Hamilton outkicks Reynolds 17:25 to 17:26 at Climax's Swine Time 5K

In late November the cotton harvest has been baled and there’s a turkey carcass in the refrigerator that no one wants to look at any more. That’s when you can look for the annual Swine Time festival in Climax, Georgia. In their village a short drive north of Tallahassee, Florida, the Climax Community Club has hosted a celebration of the hog since 1975, and since at least 1978 the festival has included a road race. Originally a 10K but scaled back to a 5K in later years, on Saturday morning, 26 November 2016, the race was part of the 42nd annual Swine Time.

The 3.1-mile race started from the Swine Time Fairgrounds at 8:30 AM. Dustin Reynolds, a senior on the Seminole County High cross-country team, darted into the lead. Daniel Hamilton was just a few steps back, though. Hamilton, a Chattanooga resident, was someone who just might have something to teach a young distance runner.

“I coach cross-country at Lafayette High,” said Hamilton. “It’s my first coaching job. My first job out of grad school, really.”

At the halfway point of the race the runners turned around to retrace the route back to the fairgrounds. Reynolds was five seconds ahead of Hamilton at that turn, but Hamilton started to eat into that lead during their return trip. By the three-kilometer mark, Hamilton had drawn nearly even with Reynolds. During the final kilometer Hamilton pulled slightly ahead. After taking the final corner on the course, the runners had less than 100 yards to go. Reynolds dashed ahead, but Hamilton answered his surge and regained the lead. The two crossed the line at full speed, with Hamilton first in 17:25 and Reynolds second in 17:26.

“That was all I had,” said Coach Hamilton. “I’m more of an ultra-runner. I just finished the JFK 50-Mile.”

Indeed, Hamilton had placed 21st in that Washington, DC race only seven days earlier, running the 50 miles in six hours and 57 minutes.

Reynolds hadn’t been idle before the Swine Time, either, placing fourth in the Georgia High School State Cross-Country Meet on 4 November 2016. He was racing at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee on 19 November 2016 at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross-Country Regional, where he qualified for the next round of competition.

“I’ve got Nationals in Hoover, Alabama next week,” said Reynolds.

Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the top master in the race, placing third overall in 18:53.

Amber Braswell

Amber Braswell made sure that the women’s competition was less exciting. The Swine Time women’s champ in 2015, Braswell successfully defended her title, placing fourth overall in 20:17 and finishing close to half a mile ahead of the next woman in the race. Darla Castoro of Bainbridge, Georgia was the first woman master and second female finisher in the race, placing eighteenth overall in 25:12. Bainbridge master runner Suzanne Angell was third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 25:48.

Awards for the winners were medals bearing the likeness of recently retired journalist Joe Crine. Crine’s face also appeared on the back of the T-shirt that each entrant of the race received. For more than four decades, Crine had covered Swine Time for the Bainbridge Post-Searchlight. Crine and his notebook were a regular sight at the Swine Time Road Race as well as the Pine Run and every other race and sports event in Decatur County.

5,645 enjoy Turkey Trot; Kaiser and Sherron enjoy it quickly

Nate Kaiser, Daniel BaurWhen a race is held annually for 40 years, like Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Turkey Trot, you start to see some of the same competitors show up year after year. Nate Kaiser, for instance, was running his seventh Turkey Trot on Thursday morning, 26 November 2015. The difference this time out was that Kaiser not only ran the 15K race faster than in all his previous Turkey Trot outings, but he also won the race for the first time. Kaiser had never placed lower than fifth, but this year he took the top spot in the 9.3-mile event, running 52:41.

But the Tallahassee Turkey Trot didn't grow into an event attracting nearly 6,000 participants without also picking up a few new runners. Katie Sherron, for instance, had never raced the Turkey Trot 15K before 2015. On Thanksgiving morning she toured the 9.3-mile course through Southwood in 57:41, finishing as the first woman and placing eighth overall.

Katie Sherron, Katie GormanTurkey Trot neophytes and Turkey Trot veterans, all started at 8:30 AM on Esplanade Way, the 15K runners as well as the entries in the 10K and 5K races. Trevor Sununu led the 15K field at the mile mark, but by the end of the second mile Nate Kaiser had taken over. Jose Diaz overtook the fading Sununu just before the fourth mile, moving into second, but Kaiser's lead proved insurmountable. A minute ahead halfway through the 15K, Kaiser finished the race two minutes ahead of the next runner in a winning 52:41. Diaz was second in 54:42. FSU assistant cross country coach Kevin Chin Shue worked his way up through the field to finish third in 56:07. Placing fourth overall, Jay Wallace edged Tony Guillen for the top master spot in the 15K, 57:23 to 57:25.

Katie Sherron was even more dominant in the women's competition. When Sherron crossed the line in 57:41, the second-place woman still had over a mile left to run. Sherron did have the leaders in the women's 10K to run with until the courses for the two races separated near the five-mile mark. After that, she ran faster than her counterparts in the 10K, ending up with a faster average pace than the women in the shorter race. Brittney Barnes was second in the women's standings in the 15K, placing 23rd overall in 64:39. Jillian Heddaeus was the third female finisher, 30th overall in 66:51. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and sixth woman overall, placing 40th in 70:15.

Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K leadersHalf a mile into the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K, Jake Littlehales, Joseph Garcia, Trevor Touchton, and Dewayne Riley were still trying to run with Ricardo Estremera. Before the mile mark all four had given that up as a bad idea. Estremera went on to win by nearly a minute in 14:53, the fastest Turkey Trot time since Matt Mizereck went 14:46 in 2010. Littlehales outkicked Touchton for second, 15:41 to 15:45, while Garcia was third in 16:01 and Riley fifth in 16:43. Michael Martinez was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing eighth overall in 17:47.

Florida State assistant cross country coach Emma Reed was still going away from the rest of the women's field when she crossed the finish line in 18:33, taking the women's 5K title. Behind Reed, two high school runners were racing for the second women's spot--Johnson City, Tennessee, Science Hill High senior Lydia Lee and Tallahassee Maclay junior Caroline Willis. Lee put some ground on Willis in the final half mile of the race to take the women's runner-up spot in 19:18, placing 21st overall. Third in the women's standings, Willis was 23rd overall in 19:25.
