to a 15:46 win in the boys' 5K.


If there was a rematch in the girls' race it was between Lillian Holtery and Elizabeth Iliff. Iliff, a Creekside senior, and Holtery had finished just seconds apart in the 2019 Region 1 meet, with Iliff fourth in 18:37 and Holtery fifth in 18:40. The two were part of a lead pack of ten runners at the midpoint of the 2020 race. As the race wore on, the pack shrank. With the finish line approaching, Holtery charged away from Iliff and won the race, 19:12 to 19:15. Jada Williams, a junior on the Flagler Palm Coast team, placed third in 19:19.


In the team standings, Emma Millson led Fleming Island's charge; the Golden Eagle senior was sixth in 19:46. Another Fleming Island senior, Marisa Kortright, was eleventh in 20:05. The remaining Golden Eagle scorers were juniors Mei Chang (13th, 20:10) and Grace Adams (14th, 20:15) and frosh Allie Knotts (44th, 21:45), giving Fleming Island 81 points and the 2020 4A Region 1 girls' title.


Mandarin, led by junior Lauren Conover (15th, 20;19), was a close second with 90 points. Iliff and Creekside took third with 114 points, while Holtery and Niceville were fourth with 121 points. Spruce Creek took fifth, also with 121 points, but losing the tie-breaker to Niceville. It was an especially bitter loss, because only the top four teams qualified for the State Meet. For the rest of the field, the 2020 cross-country season was over.

Rheinhardt Harrison entered the boys' race as not only the defending 4A Region 1 champion, but also the 2019 4A State champion. He looked like it. Harrison led nearly the entire race, winning by more than 100 meters. Nease senior Bradley Ball was second to his teammate in 16:09. A sprint to the finish line decided third, with Forest senior Ashton Deriso (3rd, 16:45) outkicking Buchholz senior Ashok Jaishankar (4th, 16:46) and Chiles junior Ben Kirbo (5th, 16:46).

Kirbo was the first Timberwolf across the finish line, but he was followed by sophomore Wyatt Townsend (7th, 16:54), senior Nathan Reffitt (8th, 16:54), senior Jackson Sytsma (18th, 17:20), and junior Filippo Reina (19th, 17:20). Those five scored 47 points for Chiles, putting their squad first in the team standings. Chiles boys' teams had won a few class 3A state titles over the years, and more than a few class 3A regional titles, but this was their first regional win in class 4A.


Placing second, Creekside came close to keeping Chiles from the Region 1 title, scoring 52 points behind the ninth-place finish of Creekside junior Jesse Benavides (16:57). Rheinhardt Harrison and Nease scored 65 points, taking third. Bartram Trail, the 2019 champions, placed fourth with 73 points, led by senior Jahari White (6th, 16:48). As the top four teams, Chiles, Creekside, Nease, and Bartram Trail qualified for the State Final.


The FHSAA State Cross-Country Final is at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida, with the 4A races scheduled for Saturday morning, 14 November 2020.

Region 1 at Alligator Lake is the last win before State for the Leon girls and Ponte Vedra boys

In Florida high school cross-country, the Regional Meets are the penultimate round of the state championship series, the last race before the State Meet. For Leon High frosh Patrick Koon and Fort Walton Beach senior Kambry Smith, it was also their last win before State. In Lake City's Alligator Park on Saturday morning, 7 November 2020, Koon won the boys' 5K at the 3A Region 1 meet, running 16:19. Smith took first in the girls' race at the meet with an 18:45. The Leon girls were first in the Region with 70 points, while Ponte Vedra claimed the Region 1 boys' title with 54 points.


The girls raced first at Alligator Lake Park. Saint Augustine junior Reilly Barber hung with the leader, Kambry Smith, for the first half of the girls' 5K, but Smith left Barber behind during the second half of the race, winning 18:45 to 18:58. Leon senior Lilli Unger moved up through the field after mid-race to take third in 19:15.


Unger was joined in the top ten by Leon sophomore Lillee Tang, tenth in 20:13. Sophomores Lily Moore (12th, 20:23) and Stella Lewis (19th, 21:16) also scored for Leon, as did Lion senior Avery Calabro (30th, 21:44), each contributing to their team's winning total of 70.


Led by Reilly Barber, Saint Augustine was a close second with 75 points. Ponte Vedra edged New Smyrna Beach for third, 98 to 102--Ponte Vedra led by senior Lauren Bing (4th, 19:45) and New Smyrna Beach by senior Emma Schlageter (8th, 20:01). As the top four teams, Leon, Saint Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and New Smyrna Beach qualified to advance to the State Championship Meet.

The boys' 5K looked a lot like the 3A District 2 race a week earlier. Leon's Jacob Rogers and Patrick Koon spent the first half of the race patiently tucked back in the pack, then moved into the lead during the last two kilometers. At the District, though, Rogers had left Koon behind. At the Region it was Koon's turn to shine, and the Leon frosh charged home to win in 16:19. Sophomore Rogers was second in 16:26. Pace senior Francisco Ramirez, runner-up in Region 1 in 2019, placed third in the 2020 race at 16:36.

