A Midsummer Night's Run 3K, 1998 - 2007

Before long it will be October and every Saturday in Tallahassee will come with a choice of three road races. But right now it’s deep summer and you have to travel out of town to race at all. There just aren’t many events scheduled at this time of year, possibly because of the heat. High school cross-country coaches are probably glad that there’s nothing to distract their runners from doing base training for their fall racing season. For the rest of us, though, up to three years ago we could look forward to A Midsummer Night’s 3K.

The race was directed by Shannon Sullivan from 1998 to 2007 and countered the heat by being short (three kilometers is a bit less than two miles) and in the evening. It was also unique in being held downtown and on a Friday. For the first two years the event started and finished near Kleman Plaza and was known as the Hemingway Days 3K; each runner received a race T-shirt featuring a picture of Papa Hemingway, who did not look like a typical marathoner. After a dispute with the sponsor the race moved uphill to Adams Street and the name became the Shakespearean “A Midsummer Night’s 3K.”

It was never a large event, but there would always be quality up front. In addition to local road racers, the Midsummer 3K fields would include distance runners from local high schools and Florida State. Irish Olympian Breeda Willis ran a couple of times, and her husband Lee Willis held the course record at 8:58. That wouldn’t be a world-beating time on the track, but the Midsummer 3K course wasn’t a track. Runners had to negotiate downtown Tallahassee’s hills while making a series of right-angle turns at street corners. “It wasn’t a race where you could get into a rhythm,” recalled race director Sullivan. “You had to be able to change gears in a hurry.”

Another problem with the course was that it was a loop around which runners did multiple laps, and the fastest competitors would inevitably lap the walkers and joggers, leading to congestion. In later years the race was always held the last day of FSU’s summer session and runners would have to compete with graduates and their families for space downtown. And Sullivan only grudgingly agreed to allow race results to be compiled. He was always more concerned with the post-race celebration. “I want people to remember having a good time,” he said.

Those who did remember having a good time missed the race when it quietly failed to show up on the racing calendar in 2008. After ten years of directing “A Midsummer Night’s 3K” Sullivan had decided to close the curtain on the race. Nothing has since come along to replace it. Sullivan himself is considering an October 3K race near his Sandal Beat store in the All-Saints neighborhood , but I’ve already remarked on the multitude of October races. It won’t be that one deep summer event that made everyone venture out into the heat for a run around the streets.

Gardner conquers Valdosta's Wood Valley hills to win the Bun Run 5K

You can't fault Scott Gardner for consistency. The master runner from Naylor, Georgia ran 18:28 at the Break Bread Bun Run 5K in Valdosta on 24 July 2010, the exact same time that he had run the previous Saturday at Valdosta's Barnes 100 Years 5K. But at the Bun Run 18:28 was good enough for a win, putting Gardner almost a minute ahead of his nearest challenger, the Masked Avenger. The Avenger finished only just ahead of Mark McLeod, 19:26 to 19:28. McLeod recently completed his distance running career at Fitzgerald High School, having graduated this past spring.

Top honors for the women went to Nicole Kump of Valdosta, who ran 24:16 for the win, finishing eighth overall. Nearly 120 meters behind Kump was Jared Komatz of Hahira, Georgia, the women's runner-up, crossing the line tenth overall in 24:51. Homerville's Cathy Helms was the third woman in and the top master woman, 14th overall in 16:10.

The Break Bread Bun Run 5K was hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta. The race started and finished in the parking lot of the Valdosta YMCA and toured the Wood Valley subdivision, described by VSU cross-country coach Todd Smoot as "the hilliest neighborhood in the Valdosta area." By the 8:00am race time, temperatures had already nearly reached 80 °F with a relative humidity of about 90%. I'm not sure what sort of heat index can be computed from that, but I'm sure that the answer is depressing. Kudos to everyone who left behind a soft bed and air conditioning to test themselves on the roads.

Barefoot running? Been there; done that

For the joy of debate, I've been wanting to jump into the shouting match about barefoot and minimal footwear running.

The trouble is that it's not clear what the argument is about. For starters, although I know what "barefoot" means, the definition of "minimal footwear" is not so clear. Additionally, the proponents of barefoot running are a bit slippery as to what are the exact benefits of going unshod. Lower injury rates? Improved performance? Whiter teeth and fresher breath?

But I do have a "minimal footwear" story.

In May 1979 Florida State hosted the Metro Conference Track and Field Championships. I was a freshman at FSU, competing in the 10,000 meters, just short of 25 times around the track. Memphis was also in the Metro and had recruited several British distance runners whose notions of track were closer to roller derby than ours were.

During the eighth lap of the 10,000 I was leading the race, closely followed by Memphis' Steve Anders. Near the end of the second turn, I wandered more than 10 inches from the curb and Anders thought he could pass me on the inside. He couldn't. There was contact. Anders stumbled onto the infield. One of my shoes came off.

I had the bizarre notion that on the next lap or so I could grab the shoe and shove it back on, but it was already gone the next time around. Unevenly covered feet didn't feel right, so after a few laps I paused long enough to tear off the other shoe. The race had become a personal experiment in minimal footwear.

I can't recommend running on a track in socks. Your toes keep curling up, trying to get a grip on the surface. Also, running tracks are designed with a rough surface which gives athletes good traction but is very abrasive.

For two miles the socks protected my feet fairly well. After that the track wore through the soles of the socks and spent the last mile of the race wearing through the soles of my feet. Someone described my feet as "bloody pulp," and another description included the word "shredded." They couldn't have been that bad, though, because I raced the 5,000 meters the next day.

I did win the 10,000 and ran 30:05.1, at the time my best for the distance. Before the minimal footwear advocates claim this as a victory, though, I have to mention it was only my second 10,000 on the track. And the following month I ran 29:37.6, this time wearing shoes the entire way.

So I hesitate to use my experience for either side of the great footwear debate. I did learn that whatever you decide to wear (or not wear) on your feet, don't change in the middle of a race. Results will be less than optimal.

Broadhead breaks record and Horne builds streak at Barnes 5K

In 2009 Barnes Healthcare Services celebrated its centenary by staging a road race in downtown Valdosta, the Barnes 100 Years 5K. This year Barnes marked its 101st year in business by hosting the second annual Barnes 100. The race started at 7:30am on Saturday, 17 July 2010 near Barnes Drug Store in downtown Valdosta.

The Barnes 100 grew more than older in the past year. For one thing, it grew larger, attracting 119 finishers this year as opposed to less than 100 in the inaugural race. And for another thing, it grew faster, at least up front, as Daniel Broadhead crushed the competition and the course record. Broadhead, a rising sophomore on the cross-country team at Wayne County High School, ran 16:45 for the win. He crossed the finish line nearly half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up and defending champion, Valdosta's Masked Avenger, who fought off a challenge from Scott Gardner of Naylor, 18:27 to 18:28. Gardner was the top master runner in the field that morning; his time stands as the new masters' record for the Barnes 100.

Valdosta State cross-country runner Angelina Horne ran 20:31 to finish as the top woman after having finished second in the women's division at the 2009 Barnes 100. It was the second straight win on the Valdosta streets for Horne, who won the Valdosta Independence Day 5K earlier this month. Alice Smoot, less than 90 meters behind Horne, was the second woman in and the first master woman, finishing seventh overall in 20:53.
