Ridge Harper and Viviana Schuyler use their trotters at the Swine Time 5K

There was no Swine Time Run in 2017. Sometimes a 10K and sometimes a 5K, the race had been held in Climax, Georgia annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving since the late 1970s. But on Saturday morning, 24 November 2018, the Swine Time Run was back. Bainbridge, Georgia master runner Ridge Harper won the 5K race, running 19:55. Viviana Schuyler, a sophomore on the Bainbridge High cross-country team, took first in the women's division, placing third overall in 20:20.


After skipping 2017, the Swine Time Run wasn't unchanged. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee, Florida timed the race, the first time that the Swine Time had been professionally timed. The course was also USATF-certified, another first in four decades of Swine Time history.


Not far behind Harper, master runner Duane Evans was second overall in 20:01. Landon Watts, a frosh athlete on the Bainbridge High cross-country team, placed third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 20:55.


Madison Sims, a sixth-grader on the Fort Braden Middle School cross-country team, took second on the women's side and and twelfth overall in 25:39. Adrian Parker was third in the women's division and fifteenth overall in 26:48. The top woman master was Juli DeGrummond, the fifth female finisher and seventeenth overall in 27:49.


47 athletes finished the 2018 Swine Time 5K. Look for the race and the Swine Time Festival to return on Saturday morning, 30 November 2019.

Hamilton outkicks Reynolds 17:25 to 17:26 at Climax's Swine Time 5K

In late November the cotton harvest has been baled and there’s a turkey carcass in the refrigerator that no one wants to look at any more. That’s when you can look for the annual Swine Time festival in Climax, Georgia. In their village a short drive north of Tallahassee, Florida, the Climax Community Club has hosted a celebration of the hog since 1975, and since at least 1978 the festival has included a road race. Originally a 10K but scaled back to a 5K in later years, on Saturday morning, 26 November 2016, the race was part of the 42nd annual Swine Time.

The 3.1-mile race started from the Swine Time Fairgrounds at 8:30 AM. Dustin Reynolds, a senior on the Seminole County High cross-country team, darted into the lead. Daniel Hamilton was just a few steps back, though. Hamilton, a Chattanooga resident, was someone who just might have something to teach a young distance runner.


“I coach cross-country at Lafayette High,” said Hamilton. “It’s my first coaching job. My first job out of grad school, really.”


At the halfway point of the race the runners turned around to retrace the route back to the fairgrounds. Reynolds was five seconds ahead of Hamilton at that turn, but Hamilton started to eat into that lead during their return trip. By the three-kilometer mark, Hamilton had drawn nearly even with Reynolds. During the final kilometer Hamilton pulled slightly ahead. After taking the final corner on the course, the runners had less than 100 yards to go. Reynolds dashed ahead, but Hamilton answered his surge and regained the lead. The two crossed the line at full speed, with Hamilton first in 17:25 and Reynolds second in 17:26.


“That was all I had,” said Coach Hamilton. “I’m more of an ultra-runner. I just finished the JFK 50-Mile.”

Indeed, Hamilton had placed 21st in that Washington, DC race only seven days earlier, running the 50 miles in six hours and 57 minutes.


Reynolds hadn’t been idle before the Swine Time, either, placing fourth in the Georgia High School State Cross-Country Meet on 4 November 2016. He was racing at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee on 19 November 2016 at the USATF Junior Olympic Cross-Country Regional, where he qualified for the next round of competition.


“I’ve got Nationals in Hoover, Alabama next week,” said Reynolds.


Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia was the top master in the race, placing third overall in 18:53.

Amber Braswell made sure that the women’s competition was less exciting. The Swine Time women’s champ in 2015, Braswell successfully defended her title, placing fourth overall in 20:17 and finishing close to half a mile ahead of the next woman in the race. Darla Castoro of Bainbridge, Georgia was the first woman master and second female finisher in the race, placing eighteenth overall in 25:12. Bainbridge master runner Suzanne Angell was third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 25:48.


Awards for the winners were medals bearing the likeness of recently retired journalist Joe Crine. Crine’s face also appeared on the back of the T-shirt that each entrant of the race received. For more than four decades, Crine had covered Swine Time for the Bainbridge Post-Searchlight. Crine and his notebook were a regular sight at the Swine Time Road Race as well as the Pine Run and every other race and sports event in Decatur County.

Evan Beauchamp makes it three in a row at the Swine Time 5K

Michael Martinez, Evan BeauchampTallahassee master runner Michael Martinez is accustomed to scouting the field of local road races in the minutes before the event. He reported his findings to me just before the Swine Time 5K on Saturday morning, 28 November 2015, in Climax, Georgia.


"The Bainbridge High folks say that they've got a sub-16:00 guy who never ran cross country until this year," said Martinez. "He was an 800-meter runner."


He amended his report later. "It just got interesting. Myles Gibson is here."