Koon and Rogers, though, were Leon's only two runners in the top ten. Ponte Vedra had three--senior Lucas Bouquot (6th, 16:49), sophomore Grant Doherty (7th, 17:02), and senior Joshua Cills (9th, 17:12). Ponte Vedra's remaining scorers were seniors Aidan West (13h, 17:32) and Colin Lytle (27th, 17:55). Those five scored 54 points for the Sharks, good enough for the Region 1 title.


Led by senior Ryan Sloan (5th, 16:49), Fort Walton Beach was second with 68 points. Saint Augustine placed third with 74 points; their top runner was senior Bela Schein (8th, 17:02). Leon was the final team in the field to qualify for State, taking fourth with 114 points.


The FHSAA State Cross-Country Championship is slated for 13-14 November 2020 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. Class 3A is scheduled to race on Saturday morning, the second day of competition. But keep an eye on the Gulf of Mexico, because Tropical Storm Eta just might interfere with those plans.

The 3A Region 1 meet was run at Ridgeview High in Orange Park in 2005. The meet was run at the Miccosukee Greenway in Tallahassee in 2006, 2007, and 2008. The meet was run at Sunnyhill Farms near Tallahassee in 2009, 2010, 2012,  and 2014. The meet was run at Alligator Lake in Lake City in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2020. The meet was run at Sante Fe College in Gainesville in 2016. The meet was run at New World Golf in Jacksonville in 2018. The meet was held at The Oaks Equestrian Park in Lake City in 2017 and 2019.

With Jake Rogers and Lilli Unger, Leon Cross-Country wins everything at 3A District 2

Saturday morning, 31 October 2020 was also Halloween morning, but there were no costumes at the Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course, east of Tallahassee, Florida. Nor was their trick-or-treating. There were uniforms, there was running, and there was the FHSAA 3A District 2 Cross-Country Meet--the first round of the State Championship Series for the high schools of North Florida. Tallahassee's Leon High won the team titles in both the boys' 5K and the girsls' 5K, with Leon sophomore Jacob Rogers taking first in the boys' race with a 16:38, and Leon senior Lilli Unger going 19:29 to take first in the girls' event.

The boys' race started at 9:30 AM, opening the meet. Aaron Morse, a Columbia High senior, charged into the lead, running the first mile in 5:14. That was 16:21 pace, and ambitious opening mile for an athlete who had never broken 18:00. Three other athletes--Leon sophomore Jacob Rogers, Leon frosh Patrick Koon, and Wakulla senior Simon Cole--hit the mile mark in a more judicious 5:22.


Before the end of the second mile, Rogers, Koon, and Cole had overtaken Morse. The four were running together at that point, but over the last mile Rogers dropped each of them one by one. Rogers was racing entirely alone by the homestretch, and the Leon sophomore crossed the finish line first in 16:38. Koon took second in 16:53, while Cole was third in 17:15 and Morse fourth in 17:35.

Leon's next three runners were junior Leo Kelly (7th, 17:51), frosh William Springer (9th, 18:16), and frosh William Winsor (11th, 18:24), giving the Lions 30 points and the District 2 title. Aaron Morse's Columbia team was second with 75 points. Lincoln High, led by Trojan senior Khary Wright (6th, 17:49), was third with 87 points. Those top three teams qualified to advance to the next round of the State Championship Series, the Region 1 Meet at Alligator Lake Park in Lake City, Florida on 7 November 2020.

Gainesville High junior Ani Veltcheva led most of the first half of the girls' 5K, but the second half of the race belonged to three Leon athletes--senior Lilli Unger and sophomores Lillee Tang and Lily Moore. The three left the rest of the field far behind, becoming the only girls in the race to break 20:00. Unger was especially lonely, finishing first with a lead of over a hundred meters in 19:29. Tang was runner-up in 19:55, with Moor taking third a few steps back in 19:57.

Sophomore Stella Lewis took the next place for Leon as well, coming in fourth in 20:43. Leon frosh Juliette Heckman was the final scorer for the Lions, placing 25th in 24:17 and giving her team 35 points--first in the District and earning the Leon girls a spot on the starting line at the Region 1 Meet.


Wakulla frosh Lilliana Lewis finished fifth in 21:12, leading her team to a score of 75, good for second in the district and advancing the team to the Region 1 Meet. The Lincoln girls grabbed the third place, scoring 97 points behind their senior ace, Lauren Whittier (10th, 21:52). Lincoln was the final team to qualify for Region 1 competition.

At the Region 1 Meet in Lake City, the teams will be racing to qualify for the State Final, with the top four teams advancing. The State Final will be held back in Tallahassee at Apalachee Regional Park on 13-14 November 2020, with the 3A girls racing at 7:30 AM ET on 14 November 2020 and the 3A boys racing later in the morning at 8:05 AM ET.
