In Leesburg, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 2 August 2014, Tyler Sheffel had to run the fastest ever Walter Phelps Memorial 5K to win the 3.1-mile trail race. He did. The recent graduate of Albany's Westover High clocked 18:29, eclipsing the previous best of 18:56 run by Westover's Jack Plowden in 2012. Westover sophomore Janie Plowden won the women's division with a 22:27 finishing 11th overall.Just behind Sheffel was Jack Plowden himself. The Westover senior finished runner-up, bettering his own 2012 performance by running 18:37. Hawkinsville master runner Mitchell Sinyard was third in 19:49; Sinyard was also the top master in the first Phelps 5K in 2011. Coffee High junior Caleb Watson took fourth with a 20:04, and master runner Kerry Underwood of Ty Ty, Georgia, finished fifth in 20:11.
Janie Plowden finished the race 300 meters ahead of the next runner on the women's side. That runner-up spot went to Lee County High freshman Ramsay Miller; Miller placed 18th overall in 23:56. Third in the women's standings went to another Lee County High distance runner, sophomore Ansley Cain, who was 20th overall in 24:25. Lee County junior Rachael Nagy was fourth in the women's division, 22nd overall in 24:50. The string of Lee County Trojan athletes was interrupted by the top woman master in the race, Amy Cain of Leesburg. Cain edged Albany's Maryann Plowden for master honors, 25:06 to 25:09. The two runners were 24th and 25th overall.
94 athletes finished the fourth annual Walter Phelps Phun 5K. The race was established in 2011 as a memorial to Walter Phelps, the victim of a 2010 shooting at his family's business in Leesburg. Proceeds from the race go to benefit the Leesburg YMCA's "Reach For The Stars" Summer Day Camp for children. The fifth Phelps 5K is scheduled for Saturday, 1 August 2015.