The Bainbridge High runner, Poncherella Leonard, wasn't present at Swine Time, but Donalsonville, Georgia, master runner Myles Gibson certainly was. And so was two-time Swine Time winner Evan Beauchamp of the Atlanta Track Club Elite Team. It was Beauchamp who beat Martinez to the finish line, 17:50 to 17:53, to win his third straight Swine Time 5K title. Columbus State University distance runner Amber Braswell was the women's champ, placing seventh overall in 20:24. 97 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.


Myles Gibson, Michael MartinezThe athletes were called to the starting line for instructions at 8:15, but their out-and-back journey over the course didn't start till 8:30. Evan Beauchamp, the defending champion, took the lead soon after the runners set out from the Swine Time Fairgrounds. Myles Gibson and Michael Martinez shared the second position back and forth till the second mile, when Martinez took it for himself. Meanwhile, Beauchamp had built up a 70-meter lead.


Twelve seconds behind Beauchamp with a mile to go, Martinez started to narrow the gap. Beauchamp was too far ahead, though, and made it home with the win in 17:50. Martinez was second in 17:53. Gibson took third in 18:24, while Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell was fourth in 1933. Bleckley County High senior cross country runner Clay Blanton finished fifth in 19:41.


"It was fun," said Beauchamp. "Sorta."


"I'm coming off a pretty bad injury," said Beauchamp, referring to a torn tendon. "I was in a boot for four months and I've been running again for two months. I'm just happy to be running again."


Amber BraswellThe men's race had been close, but Amber Braswell didn't have to look over her shoulder in the women's competition. The Columbus State Cougar finished well over 400 meters ahead of her nearest competitor, winning the women's title in 20:24. Chelsey Beauchamp was the women's runner-up for the second year in a row, improving on her 2014 time by nearly two minutes to finish eleventh overall in 22:47. Mallie McRae was the third female finisher, fifteenth overall in 23:40. Donica Williams was fourth in the women's standings, 21st overall in 25:18. Anda Lucia Ariail was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, 22nd overall in 25:25.


"This is my second Swine Time Run," said Braswell. "I first ran it a few years back."


Braswell and three-time champion Evan Beauchamp aren't the only ones to return to Swine Time year after year. If you glance back at the results of past Swine Time races, you'll see many of the same names turning up repeatedly. The record, though, has to be held by Bainbridge Post-Searchlight sports editor Joe Crine. Crine may not have run the race even once, but he has been at every Swine Time since the festival was established in 1975. There's something about Climax and its porkers that keeps bringing people back to this corner of Southwest Georgia, at least for one Saturday each November--the Saturday of Swine Time.

Beauchamp and Genovar repeat at Swine Time

Evan BeauchampEvan Beauchamp lives in Smyrna, but he is a son of Bainbridge, Georgia. He's also a marathon runner. As a marathoner, he spent much of November running long distances. On Nov. 7 he ran 2:45:46 in the Savannah Rock and Roll Marathon, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Boston Marathon. On Nov. 27 was in Tallahassee for the Turkey Trot, but he ran a little farther than the prescribed 15K.


"Me and a guy I was running with went about half a mile off course," explained Beauchamp.


The regulation 9.3 miles just wasn't far enough for a marathoner. Even with the detour, Beauchamp finished tenth in 57:17. Two days later Beauchamp was back on the roads, this time in Climax, Georgia, just east of his old home town of Bainbridge. He was there for the annual Climax Swine Time 5K. It may have only been 3.1 miles, but Beauchamp won the race for the second year in a row, running 17:40.


Dre BanksThe race started at 8:30 AM near the Swine Time Fairgrounds in Climax. Justin Nunamaker was the early leader, but Atlanta West Stride's Evan Beauchamp was right with him. After half a mile the runners were out of town, headed north on the Salem Church Road. On that quiet stretch of highway, Beauchamp ran away from Nunamaker. When the athletes turned around at the halfway point, starting the return to the fairgrounds, Beauchamp was already 100 meters ahead of Nunamaker. Beauchamp continued to widen the gap on the way back to the finish line. Meanwhile, University of West Georgia cross-country runner Dre Banks was starting to close on Nunamaker.


When Beauchamp crossed the finish line first in 17:40, Banks was just a few steps behind Nunamaker with a little more than 200 meters left to race. Banks stepped on the gas after the final turn with less than 100 meters to go. His kick was enough to give him second place over Nunamaker, 18:34 to 18:37. Former Swine Time champion Greg Waddell was the fastest master runner in the field, placing sixth in 21:30.


Julie GenovarThe women's competition also had a repeat winner as 2013 champion Julie Genovar of Bainbridge returned to run 23:48, placing 14th overall and taking the women's title. Genovar led the women's field from the start, finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of runner up Chelsey Beauchamp's 24:39. Paige Hildebrand was third in the women's standings with a 25:37. Sandra Canada of Woodville, Florida, was the first woman master in the race and fourth woman overall, running 26:10.


The Swine Time 5K isn’t an enormous race, but it draws more than its share of out-of-town runners. With so much of the world being outside of Climax, Georgia, this shouldn’t be surprising. You can make a similar argument for the hills on the course.



Chelsey Beauchamp“I didn’t think Climax would be so hilly,” remarked a couple of visiting runners.


However, Climax purportedly got it name from being the highest point on the railroad between Savannah and the Chattahoochee River. If you start at a height, the only place to go is down, as Swine Time 5K runners notice on their outbound trek on Salem Church Road. When you turn around to return, it’s time to climb back up to the highest point on the railroad.


In spite of the hills, runners have been coming to Climax for decades, attempting to win bottles of cane syrup. The syrup shows no sign of giving out, and neither does the race.

No hogwash--Beauchamp and Genovar win at Swine Time

The annual Swine Time Run doesn't go back that far, either as the 5K that it is now or the 10K that it was before. But both the festival and the run were going strong on 30 November 2013. That morning Evan Beauchamp of Smyrna, Georgia, was the fastest of 133 finishers of the 2013 Swine Time 5K, edging Bainbridge's Chip Nix 19:54 to 19:59. Al Whately of Cairo, Georgia, was the first master runner in the 3.1-mile race, finishing fourth in 20:47. Bainbridge's Julie Genovar was the first woman across the finish line, placing 14th overall in 23:36. Nancy Palmer of Oviedo, Florida, was the top woman master, running 25:36.


Chip Nix and Evan BeauchampAustin Kelly of Havana, Florida, set the early pace. By the time the runners reached the unpaved section of Handville Road, though, 800 meters into the race, Chip Nix had taken the lead. Nix continued to hold the front spot as the race headed north on Salem Church Road toward the turnaround at the halfway point. When the runners started the trip back, Evan Beauchamp had moved into second. At three kilometers Beauchamp was just three seconds behind Nix. Over the next kilometer, Beauchamp closed that margin. With less than a kilometer to go, just after turning back onto Handville Road, Beauchamp passed Nix. Nix chased Beauchamp all the way back to the fairgrounds, but at the finish line it was Beauchamp over Nix, 19:54 to 19:59. Gareth Pyle of Thomasville, Georgia, was third in 20:41. The first master runner, Al Whately, was fourth in 20:47. Tallahassee journalist Arek Sarkissian took fifth in 21:35.

Former Thomasville High (c/o 2013) cross-country runner Rosalie White led the women at the turn from Handville Road onto Salem Church Road, one kilometer into the race. At that point, Julie Genovar trailed White by seven seconds. Half a kilometer later White's seven second lead was gone and Genovar was in front. Meanwhile, master runner Nancy Palmer had moved up into third. Genovar held the top woman's spot for the rest of the race, winning in 23:36. Palmer closed on White, but White hung on to take second in the women's standings, 24:17 to 24:22.

Martinez and Martin go whole hog at Swine Time

Michael MartinezTallahassee master runner Michael Martinez outraced Bainbridge High School cross-country runner Tae Ross, 17:55 to 18:40, winning the 2011 Swine Time 5K in Climax Georgia on November 26--the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Bainbridge schoolteacher Dana Martin was the first female finisher, placing 23rd overall in 24:30. A few steps back, women's runner-up Jessica Wynn posted a 24:34.


Dana MartinIt takes some courage to schedule a race the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Most runners are going to have run one of the huge "Turkey Trot" or other Thanksgiving races on Thursday. The "Saturday After" race director can't expect much in the way of participation. The Thursday races take most of the athletes, and the Saturday races get the leftovers. Nevertheless, Climax, Georgia bravely (or stubbornly) keeps staging the Swine Time 5K on that post-Thanksgiving Saturday year after year.


Of course, any meal you make of Thanksgiving leftovers includes some of the food you had on Thanksgiving. Similarly, the top four runners in the Swine Time 5K had faced each other on Thanksgiving Day in the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K.


Tae RossAt Swine Time, the runners negotiated a 3.1-mile out and back course that started and finished on New Street at the Swine Time festival grounds. Before the first kilometer was over the runners had left the residential streets for a dirt road past the cotton fields, and Tae Ross was leading with Michael Martinez dogging his heels. Early in the second kilometer the race turned north and back onto pavement on Salem Church Road. Tae Ross was still in front, resisting all of Martinez's attempt to take over pacesetting. Behind them, Greg Waddell had moved into third and Phillip Wilbourn was settled in fourth.

After the halfway turnaround, Martinez was finally able to pass Ross, breaking away on the long uphill return on Salem Church Road. Martinez steadily pulled away, going on to win by about 200 meters in 17:55. Ross was second in 18:40, while Waddell hung on to third in 19:13 and Wilbourn fourth in 20:23.


When Dana Martin passed Teresa Odom during the second mile to take over the lead in the women's competition, Jessica Wynn was three places and twenty seconds behind. During the second half of the race, though, Wynn came on, closing to within four seconds of Martin. But Martin clung to that four second lead, beating out Wynn for the top women's spot 24:30 to 24:34. Odom finished 34th overall in 25:21 as the third woman and first woman master.


There were 113 finishers in the race, an annual fixture of the southwest Georgia running scene. The Swine Time 5K is held in conjunction with Climax's annual Swine Time Festival, a celebration of everything porcine.
